|
|
Seen on Slashdot, the researchers at Microsoft's UI labs have created an API for foot-based movements to assist in controlling a computer, called StepUI. Essentially, among other things they've done here, they have rigged up a DDR pad and assigned certain control combinations to the arrows to manage e-mail and navigate an image gallery. Not necessarily the most innovative or...well...realistic idea, but at least they get to have fun doing it, right? _________________

The first thing that came to mind when reading this was using the opening steps to Max 300 to shut down the computer |

Well, too bad. I don't read SeattlePI.
And oddly enough, I did take a look through Chit-Chat to see if someone else had reported this. I didn't see your post anywhere. >.> _________________

I can't see that being used for tasks of any complexity at all, but for navigating menus and stuff, it sort of almost possibly maybe conceivably borderlines on being usable. It would be interesting to see it incorporated as a secondary input device. Maybe if everyone used wearable keyboards or something... |

Even though it's not too practical at all, it's still more practical than me trying to play Gran Turismo with a foot controller. |

And it will come out...because they are Microsoft, and they own USA. And people will be like "Oh Microsoft made it, must buy cheesy useless Microsoft products!" |

2. Microsoft doesn't really enjoy a lot of brand loyalty in the consumer world, and I have a very, very hard time imagining that this work make any inroads in the corporate community.
There's a fairly short list of Microsoft products that have failed in the business sector. The list is a lot longer when you look at the consumer division. Microsoft Bob, the SmartPhone, the EasyBall, pretty much 90% of the Microsoft Games division (not the Xbox division, mind you), Microsoft's home networking products, the SideWinder product line (some of which were really good), Windows ME, Picture It!...the list goes on.
I think the problem with Microsoft's brand in the home market is that everyone has a deeply-buried association between Microsoft's products and the BSOD. Regardless of whether or not it's the user's fault or a 3rd party app, when Windows crashes or gets a virus, it's Windows' fault. There's not a huge amount of praise for MS in the home market outside of the Xbox. _________________

One application of this thing that few have though of is e-mail and internet in the arcade/airport/starbucks. But Wakka, we already have those things, you say. True, but those keyboards and mice get so beat up and must be replaced constantly. Also who wants to use a public comp during flu season when the person on it before you sneezed all over the mouse A foot controller is much more robust and sanitary than mice and keyboards. As far as looking 'weird' goes, have you watched people use their PDAs and hands-free cell phones - they look like freaks |

They should create a stepfile that is essential in the search and destruction of spyware, adaware, trojan horses and whatever other malicious files lie inside the internet. _________________
