I was just noticing that there's no real way to tell which mods are online, so if someone has an urgent request there's no real way to get quick feedback.
To be fair this is coming from someone who can usually only post at horridly early hours.
My inspiration for this request shall remain nameless, but I was going to PM someone, and didn't know who was best to contact for quick justice.

Sweet.
I did a Google search for those tags and turned up zilch (guess I'm a noob at google too) Thanks.

As long as I'm here (and just out of curiosity), Why are features like this so unpublicized here? I can understand the postcount one, but what about the rest?

You know how on most forums you have the View Online information at the bottom of the forums?

I believe that they took that thing out, as it was wasting bandwidth or generating too many queues.

Yeah, generates too many queues and slows down the forum-viewing process.

Sometimes mods don't want to be bothered and should have the option to be invisible if they want to be.

I don't recall him saying they didn't have the option.

We do have the option. I was responding to EBT's suggestion to force online mods to be visible.

Think back to times when the site was attacked by spammers. Being an invisible mod means you could deal with such things without the attacker(s) knowing where you were.

We haven't had much spam lately. I can recall one graphic case of it though...

mods have a job to do first and formost they lose the right to hide thier online status because when we need them we shoudlnt have to wait till they bumble on to it because they "dont want to be bothered"

its doubly annoying when half the mods on my aim list arent ever on or refuse to mod outside of one or two forums

You may feel that way and that's all fine and dandy. But sometimes, we need a break. Now if something major is going on and a mod is on and they are ignoring it, then that's different. If they are browsing the site and don't want to be bothered at the time with a small request, they should be able to as well. We'd like to take a break every now and then.

But... it's never been a requirement for us to be visible if we didn't want to be. And it's surely isn't a requirement to be on AIM because I'm never on AIM.

Last I remeber, us mods VOLUNTEERED to take these responsibilities. We have every right to not be bothered if nothing serious is going on.

Though, if you want to pay us to be forum monkeys day in and day out, feel free. =D

Personally, I don't see the need for an army of visible mods 24/7 at my disposal. It would be nice, however, to make sure one or two are visible for more “urgent” matters. If there are more invisible ones floating around in addition, that’s just gravy.

And that's what the PM function is for. I don't just sit here clicking Refresh all day so that I'm at people's beck and call, and yet, for the last couple of months, I've pretty much always been two minutes away from coming to the boards. With luck, that'll change today, but the point still stands.

In a similar vein, I'm friends-only on AIM. I usually try to stay on whenever my computer's on, but I just refuse to leave my account wide open so that I get to deal with some new guy IM'ing me every five minutes to ask me stupid questions like "do u like ddr?".

We need a board reporting function. I know. It's something we've talked about before and something I haven't had the opportunity to invest time in researching, especially with the various other things that are incomplete or untouched.

obviously im not suggesting giving out mods aims or emails if they dont want to only that if someone is online and on the forum that they own up to it so that we can contact them becasue if say david is on but i dont know because he keeps hiding his online status then i get to take a crapshoot and PM about a half doze mods that i know are moderatly active instead of getting the one mod that really was on
