|

To use a softpad on a hardwood floor, what do you think of duct taping it to one of those bathtub mats that has all the tiny suction cups, instead of attaching it to a big piece of wood? It seems like that might stop slipping without all that extra weight and unweildiness. I'd still duct tape some clear covering over it, too. What do you think -- good idea or bad? Has anyone tried it? |

No. Trust me, it won't work. I used to have soft pads and I tried everything. My only suggestion is to get a thicker, more durable pad, perferably a CF. |

(I don't mean this to be offensive to you Darth Raider, really, I mean everyone) but it would be nice to see for a change someone giving feedback other than "get a CF" whenever someone has a non-CF related problem. _________________

I know, but the truth is, that if you don't want pad problems, get a CF. My experience with soft pads has been miserable. I've destroyed like 7. Even tried modding them but it doesn't work. |

I have beautifully modded softpads and metal pads that I can AAA and AA on heavy consistantly. As far as modding success, it relies on 3 things:
- construction / design ability
- how much you want something unique
- how much you dont want to throw a few hundred dollars away on a game.
As I've said in 346587634927586 other softpad modding threads, AIM me and I'll show you the AAA softpad mod...because if you do it right and don't use cheap materials for it, you can get AAA's on it if youre good. The cost is around 40 dollars plus the cost of a pad. I use Konami softpads for mine, but it might work with a knock off. |

Hi again, and thanks for the help so far.
I should probably clarify that I'm as much of a beginner as they come -- I played last night for the first time ever (on my brand-new-to-me Playstation 1).
I've read what people have posted about modding softpads, and I'd like to do that so it doesn't break too quickly, but wood sounds too heavy and bulky to take out/put away every time, and cardboard or clear over-carpet mats with little teeth don't seem appropriate for wood floors. Hence my question about the potential for a lighter, less bulky, but still non-slipping solution.
(Mouseish, if yours has advantages like that, I'd be very interested in hearing about it, but I don't have AIM or a chat account.)
Thanks again. |

My mod makes a softpad rock solid. Unfortunatly, it also makes it as heavy as a cobalt flux because of the 3/4" MDF board and 1/4" lexan. I'll do a write up with pictures sometime soon on this mod. I hate the cheesy name (AAA softpad), but hell, thats what it does |

I just got some thick (well 3/4 inch) plywood and used packaging tape to tape down my madcats pads. It didn't work terribly well until I mad a doubles "platform" with 2 softpads mounted on wood linked together. THEN it didn't move I'm playing on a thin carpet however.
CF barely moves at all on my carpet |

mouseish, that would be great if you could post your mod. When you're done is the soft pad still soft or is it basically converted into a hard pad? |

Putting it on wood is the best thing you can do, I think. That is what I did with my first one and it worked well. If you don't want to lose mobility I would suggest getting one of those yoga mats, or a piece of industrial berber type carpet that is slightly larger than your mat. It will still slide, but it will be reduced somewhat. And it won't scratch up your hardwood.
I ready your other posts and assume you did get your ps1 for free and are going for the ultra budget solution, a piece of carpet can be had easily by dumpster diving your favorite carpet store, or look for somewhere where an office is being remodeled or built. You want el cheapo industrial type stuff, nothing too cushy.
Welcome aboard, happy dancing, and enjoy!!! _________________
