DumpsterKeeper, purveyor of the DesktopArcade line of 3rd-party fanmade controllers, has announced immediate availability of arcade-style IIDX controllers, and that's not all. The design of the DesktopArcade IIDX controllers incorporates components from real Konami IIDX controllers, so as a special trade-in program, if you send in your existing Konami-original IIDX controller to DesktopArcade, you can receive your shiny new DA IIDX controller for $180 US shipped, down from the standard price of $225.

If I'm a total n00b at playing IIDX, am I better off getting the KOC (or even the one bundled with BM US) to learn on, or just going straight for this one?

Excuse me, but what information do you have that can back up that statement? I for one have heard ZERO evidence that they actually have sent out a working controller as of yet. Ransai has had ONE video of Random's personal controller that was low quality and hardly showed the product at all, while various people including me, have played on the Deskotp Arcade ASC's, and have been extremely satisfied. The truth of the matter is that DumpsterKeeper actually has a product, while Ransai has a picture of a wooden box on their forums. The fact that Ransai's controller uses a turntable design that might not even work is great too. Also, their controllers are about 80 or so dollars more than DA's, for what we know as an inferior product. I would much rather pay less for a controller that uses parts from engineers that work for a million dollar company then trust some guy from Minnesota.
All I'm saying is, before you bring your fanboy persona in here, at least try to have some information to back it up. If you want to sling garbage then take it somewhere else. |

Umm, just to add in my own view here... why would you ever want KOC parts in your ASC? The buttons are horrific (compared to actual arcade ones) and the turntable is too small. The only reason I can fathom for having this trade in is the cheap availability of turntable components and the PCBs inside the KOCs. The actual turntable and buttons have no place in the ASC.
In all honesty though, if I'm right about these components being used only, its not such a bad idea. $45 on the trade-in is pretty good to be honest IMO considering you don't need it once you have the ASC and at least it should work more reliably than a McGuyvered PCB and other parts. I guess we'll have to see what people think who go ahead with it. |

Yes, the DASC will not feature the buttons and the turntable from the KOC, but will be using the circuit wiring that the KOC used. The turntables used in the DASC will be just like the arcade, except for a 1/16th inch difference so you do not cut your finger while playing some of the harder stuff =P The buttons used are up to the buyer, so check out the website or browse arond the forums if you have any other questions =D |

I guess I need to add the whole disclaimer here too:
No Ransai vs. DA flamewars please. Both are good companies and both are aiming to give the best possible Bemani experience to fans. You can prefer one to the other and that's perfectly fine, but don't just blindly slag one manufacturer or the other.

Steve said that the point of the Trade Up is for people who are ready to get rid of their KOC's. I said in the old DA thread that you should *NOT* go buy a KOC just for this purpose.

I agree. I think the KOC is easier to use in terms of physical effort required. Overall though the difference is infinitely less drastic than the difference between a PopN Music KOC/ASC or a DDR soft/metal pad. In other words, I score higher on the smaller and cheaper controllers because my limbs don't have to flail as far.  But again, Beatmania has the least difference out of every other game.
The best reason to get a DA controller is because Sanwas are sexy. They click nice, they last forever, they're the easiest microswtich-based buttons to press down on, and they look offical because they are the official button of the arcade machine. I think they cost $12 or $20 a button, though. That's really what makes the controller for me. If I could afford it I'd order a controller with the KOC dimensions (blasphemy!) but with Sanwas. That would be the ultimate Beatmania controller for me. And I'd want the turntable to be level with the keys.
That $45 trade in is nice though.  He's not making a profit from the trade that's for sure. In just two months KOCs might be worth $45 new, anyways. |

Where can I see new pictures other than whats on their forum? I didnt really like what I saw on there, and I want to see one of these "customized" decks. Also, will this ASC be demo'd at any upcoming cons, so that I can try before I potentially buy? And is there like a full list of all the options available somewhere?

I've got a lot of new decks which I haven't taken pictures of yet, I'll be posting a lot of new color combinations up in the coming weeks, especially as I start sending out the first orders.
Also, if you are going to Katsucon I will be there with the final version of my doubles deck, and probably another setup with a singles DASC and my Konami ASC so people can compare for themselves.
I'm out of NJ for the weekend so my only form of internet communication is my Sidekick until I get back home tomorrow. I'll have some more contributions to this thread when I get back in front of a computer. Thank you everyone for your interest and support thus far, I have all the confidence in the world that no one will doubt their decision to reincarnate their KOC in a DASC. (Thank you for that analogy, K//eternal).

Those of you looking for an actual answer to the useful part of the above post, skip to the last paragraph.
Your attempt at being funny fails. You should ask a certain DDR tournament coordinator why he bullied a sponsor into sponsoring an event with an unfinished product by saying "if you don't sponsor with a IIDX controller I'll pull your sponsorship". And then you should ask me why I was dumb enough to let him bully me into sponsoring tournament with an unfinished product.
Now, to answer the actual question: I have about 50 painted controllers stocked up, waiting for all the other parts which make the controller tick. Pending payments I will get the controllers into a finished state (unwired) within a week or two. After each order is complete, I will request the customer ships me their KOC and within one week it will be wired and the DASC will be shipped to the customer.
