DDR in Schools

So here's the deal: A lot of public schools got a grant last year to add various activities to the lunchroom in order to keep kids more active. A growing number of schools have decided to buy PS2's, some low-qual offbrand metal pads, and a DDR mix with this money. So now kids can play DDR after they eat lunch, before they eat lunch, or instead of eating lunch. This shows how widely accepted DDR is becoming as an excercise medium. (It's only a matter of time before DDR tourneys get aired on ESPN...)
Now, there is a downside to this. The pads they get are complete junk (I have no idea where they get them, the brachets all only have one bolt in them and it gets stripped after 5 seconds of use). Also, since it is high school, you always get @5$holes getting up there who have never played it before, picking LoM on heavy on 8x speed and Stealth and Dark and Random turn and reverse and no freezes and go act like idiots to make fun of people who actually know how to play. This is why the pads break every five weeks consistantly. Also, you get fat chicks bar hugging on standard (I saw this one bar hugging and the bar snapped in the middle of a six-arrow stream. She almost suffocated and it was funny, in a mean way.) In an attempt to save money, the schools buy the juckiest mats there are to save the $100 they could spend to get a mat that would last more than a week. Even though all this happens, it's still DDR in school. If you want to get DDR in your schools, write your superintendant requesting a grant for a noon activity program, then write your principal telling them about DDR and the options they have. It worked in Michigan, it could work elsewhere.

yeah but i dought that my school would even consider getting DDR people would break it in a matter of a week.but my friens school(PRIVATE SCHOOL)has it but even stinks at it my neighbor is on standard and she is on;y around 9 or somethin'.but anyway yeah right my school is going to get ddr.

Would be really sweet to get ddr in my school. Better than playng lacrosse or something in gym. But on the other hand "cool" kid would say "this is girly gay dancing game I'm not doing it."

Well, most of the time, they forget about that when you do streams at 200+ bpm xD.
Funny thing, if I was still in school, I acutally got so many people to like FFR and SM that it would be widely appreciated if we had DDR...
Ironicly annoying part, I left school so I could be home schooled...damn my intelligence...lol.

Yeah, I have it at school too, and it always breaks down, just as TheBigP says. For the first day or so, people would watch and make sure the people played it right, now though, it has gotten out of hand.

I've placed systems in two schools and given PS2s to over 90 kids for research.

I'm not sure metal pads are the way to go unless you fork over mad cash for TX4000 or CobaltFlux.

I have personally purchased nearly 250 pads with dense foam inserts using two suppliers (FL and CA). My personal pad is the same one I give our kids and it's lasted for 9 months. Average cost including shipping was $16. The CA company sent less than 3% DOA and the supplier from FL has been PERFECT.

I go to the same school as TheBigP but he is one grade up, and my grade doesnt have fat chicks that play, we have this one really fat gothic kid named "bubbles" and he broke one of the bars on the pads. The "cool" kids in my grade practiclly worship me for being so good. However, when they get up, they pick heavy and pick LoM (they dont know how to put mods on) and they just press buttons and they never get in trouble for it and when i go up i crush everyone and their pitifull attempts to upstage me. When i get up, all i hear is "Go DAN!" and im not popular at all or "cool" My friends all eat in a different cafateria so they arent my friends. But yes, the pads do suck, and they break easily and i am the only kid in my grade (at my school) that can pass most nines and any tens.

I introduced DDR to my school as part of gym. We raised money for 2 ignition pads and a computer w/ Stepmania and speakers.

i am out of skool now, but i wish they had one when i was going there.

if they could get a "real" DDR/ITG/PIU at one of the skools in Visalia Ca. i would so be at the skool all the time killing those 9 and 10 footers....

Only time we ever do this is at "gamers club" (video gaming after school, a student run club) meetings. We use PS2s, and whoever brings in their pads. They are debating on having tournaments during lunch to raise money for the school, but as you said, people are worried about damaging their pads.
I have heard of schools offering it as alternate to Phys. Ed.,tho.

That's one way to ensure DDR will not stay alive.

The mind of a high-schooler:
[anything you see in a school building] -> school -> class -> work -> compulsory -> boring

Therefore:
If you put DDR in schools,
DDR -> ... -> boring

(I know it's illogical, but people's minds always are.)

I know that my school Used it for P.E... but thats about it.. Not alot of People know that DDR even helps. They just think of it as a game.

We need to make a stand as DDR Freaks. To show schools the light. As well as are friends/familys.

Homework doesn't fit, as that's not something salable, nor is it generally considered recreation. I don't see where you're going with dodgeball either, since if you're trying to say school ruined it, that's not true; the concept of "skilled people are winners and unskilled people are failures" associated with dodgeball is why people are trying to get it removed from schools.
