Keep all movement natural. Unnatural movement tires the body and throws it off balance. The body is always moving in constant gyration (just like the planets in orbit). Unnatural movement is heavily recurrent in freestyling. You have to learn how to use you routines without contradict the natural movement of the body. I call this the Traveling without Moving Theory (Inspired by the world famous song by Jamiroquai and DJ-DZire).
REMEBER YOUR BODY MOVEMENT IS LIKE THE ENVIROMENT. ITS HOMEOSTASIS IS EASILY UPSET BY INTRODUCING FOREIGN MOVEMENT THAT IS UNATURAL. YOU MUST TEACH IT TO MOVE WITHOUT UPSETTING IT. TREAT IT AS ITS OWN ENTITY AND IT WILL HELP YOU IN THE LONG RUN. |

Very much true. I would however like to add to that one thing; do not let that restrict you from trying new things. Some things will be very much awkward for you on the first couple of go-rounds. The development of dancing skill makes much of the awkward, well, not awkward. Keep at it, but realize that when you're doing a routine, as said by Maverick, know what comes natural for you and what does not. We are not all born with all our skills. This is why we practice. However, don't use a tournament routine freestyle as a place to try out new things that you've never done/practiced before. That's what improv is for.
All that boils down to; keep it natural in performance, but don't be afraid to try new things in practice. Keep dancing; you'll find that less and less is awkward for you. There will be certain things that probably remain awkward, though; you'll recognize them as they come along.
EDIT: Also, Canada, I just watched your LTR FS. Not bad at all, man. It looks like you had a hell of a fun time with that. _________________

Heh...thanks, man, I appreciate that. Definitely a fun night indeed. =)
Good points about improv/routine practice. If you don't get the general movements down on a day to day basis, it'll be difficult to pick and choose things at random that you've never tried before. Match your eight counts to your style, then built up from that foundation. Watch videos, but don't bite entire eight counts - study how their bodies are moving, to what rhythms, what body parts are typically coordinated with other parts, how to move sharply, what gets isolated, what makes for good posture, etc. Try to adapt the basics into your own personal style, if that makes any sense.
Practicing dance off the pad will really makes a difference; greats like A-Jay, BJ, Hypnotikz had all had some kind of dance interest or training prior to DDR. Public improv is a good way to keep in shape and see how your form translates to the pad, but in general, learning dance through DDR alone is a slow process. It took me like two years of on and off DDR freestyle to get to that LTR routine, and looking back at it, it sorely lacks in form and structure. Knowing what I've learned since, I'd kill to do that all over again.
Above all, though, keep freestyle FUN. Don't think of practice as a chore - once dancing ceases to be enjoyable, it's not much of a hobby anymore. _________________

I'm not the best freestyler in the world, but I recommend you make up your own routines instead of learning them from someone else. |

I'll be sure to post a video or two if I feel up to it. There's also a million other free hosting places out there, but Google always promises the best. The next videos I take, whether DDR or not, I'm totally gonna check it out! |

"...we're talking about practice. I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game last it's my last but we're talking about practice man. How silly is that?"

Just keep practicing and try new things.
Watch other FS videos and learn from their flow and routines, but don't necessarily copy them.
Stay calm and have fun on stage most importantly too. _________________

I'm sorry if this is a little off topic, but I gotta say this.
Dude, I "accidently" freestyled on Paranoia Survivor, it was the coolest thing ever.
After the second slow down I tripped a little, enough to through my balance a little, but not enough for my to break combo. My head hit the screen and I was still dancing (I've almost memorized the song so I wasn't too concerned.) HOWEVER, Right when my head hit the screen, some guy said "stop showing off". I then realized this probably looked cool. This crowd response motivated me to push myself off the screen and begin to lift my knees as high as physically possible while still making the steps and swaying my center of gravity slightly left to right at around 135 BPM, or half speed of PS (At this point I'm at the jumpy 16 or so measures before the All-Hell-Breaks_loose crossovers.) The note right before the crossover runs, I did a 360 twirl on one foot and landed on the left arrow.....STILL KEEPING MY COMBO.
Yeah, that was spiffy, unfortunately I missed the very first arrow because I was talking to someone and didn't AA it =(
Anyways, I thought this was really cool, I got applause when I was done. _________________

yeah .oh if you ever want to you could add pop and lock in some songs. For an example healing vision have tickingsound(in the beggining) and heart beat sounds. So it's good if you do a little chest beats, saccin, ticking, dimestopping. You'll own the crowd. |

i loved that routine. i'm surprised it didn't place (then again, there were a lot of good routines that tournament).
i was thinking of roboting the beginning of A and doing some dinkot/kevinkim style stuff during the second half. i come up with a lot of freestyle concepts, but i never actually choreograph them |

This is my problem as well, I have tons of ideas but I don't spend enough time developing them. I'm trying to set it out so I can work on a routine over maybe a period of say... a month or two and work on so many counts at a time as a can, and review at least a 15 minutes every day possible. _________________
