Where was this said? If you are referring to the post on DDRei - I had no idea which distributors were good/bad and nor do I have any call whatsoever on the distributor we would use (if it is one of those). _________________

The pads wil have Optical Sensors so they wont wear out =D that will be cool,
so we dont have to worry about no resonding panels |

I have a question. Assuming when DT is released and the pads are a success, Is the Team willing to release a home pad that is arcade exact? |

Ok to be truthfull with you all, i really dont think that this game will get far for these reasons:
1 ) The arcade version with be very expensive because of the surround sound and all the stuff they want to do.
2 ) The cencers dont detect when you step on the pad, they detect when your foot is NEAR the arrow ( WTF? )
3 ) So in order to make money off the machine, if it costs alot, they would have to have it working all the time. And everything running right...
4 ) In a arcade owners point of view, they are going to look at DDR and ITG, and then look at this, and say " Well ive already got a ITG/DDR and this is the same, why buy two of the same machiens?"
So i think is a good idea, but they need to work some stuff out first |

well a privet person could built a cabenate wih a VERY nice (cambridge soundwerks) surround system for well under a grand for everything but the moniter depending on the route they go with it and the pad while bieng very nice and technical actulay ISNT that expencive to make if the ideas i bounced around in my head are close to the actual design so depennding on shipping and construciton costs and what kind of bulk rate discount they get tey could easily ship a game out for a reasonible amount _________________

Yes. But the price will be steep . I cannot give a quote, but I would imagine it would approach but not exceed $700 /each
Surround sound: Inexpensive when you look at what full sound systems actually cost. A 200 Watt surround amplifier only costs $72 from our suppliers.
The pad detects when you foot is within 1/16th of an inch of the pad. You play DIFFERENT from DDR. If you don't like it, don't play it. It allows players to play a little more like dancing than stomping. It forces you to lift your feet and it's easier on your knees.
The two reasons we want to use the optical pads is because:
They work way longer without maintennence (big + for arcade owners)
and
They allow users to play without exerting an incredible force on the pad. |

I never exert incredible force on the pads at my local arcade, and that's on an ITG2 dedicab. They are sensitive enough to tap, and they will register. Honestly will the pads even be okay for even 16th note runs?
And I don't see how being forced to lift your feet more is better on your knees. Sounds to me like it's just gonna be a huge pain in the buttocks, especially on harder songs.
It seems to me that aside from longevitiy, optical pads don't really present any other advantages over an itg2 dedicab, which is already really, really sensitive. |

It's not like it's all theory. There are a number of models of optical pads I have produced, and for quite some time (starting with the laser pad). The pads are more than acceptable for sixteenth note runs, and you aren't even thinking abut what I mean when I say lift up... we're talking one sixteenth of an inch. Everyone I watch at the arcades does that anyway when playing on traditional pads.
I am sure there will be players who prefer the feel of more traditional pads, however _most_ of the people who have played on the test prototypes prefer their feel over an arcade pad after the first few songs.
Afterall, there are that handfull people out there who prefer DDR to ITG. |

We are having the best DDR/ITG players in the US (arguably, the world) testing these pads out... we will make adjustments with their critiques.
And DDRtist:

wow, you seem to know more about my game than I do... amazing.
1) It's called China, we are getting a great price for QUALITY sound
2) 1/16th of an inch, go grab a ruler and measure that...
3) And your point is....? You think we don't know machines need to make money... you must really think we are idiots, that we have been wandering online for a whole year and then tossed together this website. Also understand that a CORPORATION is in charge of the business aspect of the project with a very strong business model regarding this game.
4) It's called "substition" in a "competitive market". Go grab your economics book and look it up...
And this game is no longer an "idea", its going to be a "product"... and we have been working stuff out.. HELLO, do we want to release a faulty game. Boy, you must REALLY think we are idiots, like we had 10 grand in our pockets and just tossed them around with no purpose. Now what should we do with the next 10 grand... hmm....
Why don't you give us the benefit of the doubt and pretend we have brains... i mean, pretty good brains... we do have a computer science engineer and other engineer majors on the project who go to school for this stuff, let's just pretend that they are actually learning in college... let's pretend i'm on honors pre-med/nursing student, and that I kinda have the mental capabilities of putting two-and-two together... ok? please? can you do that for me? Thanks. _________________

Few questions about the pad...
1. How recessed will they be?
2. What's the surface we'll be stepping on? Since it's no longer a semi-cushioned moving arrow, will it be like tapping on concrete? Will it cushion our feet?
3. What happens when you have jackhammer steps? Like, since you're breaking optical beams, Does the 16th of an inch thing mean that's how far the beam comes from the surface of the panels, and you'll only have to lift your feet 2/16ths of an inch to not double tap and get misses?
4. What's the deal with this no-stomping required thing? Will it actually harm our play to flatfoot loudly? _________________

I go to UMBC, and I've used CNLohr's optical mat plenty of times. At his request, I'll give my 2 cents.
Keep in mind this is just one of his prototypes, and not the actual arcade pad that they will be using. I have no real insight on those, because I'm not involved in the project.
1) They're recessed... plenty? I'm not sure of the precise depth, but it felt fine to me.
2) I was stepping on solid wood, and it was actually pretty comfortable. Kakarotto mentioned something about using hard rubber above, if you're concerned.
3) I argued with CNLohr plenty of times about "jackhammer" steps, 32nd notes, etc. and how accurate optical sensors would be with registering them accurately. He insists and is very confident that they will be adequate, and I trust his ingenuity.
4) Stomp as hard as you want. |
