I haven't seen this on the Chit-Chat section, and I have interesting stories to tell. And yes, this is asking questions to members who are young and/or live with their parents.
My parents HATE DDR. They can't stand it. I think the main reason they hate it is because I obsess over it often. I print out new stepcharts, find DDR CDs, or go to places like DDRFreak.com to hang out and talk about DDR.
Now mind you, I have been restricted a lot in my childhood. My parents don't believe in game systems; if I have the computer, then that's enough. And downloading Stepmania and getting a soft pad hooked up to the computer is out of the question. My parents have these parental controls on my screename that tell them about every place I go, including what I download. So if they even SEE the word "DOWNLOAD" I get grounded for a month... and I am NOT kidding when I say that...
All I want to know is how other people's parents react and what they think of DDR. I think my parent's reactions are a bit extreme, but I'm not old enough yet to move out on my own. I'm interested in hearing some of your responses. ^^ _________________

My dad was the one who bought me DDR in the first place. I would hate to have your parents. _________________

My mom is just glad I am getting some exercise. My mom wanted me to teach her how to play so I started her on Have You Never Been Mellow on beginner. It was funny, she didn't understand when she had to step. Everyone should try to teach their parents how to play, except Kyah Ryorin. _________________

And make sure you find a way to use stupid sporadic capitalization when you talk to them, too. I doubt it's that hard to circumvent the computer logs as well...
My parents don't see anything wrong with it. (Or rather, they didn't even before I went to college.) If your parents don't like video games, become a software programmer. Then, you can work with games while doing something worthwhile (which sounds like the probable reason they don't 'believe' in gaming systems). _________________

Hey i used to have one of those! You wont have much fun like that.
I had a deep hatred for those parental control programs. Until i found out the password (not that i need it anymore)
My parents dont mind DDR. They wont try it but they let me do my thing. |

if i were you, by now i would have found a way around that
but besides that, my parents actaully love the fact that i play ddr, because before i did, i really didn't have a hobby (or an obcession rather) so they were glad when i got into it. Now-a-days, my parents will go as far as driving me to Reno or Vegas just to play some ddr... good times... good times... _________________

Believe it or not, I have tried to teach my mom how to play DDR, and I started her on Ordinary World on Light. She failed it, and I ended up laughing so hard. I mean, it's a 1-footer, so... you'd think she'd be able to do it, since she HAS played Konamix (this was with my cousins in CA) before and knew when and where to put her foot...
Maybe she hates it because she failed it or can't understand it...? I'm never sure... Go figure... _________________

My parents think it's great that I can get so much exercise while having so much fun. They don't care as long as I don't make too much noise... I mean, I've had friends over for the night and played from 2 AM til 6 AM and they didn't care. And mind you, they knew we were playing cause my house is kinda shakey, though not like it's going to fall down...It just transmits vibrations way too well.
But yeah, just talk with your parents about how it's just a game with arrows and your feet and there's no reason to restrict you from it. If anything, they should be encouraging it like seemingly every other parent on this forum does...xD
There's quite a few posts about the educational value (P.E. wise) of DDR, so if you check those out, I bet you could make a pretty convincing arguement with your parents about it.
EDIT: I just found this website (psisar posted it in the "Losing weight?" post) which seems to have a lot of information about the educatoinal and fitness side of DDR and ITG. http://www.getupmove.com/index.asp Check it out. _________________

Parents like yours suck, dude.
Way too many parents these days try to keep their children "safe" and end up making it impossible for them to have fun. Home shouldn't be a prison, and parents don't seem to understand that all the time. _________________

Here's the deal.
DDR is very similar to a drug. You pay money to obsess over it, and it's addicting. Then you start focusing on DDR over other things, and that's what they don't like. It's still a video game to them, even if it's not to you (and we understand that). And plus, they don't understand what you are doing when you play anyway. Maybe you should try and explain the game to them, or have them play to understand how fun it is. Also include the fact that this is called exergaming, not sit-and-get-fat gaming. _________________

My mom plays DDR with me sometimes. She plays songs on standard, and can actually do songs like MaxX and Max 300 (all standard). She was the one who bought the game for excersise, and i picked it up from there. _________________
