It probably has everything to do with how you play and absolutely nothing to do with your weight or size. my friend is 180lbs and plays flat footed, like me (except I'm only 150, but that's beside the point). We play flat footed with shoes on in the arcade. once he decided to try hardcore of the north barefoot. he played it on the balls of his feet, and at about 600combo in the song he put his foot straight through the arrow.
I believe this is because of the force of his footsteps was focused to one point on a panel, instead of spread out over the entire arrow (much like how you can push your finger into the sand, but you can't push your whole fist into it). THIS CAUSED THE ARCADE PANEL TO SHATTER. If you've ever seen what an arcade panel looks like, it's a quarter-inch thick piece of polycarbonate material that is extremely tough. He wasn't even stepping all that hard when it happened, and the panel literally shattered. If you play on the balls of your feet, you will destroy arrow panels, even in the arcade if you are heavy enough and strong enough. |
Quoted for emphasis because I have done the same thing.
I did it playing DDR Extreme at the arcade. And it wasn't anything too crazy hard either. I was playing Last Message on Heavy and instead of playing flat-footed (like I normally do), I decided to play on the balls of my feet because it helps my PA a lot more (but kills my stamina), and I was wanting to AAA the song.
I got about 3/4ths of the way through the song when the right arrow made a sickening crunch. Right after this happened, the right arrow started sagging down in the middle. I immediately jumped off the pad (failing the song) and looked down at the pad. The right arrow had a huge crack all the way down the middle of it. I pushed down on it with my hand and the arrow sagged inward. Of course, that indicating I had not just cracked it, but broken it cleanly in two.
I told the arcade manager and she took it out of the pad. Sure enough, the lucite/polycarbonate had snapped in half. The only thing holding it together was the arrow decal. Now, I am NOT a heavy stepper. I don't stomp on the pads really loudly. I was, in fact, stepping quite lightly at the time, but the arrow still snapped.
So, I definitely think Sync is correct in his assumption that its the way you play on the pads. I've played much harder songs on that DDR machine flat-footed and the arrows never broke. _________________

I got my afterburner and I've played on it a bit (It's at a friend's house, I live on the second floor here) and I am quite thrilled. I'll get more time in this weekend as I am house-sitting.
The pad is gorgeous, and that is all I can say about that. Playing on it is a dream. The brackets aren't exactly like the arcade, but I cannot hit two panels with one foot so I won't feel tempted to "cheat" on hands. I have never encountered an arcade machine that is this sensitive.
The arrow panels are bowed up a tad, and so they do flex down a bit when you step. I can imagine them getting stress cracks after a while. We'll see what happens. I think the sheet metal mod would make them feel more solid, but I don't see a reason to make any changes at the moment.
I didn't have any disconnect problems, but I'll probably play some stepmania to see if I get any with the USB connector. I can easily add better grounding or even make a new control box if I need to, so I am not worried about those kinds of problems. |

I have a question about the arrow tiles for the Afterburner.
I currently own a TX-1000 metal pad and (I think) the tiles are made of the same material (polycarbonate). My concern is that I cracked my first tile on my TX-1000 about 2 weeks after receiving it. To date, I have over 18 large cracks in my TX-1000 and pretty much every tile is broken into 3 pieces.
Although my TX-1000 Still works 100% of the time, I wouldn't want the Afterburner to crack at all. I just want to know if the tiles on the Afterburner have cracked/broken for anyone. If so how significant is the damage? It seems like people are debating this tile thing, but I mainly want a comparison between the TX-1000 and Afterburner (i.e. Are they about the same for durability).
I may buy 2 Afterburners soon and sell my TX-1000 so I just want to know an honest long term quality of these pads. If they do crack I may buy the TX-6000's because aparently the tiles are impossible to break.
Edit: I've heard rumors that the USB port for the control box is not working for some people. I only play using Stepmania (I don't own a PS2 or XBOX) so I want to make sure that the USB connectors are 100% reliable. Anybody know the answer to this? |

I don't know anything about the TX-1000, but I do know the arrows on Afterburner are guaranteed for 6 months (every set you receive, not just 6 months from the day you buy the pad). If they break, just tell them you need a new set and they'll send them out to you. |

Which, I would imagine, gets repetive and annoying after a while. _________________

So, is this a good pad, or should I buy something else? |

You guys need to read the thread a bit...
Some people seemed to have had good luck with theirs, but there are a lot of complaints in this thread about cracked arrows, dead arrows, and the whole pad cracking, among other things. _________________

Let's straighten this out right now....the pad is great if you weigh as much as I do (118lbs) if not I would reccommend building one. CF 5ux0rz |

I do own an Afterburner and my control box is broken. However, I cannot get an exchange -- I am past the warranty date. I cannot buy a new one -- they have been out of stock since I checked in August. I found replacement control boxes that I tried to buy from them... no avail.
I give up.
I'm going to cobalt flux. |

why do not you try at www.mymybox.com
my friend also has the redoctane metal pad and his control box was broken. he ordered from mymybox and now it is working fine!
if you are only using the PS2, the control box from mymybox should be ok. why waste money! it worth to try! |

It's just converting serial to playstation 2 right? not too complex. Should I just get the standard "Metal pad control box" or the "blueshark" ? I'd guess standard, but I'd like to ask first.
I loves you. 8) |

yes. If I were you , I would ask them first! a few metal pad control box come with 15 pin , other metal pad use 9 pin.
so ASK the Seller first after you check, how many pin does your control box has?

I do suppose that would be common sense, wouldn't it? Was a bit lazy last night, but thanks for all your help. |

um, hold on here.
I have absolutley no knowledge in metal pads and how they work, but from what I've seen on the afterburner, there's an X button, and a control box that has the start and select buttons on it.
What is the significince of a control box? Does it really matter if its broken or doesnt work? _________________

The control box connects the pad to the consol you're playing on. Without a connect, in this case the control box, there is connection. _________________

Yeah. The afterburner uses a 9-pin serial connection. The cable connects to the control box, which then connects to your PS2/X-Box/Computer depending on what hardware you have.
As gerinis said, without it there's no connection. It's like an interface between two very different types of connectors. |

Question:
One of the nuts under the screws that hold the connector in to the pad has fallen INSIDE of the pad.
ASCII example:
________________________. . .
where the nut inside fell--> O . . . . O
The other side holds it in fine but every now and then, the connector just kind of....well, falls out. It's annoying. I've tried going into the pad by the A/O button, and the up arrow to try to find it, and i cant get through to it. Even if I got it, I dunno how I'll be able to keep it in.
Is there anyway to keep the connector into the pad, by other means? I've given up trying to fix that nut. _________________

uh, do you mean to say that you screwed the cord into the pad with a screw that was on the control box? if so there is a reason that they made "Breakaway" Cables....too lazy to build it to hold the screws properly. |

Question to anyone that has sent back their Afterburner to RO for repairs:
How long does it usually take for your pad to be sent back to you? I just shipped mine back a week and a half ago for repairs and was wondering what the turn-around on them are. I thought I read 1 month somewhere before but I cant find the post. |
