Well, here's a problem. Every difficulty of STMB has jumps, so of course he could have missed those but it's also possible he used the crutches. _________________

Justin,
I apologise for the scepticism you are getting on the boards. The cynics are somewhat justified due to being misrepresented and/or lied to in the past by other folks claiming to be producers or journalists.
Having said that; have you tried posting on the boards at DDRUK or Cobalt Flux? It doesn't hurt to throw out a wider net. _________________

As a one legged ddr player in kentucky, I'm calling skepticism on this (even though I am talking to the guy right now.)
EDIT: Then again... maybe not. _________________

Yeah, Uno's pretty cool. He has a prosthetic, but I've seen him play without it. He missed most jumps (but got some with hands.)
Looks like you've already gotten in touch with him. _________________

Hi,
I own and run an arcade machine in Louisville KY and am friends with "Uno Lego". I'm cooperating with him to set up the video shoot that he talked with you about.
Hope everything goes well. I'm happy to help out in any way possible. |

Well I am proud to announce to you all that I AM the guy you see in the DDR video that many of you have been so eloquently speaking and ranting about. That video was from 2001 and it was where I placed 3rd in a DDR freestyle event. I've read through the various postings and have had to shake my head at many of the laughable comments. But I guess it's entertaining for some. To clear the air here about dancing with crutches......you consider it cheating or using a "3rd leg", well for most of you who are ignorant in your observations..... I actually use my existing leg and one crutch to hit arrows. I use various slide techniques and patterns when doing spinning rotations. As for the crutch on my left side that's merely for support and is NEVER used to hit arrows. I watched and learned to play from viewing Japanese and Korean players who actually dance on the machine with the tunes and arrow sets. I liked the aspect of the dancing part of the gameplay.....most americans follow the steps but it's like watching millions of the same patterns danced by everyone who plays. Then there are those who do nothing but play the hardest songs possible to impress themselves and the crowd. Those are people i consider to be "Power" players. And most of the people that consider themselves awesome players are mostly power players who have steps and songs memorized. Now granted it takes a great deal of stamina to pull off those tunes. Me on the other hand, I like the freestyle gameplay better, for one I was a breakdancer, now I consider myself to be a house dancer two vary freeform dance styles. But in my opinion "true freestylers" have a sense of movement to the arrow steps where they creatively use premade dance steps from the machine as they're being displayed and in turn move their feet in unique patterns (ex double-stepping on spaces above or to the side of arrows ) to maintain the beat or pulse while landing on arrows to pass the song but not look like the typical "DDR robot". When you watch my vid I kick my leg on an off beat while keepin the pulse so when I need to land the arrow i naturally time it to land back on pad when the beat comes. So before criticizing understand there's a method to how I play and there's a sense of uniqueness(if that's a word) that I attempt to bring upon playing DDR. This post isn't to knock anyone but to give you guys the true story. I am overwhelmed how many people have seen this vid and actually never realized how big this all got untill I was imformed that it was in a FHM(Alysa Milano issue 2004) magazine. Hope this info ispires more freestylers out there!
Peace BM333 aka Daniel S.
ps: for the record I have already contacted the Spike TV producer, so hopefully you guys get to see me on the show if it takes off, i'll represent the DDR world for you DDR hedz !!!!! |

Well I sense a tone of sarcasm in your post. That is an expected response Hilary....sigh But alas i'm not trying to set up or start a flame war as it is an utter childish thing and I honestly don't want to make you look like a fool. So touche ! As far as the jumps.....your point is ? I like DDR, I play the way I like to play just as all of you, so does it matter whether I can do a jump with crutches no legs two legs or my elbows? My first post was an honest post based off of what I read through this board. I have to assume the sarcasm comes from people who naturally have no rhythm and think because they are "DDR" players they automatically think they can dance. I watched uno lego's vid impresive, but that's still technical DDR one who hits the arrows for score, not DDR dancing. Which is how most of you who play this game. Give me a place or site where I can upload a video i'll show you what freestyle DDR is. Uno is great, but I guarentee if my tourney vid never got out, there wouldn't be an Uno Lego. So i'm glad to see that I can influence others to play this game who naturally wouldn't think it was possible with our situations. And my method of play is no different than Uno's the bars are his support just as my crutches are mine. |

this is a yousendit link of DDR freestyle players whom I have much respect for. They combine the technical aspect along with flare and truely display art of playing DDR and dancing. They have an excellent sense of rhytmical movement in their steps and land the arrows as the pass. Koshi is one of my favorite dancers as he does the double to "Holiday". I attempted this song to see if his steps were true and believe me they are! He even adds a lil MC hammer in there. The A-team vids were cool too the 2-partner routine was the first vid to get me interested in DDR. I played Beatmania series for years before the DDR craze. But until I saw that A-team vid I never had any interest in the dance simulation games. But all in all this is how I truely believe the game should be played. These vids were my inspiration to play.

Before I respond, I wanna say I started playing well before I saw your video. Your video, while impressive, was brought to my attention around 6-8 months after I started So trust me, there would have been an Uno Lego if you hadn't been around.
That said, I've got nothing against people who play freestyle or tech, but to argue what the true nature of DDR is, is a stupid arguement in and of itself. The programmed nature of the game is to hit the arrows and get as many perfects as possible for a higher score. That's how I was trained to play and my goal has been to AAA some of the songs in the game (which I've since done... twice ) That said, some people get more joy out of freestyling and looking good in front of a crowd (i.e. you). If that's what keeps you playing, then I'm glad you have that. It must take a lot of work to get that stuff down while playing a song and making sure you don't fail it. Either way, good job. I prefer technical. To me, it requires more precision and accuracy to get through the song with a (damn near) perfect score, and that's what keeps me going. Plus, at least for me, I haven't memorized any songs. I've just learned to sight read arrows and strengthen my foot & leg/eye co-ordination. There's nothing memorized about anything I do.
But really, who cares how you play the game? Freestyle or tech. A wise DDR player once told the world "The best DDR player is the one who has the most fun." You enjoy freestyle and that's cool. I've seen some cool freestyle stuff out there that I know would be a pain for me to do. I enjoy being technical and playing for score, partially because it's fun and partially because I wanna see how far I can compare to the rest of the DDR playerbase in terms of score. As long as we both have fun, who gives a damn as to what's really "DDR dancing"?
The other issue, concerning your crutches and me using the bar. After reading your explanation of using the second crutch for balance, it's no different than me using the bar so it shouldn't matter lol. For playing on one leg, yeah I can no bar it, but jumping around does put a huge strain on my knee and no offense, but I don't want to have to go through knee replacement surgery when I'm 25 because of a game. Hell, even the prosthetic I play with has damaged hinges so I'd like to try and preserve what I have, hence me using the bar.
But you know what? None of that matters. You play for style, I play for tech, and we're both having fun doing it. That's all that matters, right?

Quite honestly man, my rants and comments were in no way meant to aim at you at all, so apologies if you think i'm "bashing" you or what not. It's really my obeservations of playing this game at every place that i've played and from reading these posts. Basically my whole view is this , play DDR the way YOU enjoy it. I honestly don't see a contest in all this the whole "well he's better at tech or i'm better at freestyle, we are both people who have learned to adapt our "disadvantages" in DDR. For me
saying that tech is "not DDR" is proposterous. I have a high degree of respect for the tech dancers much like yourself. I guess my post may seem a little on the defensive side but given the circumstances you might see how that even came about. Uno you actually posted one of the more intelligent posts on this whole thread and I wish you continued success in the DDR world may you become the best tech dancer out there. All I have been trying to point out is that I am a freestyler for the skeptics, I can do jumps, and one legged people can play DDR be it tech or freestyle. On a note , I am 29 and have been on this game before it's release to western shores, I have no doubt that you have been an Uno Lego before this video craze has been out there. There needn't be a coronation for we are both kings in our method of DDR play. I just ask people to appreciate them for what they are. So Chris sorry for the ranting post but the tone of sarcasm caught my attention whether it to be funny or whether it to be a defense but do know there are no enemies here of Uno least of all me. If anything we need to discuss how Koshi ownz at double holiday !!!!!!!! and for the record the guys in the vids I posted are hybrids tech w/ freestyle ! Very impressive vids The A-team vids unzip those one-at-time and rename one of the files to wutever it gets all funky and overwrites the vids w a similar name. But these vids showcase that these guys can not just freestyle but keep the arrows in tact and in perfect score while doing it w/ an occasional miss. But Koshi is the bomb ! He does whole routine not missing a step. I actually danced along w vid to see if wut he hits is what the arrows do. Try it yourself and see....holiday double. Peace everyone !!!!! Uno pwnz all !!!!! |

I almost forgot to thank you for the comment I actually have another tourney vid I did same tune tho STMB.....placed 2nd that tourney, but I did do another tune in tourney I placed 2nd in, but can't remeber the name of the song. It was actually a lil more difficult than STMB. Well much thx and luv to Kayaku, Uno, and any others who enjoyed "our"vids. Again, I aim to inspire.....keep the DDR spirit going. |
