I would agree, unless you're not used to physical activity, in which case you should ease into it. Definitely consult a nutritionist or doctor.

I used "intense" to attempt to elucidate the fact that DDR is not as good exercise as, say, running a 5k (which is not difficult, but is "intense" compared to DDR).

I have maintained my normal diet of not eating healthy, and lost about 40 pounds in a little under a year.

You can't beat those results.

Legend Road would be hard, though, since it's an Oni course, and not all of us can read 1x Vivid (or even pass all the songs ponder.gif )

I'm not a 1X player either (at all), but it doesn't take that long to read it. The fact that it's an oni course means you put in more energy to keep comboing it, which is another reason why it's so effective. It isn't as good as sprinting, but playing Legend Road for say - two hours straight, is almost comparable.

I agree that DDR is best done with other exercise as well. If done intensely enough I suppose it could count as cardeovascular work, however that depends on how long you play and how intensely. I suggest lifting weights or doing crunches and other body building/toning exercises. Also drink plenty of water and portion your foods.
Good Luck!

I feel that it helps me maintain my weight, it would'nt necessarily make me lose any as I am slightly underweight anyway for my height. My friend however who has been playing for appprox 4 months has lost 28lbs with a concoction of both ddr and a diet. I believe it does help with weight loss but I don't think on its own would make much difference, but I suppose if you play alot for long periods of time it might.

Dont eat foods with a lot of sugar or fat.
No soda.
Drink lots of water.
And excersize.
I run at least 4 times a week for 2-3 hours at a time.
Ive lost 10lbs within the last 4 weeks.
You have to really commit to it or you wont get results.

Those who are saying you should leave out DDR are incorrect. Cardiovascular excesice is effective as long as you can get your Heart Rate up, preferably susatined at about 70-80% of MHR(maximum heart rate). This is very doable while playing DDR.

The following is very important if you are trying to lose weight:

1) To lose weight you need to spend more calories than you consume on a daily basis, this can be done by increasing excercise, decreasing caloric intake, or both.

2) You may want to buy a Heart Rate Monitor so you can make sure that you are in your target heart rate range while playing DDR. You may want to play on continuous mode (where you can select multiple songs and play them consecutively with no pauses in between). Determine your MHR with the following formula: MHR=217 - (0.85 × age).

3) To lose weight it is best to modify your diet to a High Protein/High Fiber/Low carb/Low fat. Many carb restricting diets neglect fiber, which is very important. Fiber, while it does count as a carbohydrate, is not actually digestable and therefore adds 0 actual calories. Protein is very important. Excersing whithout consuming enough protein will actually cause your body to start digesting muscle for energy.

4) Remember to replenish your fluids and salts before, during and after excercise. Properly hydrated muscles work better. Drink water (or sports drink) while playing, but dont chug it.

5) The more excersice you get, the higher your Resting Metabolic Rate will be. In plain english this means you will burn more calories even while sleeping, just by being more active.

6) Keep working at it! Don't give up! You will probably lose a bit of weight, and then hit a wall where your weight seems to stay the same for a while. Keep working though and you will continue to see results.

I've lost around 35 pounds playing ddr. I didn't really change anything else in my diet/excercise rutine. I think I also just have a pretty good metabolism anyways I was just outta shape, had been my whole life. I had never really committed to anything before.

Cutting your body off of something completely is a very bad thing to do. If you immidately cut the sugar or fat from your diet, it can cause more harm than good, you have to ease into it. You can easily drink 1-2 soda's every 3 days without death falling upon you I assure you. The key to knowing how much you can eat is knowing how much you BURN OFF. If you are a very active person or excersizing alot, you are allowed to eat/drink more sugary things obviously as you burn this energy off during the process of going outside.

I havent changed my diet at all, I started playing DDR at 215 lbs, I am now at 180lbs mostly due to crashing on PSMO... or the like...this took me about... 2 months? maybe?

i knew a guy that was about 220 lbs. and he had a diet and he lifted weights every once and a while but he played ddr for about 5 months on standard and heavy and he lost about 60 lbs. it was incredible to me that he could lose that much weight in that much time but he was really wanting to loose weight and i think that helped out a lot.

I've held weight pretty well. I only lost about 10 pounds since starting about a year ago. I look like I should be about 120 but I'm at 150.

Play DDR for about 10 hours a week if you can afford it. I would also suggest eating two balanced, large meals a day. Avoid snacks. Drink only water.

This will probably be an effective strategy.

i used to be kind of chunky (5'10" and at my highest weight 170-180) and i started watching what i ate and doing situps, pushups, and other general stuff that you can easily do at home as well as lifiting dumbells, but not much drastic. in addition i played DDR for several hours just about every day. i started losing weight really fast and i stopped even having to watch what i ate. i eventually dropped 30-40 lbs. i think combining it with a reasonable diet (doesnt have to be drastic) and some other exercise is the best bet

No it doesn't. Muscle just takes up less physical space.

Umm.. that's why it weighs more than fat. Muscle tissue is denser than fat tissue, therefore if you have the same amount of muscle and fat, that portion of muscle is going to weigh more.
