Maybe "Ignition-styled," but not from RedOctane. Then again, it's a 4th version of *something.* _________________

I have two thirty dollar flat pads. I can do most 9 steps and all others below it fine. I have had these soft pads for a year and a half. No problems.
I dunno, I take excellent care of them and they have never let me down.
Don't dis soft pads! |

I got a ignition 3.0 for my birthday. The next week I folded it so it would fit in my car trunk so I could take it to my friends house. Now the left arrow doesn't work. At all.
And on top of that, now my parents think ignitions suck and they won't let me buy a new one. |

Well, ther are tons of differences between the cheapo pads. Like comparing the Ofiicial Konami pads to my MadCatz. True, I need to tape both of them to the floor, but the Konami pads do have that no-slide bottom surface, so it does stay beter than the MC. BUT I have found my MC pads to last much longer, most likely since they are easier to fold on the creases between the buttons because they are thinner. AND since the MCs are thinner, when playing on a hard surface they give a slightly more accurate feel of playing in an arcade than the padded Konami pad. ALSO, the MC do have that 5 year warranty, as mentioned by ropeadope. Konami pads are only 90 days, same as any other product. I prefer my MCs, but other softpad brands are open to discussion by other members (I've only used these two pads, plus my cousin's Ignition (which I'm not too fond of, especially since the arrows indent upwards instead of downwards, like at the arcade), so I can't speak for the Pelican, EBGame pad, etc). _________________

Anywhoz, soft pads, I must say, they last freakin' forever, and unless you play like an idiot and rip 'em, they last, BUT they do messup a lot and you'll get a tonna lower scores. If you're gonna save up and you like to play 7-10 steppers, don't save up for an ignition, save up for an AfterBurner or a Cobalt Flux. Ignitions, from my 3 flippin' experiences have given me nothing but great scores, until 30 days later, right after the warentee, they bust. Left and down arrows break no matter what version you're using. Then you get no scores. Just got my AfterBurner from Red Octane, works great except the cbox is broken for Xbox and PC so I'm gettin' a new one for free let's see how that works out |

i had a wireless soft pad that lasted about a year(the middle of the pad fell the f&%$ OFF) but slid everywhere... i can't even remember what brand it was, but it asucked anyways.... i figured out later it was the only reason i couldnt do heavy... in other words: if you want to be a ddr expert, get a metal pad or a modded one |

I noticed how alexmon27 talked about how soft pads hold up until they rip. I had mine rip recently, and I fixed it up with a complete layer of duct tape. I chronicled the whole process here: http://ducttapeddr.cjb.net/
Just thought you might like to know. _________________

I ordered my CF pad a few days ago, so this question isn't nearly as important as it may have been weeks ago.
For those of you who use soft pads and do 9+ footers, how do you keep the pad from sliding all over the place? I've seen people nail it to plywood, does that kind of modding normally work? |

I have soft pads from GameStop and they've yet to let me down, I can play 9-10 fotters on them, the only problem I have using them is when I'm playing Doubles they slide on the floor, so in the middle of a song they end up a foot apart from eachother making it really hard. _________________

I own a Gamestop Ignition knockoff (50 dollar Pelican thick foam pad) and it works beautifully. The pads under the sensors are beginning to bend a little so I'm gonna slap a piece of plywood in with the foam (I already put a book under the problematic button and it fixed the problem)
But to be honest with you guys, once this thing breaks I'll probably go back to the 10 dollar softpads, plywood and plastic sheet mod them, and give that a whirl. Cheap, and I'll probably have some fun in the process _________________

i've had 3 softpads, 2 from MC, and 1 from Red Octane, and used to do testing/repairs for pads also. Most of them failed within 1 month, it would last 2 months if your lucky with everyday play. I'm never getting another softpad, nor buying one anymore. It's all metal pads for me from now on. If you don't have $100-300 to spend on metal pads, then at least purchase a dense foam pad like umm.. like the BNS DX-pad or some sort. It is much stiffer, handling & balance is better, and it feels more like an arcade, not to mention the life span is at least double. It's only for about $45 too. Instead of spending a $25 pad and having it break on u in less than a month _________________

About sliding pads, with the official Konami $20 pad, I get NO silding. Even after a nonstop course of LoM standard 4 times, the pad has not moved at all. This is on fairly flat and short carpet (i.e. the carpet isn't adding much grip). _________________

First of all, all of these pads have seen pretty much daily use, with a variety of song difficulties. But they have all certainly seen a lot of 9 and 10s, however, not 9 and 10s exclusively.
Ok, I have been using softpads since I started last July. I started off with MadKatz soft pads (PS2), and those lasted. I now have 3 of them folded in a corner, which I only use when taking my PS2 somewhere. Two of them are perfect, and one is waiting to be disected, but the only reason they don't see ouse that often is the sliding.
So, to try and fix the problem with sliding, I got a Gamestop pad. These are truly horrible. They only last about 3 months, and every month or so they change the design. I just purchased my third XBOX pad like this, and all three are different. The latest one is awful. Though the pad doesn't bunch, there's too much cloth on the top of the pad, so that bunches, causing the arrows to loose sensitivity (especially left and up). So I have to say, DON'T BUY A GAMESTOP SOFT PAD. I have not tried the Gamestop, Ignition style pad, but if it's anything like the $20 ones, it's not good.
Another things I would not reccomend is the cross platform MadKatz pads. I have only used one once, but it was horrible as far as respnse goes. It may have been a fluke, but an EB employee (whom I trust), told me that this was common.
Now comes the good part of this little soft pad advice reply. KONAMI SOFT PADS. These are the superior pads by Leaps and Bounds. They last a long time, and have the best response (I can PA easier on a Konami than any other soft pad). So I would suggest getting the bundle for the upcomiong release of Extreme 2, if you don't already have one of these (or another superior pad). These truly are good pads.
Now as far as Ignitions go, I can't say I've ever used one that worked. I've only used an Ignition 3.0, which was at Best Buy (RO had to sell out...). I was told the pad had just been set up that morning, and had only seen some beginner use (it was early in the morning, and I guess this guy had been there since opening). I began to play Tsugaru on heavy (the pad was sadly hooked up to a copy of Extreme ), with my normal hidden and 2x mods. I noticed I was screwing up a lot, so I exited the song, and began to test the arrows. Well what would you know. The left arrow doesn't work at all. After only begginner use, it could have only been like that to start with. The employee I had been talking to talked to his manager, who said they should put out another one so people don't get a bad impression on their product, so they put out another one. It would have worked, but the right and down arrows are usually considered to be pretty important. And good luck selecting a song without the aid of those X and O buttons. This was even worse than the first. So I just have to say from personall experience and advice from people I know, don't get an ignition!
I have to agree that you should get a CF if you can afford it, but if you can't, get a Konami brand pad. And no matter what the moron at Gamestop tells you, the gamestop pad IS NOT the same thing as a Konami pad. |

As a n00b, I'd get the MadCatz pad to try out first. Then as you get better, you would probably care about your scores, etc. and you can work yourself up to a high leve Ignition soft pad or a metal pad. _________________
