I was wondering does playing StepMania without a pad help you for playing DDR in the Arcade?

My answer: I sometimes like to learn rhythmically tricky stepfiles with Stepmania before I play them at the arcade, just so there aren't too many surprises when I actually attempt them on my feet.

It helps me when I have trouble with a songs rhythm...'cause with assist tick I hear the way to step perfectly, and my fingers don't override the song/tick as much as practicing on a pad via TV would.

but yeah, it does.

Of course it does. The first time I ever saw DDR was in an arcade far from where I live, I live in the middle of nowhere. I could only do butterfly on beginner, but I was hooked and I knew I wouldnt get many chances to play so I found stepmania and started playing on the keyboard and started to learn how to read arrows. The next time I went to the arcade I was getting Bs on standard, not too shabby for my second time E1.gif Now I own Ultramix 2 and recently cleared my first 10 footer (G2).

Also, my friend was terrible and got his bum kicked by beginner songs, but after two days with stepmania he can AA light songs.

Yeah, it does. If you're just starting out, stepmania is a great way to learn to read the arrows. Once you get better, its useful for learning the harder songs.

Yes and No.

Yes: It helps if you've already played on pad before. I personally have used SM to learn to pass Bag and R&P, but other than that I don't use SM.

No: I personally know someone that was a guinea pig for research of my friends. They wanted to see if someone that has never played on a pad or in arcade could be good their first time if they played SM alot. Nope, he wasn't. He was actually pretty crappy for being able to do heavy on SM.

Reading ability is half the battle for some songs, I play any song 200bpm or under on 1x flat sudden just as well as normal speed mods thanks to SM ^^

It definitely helped improve my reading skills. I can do Bag on x1 and A it on SM...though I still have yet to try it on an Extreme machine, since we don't have one locally. Anyhow, it's just a natural point of logic...if you play enough songs (even if you're using a keyboard), you're going to eventually drill certain pattern sets into your head and be constantly reminded of them when you're stepping later. Things that might have eluded you once before just become rather mundane after awhile. I guess it's helpful as a caution for tracks you're not familiar with before you hit the arcade too.

Other than arrow-reading (which I got plenty help with from IIDX), no. I don't see how being able to do some of the stuff really good SM players do (like AAA Toph's No.13) would translate to the arcade, since it IS keyboard play. I'm not sure how many people play keyboard compared to pad, but I think there may be more keyboard players... Prove me wrong? E1.gif

Bag is just plain annoying, but I might practice on SM to work out the many kinks I have with this song...

First off, as it might help you learn how to read arrows, your comp screen and the machine screen are most likely diff. sizes, so either speed setting you put it on is going to be diff from the machine's speed rate. second, just cause your fingers move fast, doesn't mean your feet/legs move that fast. I can AA fury of the storm, C400, no rate mods, assist tick, but I can't AAA any of the Max's on pad, because i just can't move that fast (yet). And Fury of the Storm (If you've ever played it, 13 footer) is (along with many other songs on SM) physically impossible to play on pad.

For me, I only us SM with I can't go to the arcade, i'm learning/memorizing a new song, I'm bored, or, Just to have fun (I like to put like, 7 or 8 diff mods on). Just don't over use it, or you'll be hurting later on.

Well of course he means in his opinion; he said it!

Anyway, I thought I'd point out that visualization often improves physical performance in sports. So in theory, if one plays Stepmania and thinks of the steps in terms of actual movement, they can improve.

If you play with a certain key configuration, the mind actually registers the arrows as cross-overs and spins as if you were playing with your feet. It's pretty nifty.
