I was around 1 or 2 years ago for one of those those arguments, and incidentally 1 or 2 years ago I was taking Japanese I. I ended up asking my teacher about it to shut everyone up. riiight.gif

Tsoo-Gah-Roo.

EDIT: The only reason I put "soo-gah-roo" is because I had no idea how to phonetically write "tsu", I swear.

I was taking Japanese I last year too, and they definately wouldn't have separate syllables for "tsu" and "su" if they were pronounced the same.

I stand corrected. But it's hard to phonetically write/type "tsu"!

"Tsoo"? E19.gif

Tsugaru can be done two ways:

Sue-gah-roo
Ta-Sue-gah-roo

Nope, neither of those is correct.

First, it's not an "S" sound at the start. It's a "TS" sound.

Second, it's only a three syllable word, not four. (Might wanna pick up some Japanese language lesson sound files and listen to the difference between "su" and "tsu.")

I've always pronounced it as Su-sa or Shu-sha.

And a Japanese friend of mine doesn't pronounce much of the "u" in tsugaru. su can be pronounced like an "s" with a sligh "uh" at the end"

i always said Zoo-Za, so it's good to know the actual way its pronounced. However, things i've heard DDR-wise in reference to horrible pronounciations.

Tsugaru -
*TA-SOO-GA-ROO
*TSUG-AUH-RO

Sakura
This being a favorite being that i took japanese up to 6 in high school, and few can pronunce this in arcades with a proper japanese accent.

*Suh-krr-ra
*Sah-ko-ra
and my favorite
*The Sign

My mom learned Japanese as a kid and says Sakura:

Sah-Coo-Lah.

Ah, isn't there no differentiation beteen the letters L and R in the Japanese language, sort of like the whole "fu" and "hu" deal?

Yeah. I think it's more of an "R" sound than an "L" sound, but it's more of a mix than it is either one alone.

It's weird. If you listen to it expecting to hear an "R," it sounds enough like "L" that you think "wait, wasn't that an 'L'?" and vice-versa. That's why, when you listen to someone Japanese speaking English, it sounds like they get almost every R/L sound wrong. They're all off enough that it sounds like the opposite.

At least, that's the case in my experience.

My mother just has a Japanese-esque/Asian accent sometimes when she speaks English so that her l's sound like r's and vice versa.

yeah, the l sound doesn't exist in japanese language.

for the *ra* syllible in sakura, it sounds kind of like you're about to roll your tongue as you say the syllible. Like somewhere between an r and a d sound.

You shouldn't have put Tsugaru in the title of this thread in the first place.....

The 't' is pronounce in Japanese, but "ts" does not appear at the start of any native English words, so people don't like to pronounce it that way.

I want to know how people pronounce "!". My stepfile for it is labeled "bang" and I've seen it called "bang" before on the forums... but how do you get "bang" out of "!"?

BTW, best sentence ever:
Have you ever played !? X-D
