I play DDR and have asthma E2.gif. It sucks, because I have good stamina, but with asthma, I have an attack every time I attempt a ten foot song. Does anyone have any advice preferrably from someone who has or has had asthma.

I personally do not have asthma but my friend does. I play with him every now and then. He started before me mainly because he could afford the game (me was cheap).

He was one of those with severe asthma but he just loved ddr. I mean the kid was crazy. I had to run up to his room to get his inhaler every now and then. Belive it or not. By playing constantly (and having the inhaler taped to his pants *joke*) he gradually got better. Honestly, i don't know if it's because it gradually went away because of age or of ddr but he has alot more endurance now then he did before.

Most poeple with asthma claims that they have felt better after getting into shape and working out daily. I don't know for sure. Just don't kill yourself. If you can't do it you can't but hopefully you will be able to eventually.

I'm also an asthmatic, but my asthma hasn't bothered me recently with DDR. Do you use your inhaler before you play and whenever you feel tight? If not, that might be your problem. E13.gif I know it probably looks dorky, but it'll help you in the long run if you brought it with you for when you need it.

Take time to focus on your breathing.... make sure you keep your breathing COMPLETELY controlled and you should be able to avoid any asthema attacks... this will probably involve you having to know the song relatively well so you can focus on your breathing and not on the steps so much....

I have asthma, and my stamina was horrible! I used to get tired just walking up the set of stairs in my house (and there's only 15 stairs lol).
But then I started playing DDR, and my stamina got WAY better. Now I can play MAX 300 without getting too tired (usually only need a 15 sec break).

buttocks mar...

i have asthma too, the problem is with many people, they say they have asthma therefore they will not do an activity, doctors say that people with asthma should excercise more. Because of excersice, asthma can become acute and you may never show symptoms again.

agreed, also make sure you know your physical limits. you can improve them just take it slow and work on one thing at a time.

it would suck to have asthma and like DDR. my friend has an asthmatic disease (like asthma, but it goes away eventually), and his parents aren't letting him go outside at all! maybe they are over doing it.

EDIT: wait, i remember why they wouldn't let him go outside. it's because that he has allergies, and if his eyes start puffing up, they don't want to mix two medications, because he's already using an inhaler.

I take my inhaler when I feel an asthma attack coming on, and it lets me play just fine E1.gif

Yay im improving thanks to you guys. b4 I could only do max 300 with music speed of 2 and then I would have to take a 10 minute break, now I can do max 300 with music speed 4 and I only need a 30 second break. Eventually, I'll probably be able to do it with music speed 5. ty biggrin.gif Although, help is still appreciated. Btw, I can't use an inhaler, because of allergies.

You can't even use an inhaler? Now that sucks. I had really bad asthma when I was younger and as I got older I guess it faded away. ::shrugs::

I too have severe asthma, but happen to be very talented in running. Somehow those two usually don't mix, but i get through the race usually and then have some hardcore attacks afterwards or during. I've basically tried every medication through the years to no avail. I knew i had allergies, and was taking many medications for them, but the doctors didn't think that testing for specific allergies was necessary. I decided to get it done anyone given that everything else had already failed or didn't work well enough. So i figure out that i'm basically allergic to everything but molds, and i'm highly allergic to dusts and pollen. So i get allergy shots and it has really helped my running and physical activities. so i would highly recommend trying immuneaptheropy or atleast get tested for allergies.

You're allergic to your inhaler? What symptoms did you get when you used it, and how many times did those symptoms come up assuming that you've used it more than once?

Other than that, you should just build up your cardiovascular and eventually you will be able to do more rigorous excercise. Running short distances every day will help this a lot. but if you do; run at a pace that will not cause you breathing troubles, run for a distance that is reasonable to your condition, and try to run with someone else if possible incase of an attack.

My friend claims that DDR cured his asthma, and it hasn't come back since. so there's another testimonial for you.

as many other ppl, I have asthma (use to be really bad, got into skating and ddr, got better). Nowadays, I don't have any attacks in our upstairs arcade, but in the downstairs one, I'll get one even on the 7 footer songs. our downstairs arcade is very humid, dusty, hot, and has poor ventilation. While the upstairs one is none of those. My suggestion, try moving where you play to a more "friendly" enviornment until you condition gets better. Might work, might not.
