Five buttons, a strum button, and a whammy bar. But nobody knows right now how those buttons correspond to PSX buttons, so the GF strum control could end up being mapped to one of the chord buttons, for example.

Slightly off topic but...you probably already know this but they make GF controllers if that's what you're looking for. If you're trying to kill two birds with one stone by only getting one controller, it sounds like you may be out of luck.

So for the people that have played the demo, do you think fans of GF would find it to be a good alternative or is it really that different?

i got to play a couple songs today at ax. the demo guitar there only had 5 buttons plus the pick,. but so far, the game seems really promosing. i like how the notes scroll, they start small at the top, and then get larger as they reach the bottom. the hold notes were different, but they were placed well. my only real complaint was it seems to easy, even with 5 buttons i could almost pass expert songs, i normally can only pass lower medium songs on guitar freaks. but providing they increase the difficulty, i could, and would give up guitar freaks and move to guitar hero.

super bump!

I recently got to play this at GenCon a couple days ago, so I thought I'd throw a little input where I can.

Songs:
There were 12 songs in the demo they had, but they said they had over 40 done, and were shooting for about 60 by the release. Sadly, I didn't have a camera, so I only remember a few of the songs that were there.

Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand (which is pretty much all anyone played)
Iron Man - Ozzy Osbourne
Thunderkiss 65 - White Zombie
Symphony of Destruction - Megadeath
I Love Rock and Roll - no idea
I know there was a RHCP and Hendrix song there, but I don't remember which ones. I only know the Hendrix song *wasn't* Fire, which is the song they wanted to get, but weren't able to.

Difficulty:
Well, the only song I got to play was Iron Man on hard, which wasn't really too difficult, and I'm not that good at Guitar Freaks. However, as far as I can tell, there were no difficulty ratings, so it may have just been an easy one. There were four difficulty levels, I think Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert. The easy mode seemed to only use the first 3 buttons instead of all 5.

Game Modes:
I didn't get to see a lot of this, but there was a free play mode and a career mode. I know in career mode it sorta works like Karaoke Revolution where you start in smaller venues with easier songs and you work your way up. You get to select a character and a guitar, and they said there would be unlockables of both characters and guitars.

Gameplay:
The gameplay was really nice. Sorta like Frequency with 5 columns. The actual playing is just like Guitar Freaks, hold the buttons and strum the pick. There are hold notes in the game too, just hold the button and strum once. They said in the final version that the controller will have a whammy bar so you can play with the pitch during the holds. There are also "Wailing Bonuses". While not called that, they were pretty much the same thing. Some of the notes would just have a light around them, which was a bit hard to notice at first, and that was how you knew to tilt the guitar.

There was also a bar that would slowly fill up as you did well, and when it filled up completely you got "Star Power". Which basically put on a flat noteskin (all of the notes coming down were just silvery instead of colored for the button) and you get a 4x score multiplier.

I went back to play more my second day there (which would have been day 3 of GenCon) but they weren't letting anyone play it, since someone had almost broken the controller, which was still a prototype. All in all, I was *very* impressed with the game, and I'm preordering it as soon as it's available. I was told the tenative release date was sometime in November.

So in true Harmonix(non-KR at least) tradition, these are the actual artists' renditions? Sounds awesome... but dang, November seems like a painfully long wait. I'm sure it'll pay off, though.

Symbion/Kasson Crooker additions would help greatly in that respect, HMX. :)

They are taking preorders now for Guitar Hero at EB and Gamestop. The game and guitar will be $79.99 and released on Nov. 1st. Yay!

I'm wondering how the guitar quality compares to Konami's first GF controller? I hope the guitar's weight and size is decent, as I've heard that the GF controller that Konami released was smaller and lighter than the arcade version.

I'd like to hear some hands-on reviews of the game before buying it though. Old GF games are expensive so this might be enough to tide me over until GF/DM V are released for PS2.

i would think its the same size and weight as the asc guitar that konami uses, it looks pretty beefy.

and i would also like to know if the controller is compatible with previous gfdm titles. if it is, them in all set.

i got the game yesterday and have been playing most of the time since then. its an AWESOME game, imo, way better than guitar freaks because of the hammer-ons/pull-offs, presentation, etc. and the controller is also better than even konami's...built real solid and everything responds really well. im really impressed with everything about it. i havent tried any of my GF controllers or if the RO controller works with GF's since ive been too busy playing the game but ive heard some say it works, others say it doesnt. once i try it, ill let you know but regardless, the game is worth getting. its by far the most fun ive had with a game since i first discovered GF's E1.gif
