Pretending you are worse than you really are at something (half-assing while playing), a very deadly thing in public bowling leagues devil.gif

It can lower some opponents decision on how much to give. If they think youre not that good, then they may not push as hard as they might if they knew you were really good. Some people will always push their hardest though, so its not always effective.

If there is a qualification round you can do bad in that they will put you against a easy person.

It is also often used by players who would do really well in Low Heavy, but finish near the end in High. They would rather do badly in qualifying and win Low than play at their level in the qualifiers and do not so well in High.

I actually use the phrase "sandbaggin' it" in regular conversation. I first heard it from an old soccer coach yelling at people who were running the laps slowly. (e.g., "Hey, Spaghetti&Meatballs/Twinkie/Ho-Ho/anything that could make you fat easily, quit sandbaggin' it and git yer buttocks in gear, er I'm gunna make ye' run extra suicides!!") I guess the idea of "sandbagging" ~ "being lazy" is a broader definition, encompassing the phraseology used by DDR tournament players.

@Syneasthesia: I never remembered that. My coach used to say that, too.

Carpetbaggers were Northerners who went to the South during Reconstruction after the Civil War, seeking such things as becoming gov't and business leaders in the defeated South. The term arose because the travelers carried all their belongings in carpet bags.

Sandbagging -

Good defense against really cocky people. Act like you suck then when it's time to play against them, kick their buttocks.

Tournaments it's a bad and embarassing thing. Dont sandbag in a tournament, play heavy for god sakes.

I agree, sandbagging is really pathetic. If you can do heavy, do it, don't be a pansy.
