DDR's popularity, dangerous?
I would believe it would be dangerous, because if it's too low, no one will care about your playing, the machines, or your feats.
Also, if it's too high, everyone will be playing it, and you won't stand out, so the popular ppl at schools play (the ppl who orginally didn't play) they'll get more attention (even if you're way better than him/her).
But, at least it won't die out (yet).

i think DDR is right where it needs to be. People that dont play know what the game is a respect you if you are good and you stand out from the crowd. If it gets more popular, the jocks and people will start playing it and only be able to do butterfly and damdiriram on light and they will get all the attention, and that pisses me off. so, right now DDR's popularity isnt at a dangerous level, its right where it should be _________________

I agree with xpguardian. DDR does seem to be getting more popular, and if it does continue, I'll really miss being able to "wow" people who've never played before.
The uniqueness of it really gives it a charm. |

You guys think that you can still "wow" people who haven't really seen the game before?
I used to "wow" people by passing Paranoia BASIC. And I'm not even "old school." Now I full combo Paranoia Rebirth Heavy and people don't say a word.
But the special thing is that I don't care. Who cares if you don't stand out? If you're interested in standing out then maybe you should get better at the game. I have fun and I play what I want. That's all I care about. Whether it becomes immensely popular or not has no bearing on my level of fun (except for whether or not they bring out more games). _________________

Yeah, I agree with Spiek, because the game is hardly novel anymore and mostly everyone knows how it works and everyone's gotten good at it. I chuckle to myself sometimes when I think about how stuff like Afronova or Butterfly Upswing Basic used to be THE song to beat, and anyone who could pass that was considered "good".
If you're looking to be good and take the game seriously, then you should beyond just trying to "impress the crowds". If you're playing for fun, then popularity should be a non-issue. |

Put the desire for glory aside, folks.
The increasing popularity means more sales for Konami. That spells more of an incentive for the company to keep making games for the US. Sure, that keeps the better of us from feeling 'special' anymore, but I'd rather have DDR than have the "wow" factor without the game's continued growth. |

You'll need to think of DDR like skateboarding. It's not publicized in the media a whole lot but a lot of people do it almost with an 'underground' feel. Obviously, skateboarding has been around for a long time, and that's something you can do just about anywhere, unlike DDR. _________________

xpguardian = yes
If it is too popular the "wow" factor ( ) would be gone. That doesn't really bother me, but it is a pretty good point. As long as the stupid rich popular people don't play, I'm fine. |

About the only people who ever seem to be impressed anymore are parents who have been living in a cave who have never seen or heard of DDR. They will come up to me be like OH MY GOD YOU ARE SO GOOD WHAT ARE YOU SOME SORT OF EXPERT for the silliest achievement, like full comboing a 7 foot song, or something, and then ask me questions about how to play and stuff. Perhaps they find me approachable because I'm older, or something. Perhaps it's because I'm not scary like Spike is.
But, I'm with Spike. I don't play to impress, I just play to have fun. About 99% of the time I don't even notice if people are looking anymore. |

i think a few people heard me wrong. I dont play to impress others or to show off (although it feels good to have people "wow"ing at you). i play the game for myself, and no one or nothing else. I like the fact that people know what DDR is and have maybe tried it before. So when they see you play the know the effort that goes into it and they respect you. But on the other hand. i dont want it to get too unpopular because then konami would basically be out of business and that is no good. and if its too unpopular, people see you and just sorta pass by it not giving it a second thought because they think that its just a "freak game".
another thing i see happening that i dont like, is that DDR is becoming sort of a passing stage in kids lives. they play for a year or two and then drift away. I like to see people stay with it for years and years because they love the game, and arent just playing for the attention of others. _________________

Perhaps I'm an odd one out of the group then. I love attention. I love hearing people "wow", especially if they've never seen it before. I've played for one year, and I know I'm not very good at all, and never have claimed to be, even when I'm praised for whatever I've done.
On the other hand, I spend countless hours alone with my Cobalt Flux trying to master how to do spins and absolute body-freezes on freeze arrows, the whole point of playing a game
Good discussion, by the way. |

The ITG machine is virtually ignored in the Pirate's Den in Fargo, me and another kid are practically the only two people who EVER USE IT save for little kids who think it's DDR. The Extreme machine on the other hand almost always has someone on it. |
