Same thing happened with me, but keep playing... after a while the problem stopped entirely for me. Now it happens rarely if at all (once every 20 songs maybe). It's not an issue with the pad. Something is disrupting the connection between the computer and control box.

On my ps2 it works marvelously. I AAAed my first set of songs, and got a 15 great FC on Paranoia Survivor. No complaints there.

how long is a while exactly? i played maybe 10 songs before giving up.

or maybe you will be waiting for a year or 2 before the suit is settled and then an even better mat will be out for half the price but your afterburner will just then be shipping and you will be like " dangit, why didnt i just order the mat without itg". ya this isnt very constructive or anything so im gonna shut up now.

Mine arrived this morning. It seems to be working really well. My only complaint is that the DHL guy was pretty rough with it. Even with big "FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE" he dropped it on its corner. But it seems to be working fine. Loving it!

I got mine around an hour ago, and I can say this is the best home pad I've ever played on. It took me a bit to get the pad outta the box... and it worked quite well. Tried Jam Jam Reggae on Stepmania and AA'd it on my first go, but I have the same problem that some other people have. I can only go as far as 1/2 a song without the pad 'disconnecting' itself and plugging itself back. Other than that, it's a great pad.

Well, finally, my two babies came in the mail. These are amazing so far... they've stood up to the initial bashings of LOM heavy, CSFILSM, paranoias, and loots more. We'll see how well they last. They're beautiful too... i'll post some pictures of them tomorrow.

After messing with this thing all evening, I found a fix that may work until I can get a response from redoctane.

Which by the way, I would highly recommend you guys call them, or email them and let them know there is in fact a problem.

Anyways, here's what I did.

download this: http://www.redcl0ud.com/files/XBCD_DDR.cab

extract it to a folder.

open up XBCDddr.inf

Look under [DeviceList] and add this line and save the file:

"XBCD XBox DDR Pad"=Install, USB\VID_1430&PID_8888 ; Afterburner

Now open up device manager, and go under "Human Interface devices"
it will be listed as "USB Human Interface Device"

Update the Driver, Install from specific location, choose "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install" then choose the folder you extracted the files to.

That should be it. So far I haven't had any disconnection issues. The only downside is that the timing seems to be just slightly off as compared to before. I'll play with the global offset and see what I can come up with. If anyone else would like to help out with this, or if you have any trouble, just drop me an IM.

Is the disconnection problem PC only? If someone can verify that it works very well with xbox, and that the doubles connector is somewhat decent, I'm ordering two tomorrow.

Input?

This may sound like a stupid question, but for all of the afterburner owners... did yours come with the center island covered in white material and the back two islands in blue? If this is just like tape covering how do I get it off?

It certainly did come covered in the way you describe. All you do is dig into the plastic with your fingernail to get it started and then just peel it all off. There should also be a clear covering over the arrows and back "RedOctane" logo pannel.

Just use your fingernails to get them all started at a corner and just take a few minutes to peel them all off. Don't worry, your not going to damage anything by doing this. When your done you'll have a nice shiney pad that looks as good as it plays E4.gif

Update on my xbox/ps2 issues.

RedOctane's Customer Support sucks. So far I've gotten 1 email about the disconnect/Please Insert Controller 1 problem, and all they said was, try a new breakaway cable. Well, I did that. It didn't help.

The problem has gone from being every 10 steps to being every other song. But it's still annoying because you get boos when that message is up.

It's been five days since I first contacted them and they have not yet gotten back to me on a RMA number to send it back. Other than that 1 email asking me to try a new breakaway cable, I haven't heard a damn thing. This is getting very old. The least they could do is send me a swap a control box, as I'm fairly sure the problem isn't in the pad. The please insert control 1 message occurs even when the pad itself is not in use! It happens when it's sitting all by itself, nobody touching it.

I'm thinking about quitting DDR, honestly. I am very upset about this pad and the lack of support. I may have to get my credit card involved if RedOctane does not offer a return/refund/exchange by the next week. I have spent more time dealing with busted pads than I have actually playing, and I've spent more money on pads than I've spent on my actual XBOX.

Very disappointed with RedOctane. Very disappointed with their customer service.

And the pad does not work with XBOX.

new problem:

after the intial night of disappointment i decided to wait until the next morning to try again. so i did and nothing had changed so i stopped. a few hours later i plugged the pad back into my laptop and a message said that the usb port had exceeded its power or something like that and it had a power surge, now the computer wont even recognize it.

i also sent a message but have not received any response.

Whew, wow, I'm very not impressed with these problems from you guys.

Guess I'll just have to get a second flux instead of two of these. Thanks for the input. Too bad too frown.gif

I don't know about the xbox, but I can verify that the disconnection problem happens on Macs as well. It has happened to me twice, and I had to quit StepMania and reopen it to fix the problem. I also unplugged the controllers, but I'm not sure if I had to do that or not. Next time it happens I'll try just quitting and reopening SM. However, I do know that just unplugging and replugging does not fix it without quitting SM.

I've been playing several hours a day for a few days and it's only happened twice. I would attribute it to a fluke if not for all of you reporting the same problems. I do believe the pads themselves are fine, but the control box must be flaky. I thought it was the software, but since it appears to happen across 3 platforms (Mac, PC, xbox) it must be the control box. Has it happened to anyone on the PS1 or PS2? Are there alternative control boxes that work with the connector on these pads?

Actually, come to think of it, I've got 2 pads and each one of them has only disconnected once. So really it's once per pad, not one pad 2 times.

On the plus side... these pads, despite the disconnect issue which so far hasn't come up often for me, are GREAT to play on. I love being able to tell where my feet are at. To me the disconnection issue is a bug that RedOctane will HAVE to fix, so I'm still happy with the pads, just annoyed that I have to wait for them to fix the problem.

I play on an Xbox and I've yet to get any problems out of my pad. (knock on wood) Seriously, the thing runs great. The pad is still under warranty so you should be able to sort the problem out.

Yeah I love this pad. Sorry about that last post I was kinda in a hurry. Ever since I figured out how to hook up the USB cable (detach the XBox cable and replace) I have been playing nonstop on Stepmania ever since (which it works flawlessly on with the exception of the conflict my particular stepmania program has with other programs on my comp causing it to focus on other applications), averaging an SDG on every song and about in the teens-twenty's with 10-footers. Since my full pic/vid review is still in the making, I will make a quick one now while I am still on.

The pad came double-packaged and was suprisingly handled VERY well in the shipping (hence the "FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE" writing on it). The pad was an absolute beauty once I got it out and peeled the plastic covering off the pad and the vacuum sealed plastic stuff off of the arrows. Very shiny and sleek-looking.

Once I put the pad to the test, the first thought that came into my mind was "wow I am suprised this thing didnt cost as much as the CF". So far, it is of perfect quality. The arrows are, of course, lowered and feel almost identical to the arcade except how it slides just a TINY bit (I am not a big fan of the stuff they put on the bottom but it could slide a bit cuz I use it on concrete flooring). I am interested to see how long it will last with me weighing 225 lbs. and stomping it.

The polycarbonate arrows are perfect and feel invincible.

The pad squeaks a bit but it just has to be worn in.

The control box works perfectly on XBox, PS2, and PC.

The only doubt I have in my mind about this pad (which I am a little concerned about) is the fact that since it has a 90 day warranty, they could've designed it so that it will start malfunctioning right after the period ends (that exact thing happened with my Ignition pad). Even though this pad is kick@$$, RedOctane is a business and will do its best to make money. However, I could be wrong and hope that I am.

Hmm... all this makes me really glad that I am a PS2 user!

It seems that all these problems that are occuring with the c-boxes only affect X-Box, PC, and Mac. It appears as if no one (myself included) has had any problem with the PS2 connection.

So I would still say that if you are planning on using this pad with a PS2 that it is deffinately worth every cent. Ya just cant go wrong with the

"Afterburner + PS2 = Happiness!!"
