i thought every internet lingo was made up.

like PWN, OWN, stuff like that...

thats pretty interesting though

whats the history of PWN though? isnt it like this guy typed in own but accidently put in a p instead of o, and he submitted his post without realizing the mistake, and people liked it?

Another history bit is that the black flag was commonly used with the irish when they first faught against england. the black flag was meant to scare the english into believing pirates were attacking them, so that the english would attack the pirates instead of the irish. it almost worked too, until the irish were found out, then, one of the bloddiest wars was faught, possibly second only to the civil war.

(hope i could be of some service)

(i don't know if this has anything to do with ddr, or the slang used for the scoring system stuff, but if you do, and can interperate this, post ur ideas of how this might relate?)

Foy, this is from Southern Californian perspective, we always thought it came from you Seattle guys. I know "Black Flag" did mean on the last step for a while - but then just came to mean just one great. We use "True Black Flag" now for last step. It'd be interesting to know the evolution of the term.

Speaking of the Californian perspective, I would like to see a new thread someday that tells who orignally came up with S4R and how they got there. Sudden Shuffle SSR (heavy flat by default). But that is a discussion for a differant thread.

S4R - I'm pretty sure that came out of SoCal. My earliest recollection of S4R being tossed around was when cats like Masa (old admin of defunct DDRManiac boards), Miss Hikari, and other SoCal folk were starting to do it on 3rd Mix circa mid-2000. I wouldn't be surprised if Osmin or Masa had gotten the S4R concept from Japan (although at the time, Osmin mentioned that most players in Japan never played with any mods, even in tournaments.)

It caught on to NorCal shortly thereafter -- Where S7R was born! (Sudden, Shuffle, Sinking, Special, Six-panel, SSR) Needless to say, Drop Out was never beaten on that mode. *heh*

I remember those days. Sinking is now called reverse and special (special speed) is now called boost if I remember correctly. I remember playing a lot of sinking high speed shuffle just before 6th mix came out.

Another tid bit of history, did you know that at the orignal test location for 6th mix that the extra stage was not just 1.5x reverse, but 1.5x reverse boost. However ZERO people passed it and thus boost was axed from teh required mods.

I can't belive that "black flag" has stuck and is used on many differant boards. Anyway, where did black flag come from and what the hell does it mean?

The 5 legged man (Derik Head) races cars. He told me once upon a time that if you drive in such a manner where you might kill someone that you will get a black flag. This black flag is not a warning, it is a one time single mistake that will end your race (it may even end your carrear, I'll have to ask, its been years since I discussed this with him).

The point of the black flag is that one mistke makes it impossible for you to finish the race. Just as one great makes it impossible for you get get a AAA. Just one step, and you can NEVER get a AAA for that song. Just one black flag and you can never place in that race regardless of what position you were in.

When you are playing a song and you see that great come up, it is just like the driver that saw the black flag, it spelled the end, no matter how well you drive after that you can not place. No matter how well you step after that great you can not get a AAA.

I got busy with school and time passed with me being away from the DDR scene. When I returned people had actually started using my saying of black flag, yet they had no idea where it came from or what it meant. I heard of green flag (which should mean 1 lap to go?), red flag, blue flag and so on. I was like what the heck? Racing does not have a red or blue flag. They have yellow, but no one talked about a yellow flag.

Turns out people liked the idea of the black flag, one mistake idea. They ran with this idea and created new lingo. Blue flag meant all perfects and 1 blue step (one good). Red flag meant all perfects and one red step (one miss). Anyway you can figure out the rest of the flags from this.

A green flag became what the old black flag was and now the black flag was suppoed to be all perfects and one great IF the great was on the very last step.

Why the last step? The green flag was named buy some guys up in seattle that new about an intresting event that happend during the 1st 2 days after 6th mix came out in seattle (way before it was playable as anything other than an extra stage). I had played max300 and failed it several times. On the 2nd day I made it all the way through the song and jumped on the final freeze arrows. People Cheered and I through up my hands in excitement. The weight of me throwing up my hands cause me to drop a freeze arrow and I FAILD again. No one had even seen the song beat in that region. For a time if you falid a song on your final step in the northwest people would say you "foyed" it. So back to the black flag. The same people that were around durign the days when I faild on teh final step of max300 decided that since I came up with black flag, they would say that it was only a black flag if you got the great on the final step.

I think that does it as to where this lingo came from. To those of you that read this and are from the northwest and remeber something I left out, feel free to post it and I'll edit the thread. E1.gif

Hope you enjoyed the history lesson.

thats really interesting, i myself hate the term "backflag" in ddr extreme, it keeps me from getting a AA or AAA... frust.gif

I have no idea who came up with pie, but it was a term for all 10 footers. Cata is short for catastrophic, the name for 9 footers started in some mix forever ago, maybe 3rd...
Pie...that makes me laugh.
