Staple gun in hand

I'm about slap down some floor covering to attach two softpads to one inch thick particle board. I just had a question that I never thought about until now. How many inches of space should be in the middle between the two pads? I honestly can't remember how they are apart at the arcade. I was wondering if anyone here might be able to place a good guess or would know specifically to save me from a trip across town with a ruler?
