I need help with stepfile creation for heavy.

Also, I want to get together with someone on creating a couples dance for "Dueling Banjoes" or that song that has the banjo and the guitar "dueling". I can't seem to remember the name. Either way, I figure it would make for a kick buttocks couples heavy chart.

Turn off fast loading in stepmania options. It will reload the graphic, thus make it show up

make sure the filename is also... SONG-bg.png

naming it -bg makes it easier to know which is which

Is there a way I can make my banner (in the song selection screen) an animated *.GIF or does SM not support such features yet?

I'm not sure if this is the proper thread for it, but I searched through the archives a bit and couldn't find any other relevant ones, so... Still, if this isn't in the right place... um, blame my being new here. riiight.gif

Anyway, I've been working on a personalized theme for Stepmania and I was wondering a few things. Is there a way to add a Beatmania-style genre indicator to the select screen? Maybe there's some way to make use of the #GENRE tag I see in .dwi's once in awhile. If not, well, is there a way to make the CD title not spin? Last time I tried that, it somehow made the select screen freeze.

Also, is there a way to change which mods are used for Extra stages?

Well, I'm not too well versed in how to make stepfiles in Notepad, but I can tell you this. You see the keypad on the far right side of most keyboards? You can use that for reference on what number represents what arrow. Like, 1 is a left/down jump, 2 is down, 3 is a down/right jump, etc. It also uses A and B for left/right and up/down jumps, but I forget which is which. I can't really adequately explain anything about the formatting, though, since it looks like "40206" for an 8th run (I think; not familiar with the terminology yet, either) and such.

With Stepmania, though, it's much easier (IMO) thanks to being a visual editor. Just use the 1, 2, 3, and 4 keys for left, down, right, and up respectively. If you're also adding steps on a second pad (i.e. doubles or battle or something), it's 5, 6, 7 and 8 accordingly.

Okay here is my question if the left=4 and right=6 and down=2 and up=8 then what is zero for? The gaps between the songs correct? That is what I am led to believe but is that correct? So what is actually easier to create with step-mania or notepad? Cuz i am new to this whole creating thing, but am very interested in it so just let me know...

Yeah, the zero is for when there's no arrow. Sorry, forgot to mention that.

Personally, I find using StepMania's built-in editor to be easier. Like I said last time, it's visual, so you can see the steps as you're plotting them. Also, to me, it's faster to use that when making steps with relatively high chaos, like for a trance song, than to do it in Notepad. But, to each their own.

Are there any tutorials that really break creating a stepfile down, step by step? I'm codingly challenged and just not getting how to create the steps to go with the beat.

I've synched all my songs just using guess and check for the offset. It's very easy to find the BPM with X-Step, but I wouldn't trust it for finding the gap. If it determines the gap just using one tap of an enter key while listening to the song in winamp, then that's where human error is a problem. I'm not good at finding offset like that because I don't know where the exact first beat starts. Is there a program that can find it for me?

Another problem I have with X-Step is that it gives you the BPM, but it might be a fraction off because it doesn't give you a decimal.
For example, let's say the actual BPM of a song is 300.333. X-Step would only show 300. Is there a program that can be a little more exact?

I have a ton of ipod songs... and I basically have all my music on itunes..... The only problem with me and making simfiles is that about 90% of my songs are mpeg4's.... Does anyone know how to convert those to mp3/orgg files so that I can use them in stepmania?

and also:

mp3 files are set to delay the song for one second... so When I put the song on stepmania, it delays it. Is there any program that will start the song on time and not delayed?

one more thing:

Can you give me a URL to the download?

Dude, you mustve posted this same message like 7 times.

Anyways, this thread is for simfile creation, not noteskin creation.
