the contacts for a softpad are mapped like this from the bottom, with the contacts on your left:

- start
- circle
- right
- square
- down
[] ground
- up
- triangle
- left
- x
- select

Very few people who have made an xbox pad are active on this forum. VERY FEW. I mean... there's like 10 of us total as it is, heh. My preliminary prediction is that you're going to have to forge the new ground and post the info to help the rest of us out in the future. I don't understand circuits enough to trace one myself honestly, but if I were you I'd certainly try. And after doing my best to trace it, I'd use a multimeter to test for ground (to make sure I traced ground right), and then perhaps use a wire to connect the various contacts to ground and see which button it registers, (to see how well I traced the circuit). Once you get it figured out, post pictures with the solder points labeled, and tell what kind of controller it is (Mad Catz for xbox only clearly). That's one of the best kinds to use for an xbox too, so xbox live registers it as a pad and not a controller (though you have a modde xbox and therefore probably won't be playing xbox live -- you're more about stepmania).

well, i will proably do that and forge the knew path and probably post some pics biggrin.gif but anyway i did buy a secound xbox for xbl so i could just make one of those xbox control boxes so it registers as a pad online. (if not i don't really need to play against a bunch of n00bs with soft pads) laugh.gif

Sounds good. If you're making control boxes, keep that in mind then: you have to make this current one a control box too.

Heh, I doubt that would happen, typically online games are dominated by the good players. BUT what would be really cool, would be if they developed a system similar to Halo 2, etc., where there was an ongoing tournament, and you were ranked against all the Live DDR players. Those in the top ten could even have a tougher challenge that in order to move up you have to beat the person in front of you head on in versus with completely random modifiers. Talk about the ultimate DDRs. Now they just need In the Groove and Pump It Up versions for the consoles...

Tommorrow I'll begin making my list of materials and start buying what I need. The marathon begins!

AMEN on the Halo/DDR ranking system

but, the i was joking about the n00b part... even though a lot of ppl play with controllers on that game. online. but i probably won't play it online because what is the point if you play against someone with a softpad or a controller... it is kind of a unfair advantage plus, like you said stepmaniax better suites me

o and good luck with the marathon. Finish strongly

the mappings for softpads should be the same wether theyre xbox or ps2. if you're talking about the mapping for a regular controller, though, i would need a picture.

hey guys,

so i finally finished my pads, with lights and all. there are some pictures
here, here and here.

you may wonder why there's a hole in the centre panel. well, long story... i decided to try my drill and see if i could make a big hole, and i did... but i didn't notice i was using an actual piece... so i covered that up with a plexiglass circle and decided to add some lights underneath.

i will be posting a how-to add lights. notice that these are not the ones that you guys were taking about (i'm anxiously waiting for someone to come up with an easy idea!). these ones are plugged to your computer and flash to the beat of the music.

take care and happy ddring,

latindude

duct tape is best. works on EVERYTHING!!!!! oh and try not to get the cheap plywood that like chips everywhere....but nothing extremely hard either. that makes it really heavy and stuff.

Ok, just look in the Plywood section then i guess? tongue.gif

Does it matter if i go to Lowe's or Home Depot?

Doesn't matter which place you go to, but regardless of the store, ask one of the sale associates if they have any scrap plywood that they'd sell you. There's really no need to buy a full 4' X 8' sheet if all you need is less than 3' X 3'. For my home built pad, I picked up a real nice piece of 3/4" plywood for $4 at Lowes. It's a great way to save some money.

Ok, i'll have to go have a look this weekend. Will the Plywood be slippery at all by default? I want to make sure it doesn't move at all. I'm playing on a hardwood floor.

The weight of the pad will keep it in place pretty well, but you'll probaby want to pick up some rubberized, non-slip material. I've seen it at lowes in the flooring department. It's mainly used under area rugs, but if you glued it to the bottom of your pad, that should keep it from slipping and should also protect your hardwood floor.

Wow, I've been out of town for a week, I come back, and don't have a clue what we are even talking about on here anymore...... I'll catch up later. Whoever built the white pad with NINE BUTTONS.... very cool. Looks good. Same for the one with the lights it.

Anyone who posted questions on my site... They've been answered.

For the hand-full of people who are asking me about pad 3.0.... It works great. I don't use the aluminum screen anymore. I switched to the metal tape. Very simple and works great. Doesn't tear or really even show any signs of wear.

For everyone who has asked about the $30 3/4" Birch Plywood.... It doesn't exist anymore. It was a one time buy for the HOME DEPOT CHAIN they don't have it anymore (at my local HD) and they don't think they will get it again. It has been replaced by the $44 variety. Could have went either way, GLAD IT WORKED OUT FOR THEM E1.gif

C'ya

not only will the rubberized material keep your pad from slipping, it might also keep the pad from scratching the wood floor you play on.

Okay, first, if something has been quoted a million times, just refer to it, we'll know what you're talking about... these nested quotes take up sooo much room after a while.

Nice pad, the hole in the center actually looks purposeful and as if its there for style, nice improvisation! I know someone else has mentioned the lights that beat with the music (don't remember where it's at but I've read it), but I applaud you! Its a very nice twist that very few people have. I thought about doing lights like that around the outside of my pad, but decided it'd take too much power and would just give people seizures if I had the game going (which has bright colors) the arrows lighting up when I step on them, and various lights going to various frequencies in the music. Too much color, hehe. I'm assuming you split the line coming out of the audio out from your computer and utilized that siginal. My dad used to make "beat boxes" with the same principle all the time when he was a kid, so I'm sure he could explain it befter to me. Nice job. I want to hand it to you for the arrow graphics too. Not sure if you made those or found them on the internet, but they look nice either way, so does the color scheme of blue and black. A black border or just painting the edges black would spruce it up some too.

Alright, I hope people liked the arrow graphics at least a little, heh. I'm going to split to go start buying materials! Alright!

hi grgisme,

thank you for your comments.

the lights actually blink when you should step on either arrow. this is done using stepmania and a circuit that i explain here. they do get quite annoying after a while, specially if it's a fast-paced song with a bunch of jumps. i call it the crotch light.

i made the arrow graphics using a blue matrix design as well as a template i found somewhere (i'll try to find that link). they were too small, so i added the blue border around them.

as for painting the border, i will do that as soon as it's not -40 out there. i tried painting them inside and that wasn't a good idea...

Very nice. Your tutorial was definitely the one I'd seen before. Pictures would certainly aid in understanding, but I'm not electrically savvy either. I will be by the time I'm done with my project though, that's for sure.

I think I'll be making my own arrow graphics for my pad as well, haven't seen any that I like enough yet. Still deciding on what kind of look I'm going for, I liked the blue and black, but odds are I'll stick with sheet metal squares.

In case anyone is wondering, I'm definitely ripping off Riptide's design. Because mine will have lights in it, DDR Homepad's isn't going to work. (Yes I just sat down and studied the differences long enough and found that out TODAY, heh.)

EDIT: Answered my own question.

I've spent the last hour drawing out the design of my pad in Flash MX. I drew each layer of the design so I can change things as I desire. I stuck in the "3in" graphics I made, with 2in. corner brackets (everything is exactly to scale), so check out what those graphics would look like:

http://www.geocities.com/grgisme2001/DDRPad.jpg

Pretty suite eh? I think that would look quite nice.

Alright, I'm going to scram, I'll work more later.

anything would work as rubberized material. mouse pads, the stuff under rugs, etc. I think the mouse pad would work best for you though since it would just entirely elevate the pad from the floor and make it pretty much impossible for the pad to scrath the wood floor. Mouse pads can be found at any store dealing with computers like staples, office max, best buy, circuit city, maybe even k mart!

i still think the stuff under rugs would work best. you can get it in smaller rolls, like for lining shelves, at home depot. you can staple a big roll of it to the bottom, and it would be easier to do than mousepads.

Ok thanks, i'm going to buy all that crap this weekend. I might try and get some pics up to see if i did it right or not, it's going to look a bit ugly is my guess.

This is the kind of tape i have : http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=740011
...i hope it won't be too slippery.
