I was wondering if people don't play Doubles as much because its more expensive to play in the arcade (and at home)? Any good reason for this? I find it funner than singles, but its too costly for me to play regularly and often, limiting my practice.

Exactly. Only a tiny percentage of arcades have Joint Premium enabled.

And, at home, it's almost impossible to play doubles without metal pads, and buying two can be costly.

Still, it's fun, but you can't play if you can't pay.

I would totally get into doubles, but yeah. The money. I've tried it once, it was a lot of fun, and it would be awesome to get really good, but eh. I think I'll AAA every song and AAAA every oni course on singles, and then I might get into doubles. Or if I find a joint premium machine, I could do that...

Doubles is very popular at my arcade even though we don't have join premium. We DO have happy hour however (8 tokens for the buck; 2 tokens per credit). It's really fun except little kids try to climb on the pad more often when only one person is playing.

Perhaps another reason why you don't see doubles as much is because it's much harder (for me, at least) to find a good keyboard/hand controller setup to practice with on Emulator/Console games. Those mental reps are essential.

Also, for those of you who just hate seeing your lifebar completely drained (like on Pump It Up...heh), it's much harder to regain your footing after a slip-up on doubles than singles when you have a stream of arrows flying at you, so perhaps people (yes, i'm talking about me) are not nearly as comfortable with taking risks with doubles as they are with singles.

In addition, high traffic DDR areas may not have all 32 floor sensors working (4 on each button X 4 buttons X 2 pads). I'm sure there are many out there who know which side is the "good" side on their respective arcade machines.

However I don't want to leave my post with giving everyone a bad taste for doubles.

And that being said (and with the overall underlying theme of PLAY MORE DOUBLES going on) the solution is probably two fold. The most immediately implementable point is to simply be more confident. Confidence to decide to spend the money at the arcade. Confidence to take calculated risks at songs to better your DDR skillz.

The second point (which has already been stated) is to have more money. Go get a part time job. Ask for a raise. Marry rich. That sort of thing, so that you can have the resources to spend on the Cobalt Flux Doubles Pack and practice on training mode at home after your hours of vigorous stepchart study.

Also, if the pads don't respond well at your arcade, make a tactful fuss about it. Talk to the owners, managers, assistant managers, and technicians about how essential DDR pad sensitivity is to your satisfaction at their establishment. It really isn't that hard to order and install replacement floor buttons and sensors. All you really need to do is convince the owners/whoever's in charge of the money to shell out the cash.

And finally, I will end by agreeing with Behemoth on the point that doubles is definitely "funner than singles" whether it be Perfect Attack or Free Styling. Everyone should give it a try.

Peace.

I just duct tape 2 cheap soft foam pads together, haven’t had problems yet.

On a side not, Pump It Up has freestyle mode, I’m lucky to have a arcade near where I live.

I used to play double on two soft pads I nailed to a board at home and that had me going for months, but the transition from home doubles to arcade doubles was much rougher than home singles to arcade singles.

Plus the double cost is rather discouraging.

Maybe if the arcade had a joint premium day or something I could get into it, but I'm not going to pay $2.50 to look and feel like an idiot while I adjust.

Bingo!
Remember how awkward DDR felt at first? You can experience those feelings all over again if you try to learn doubles. It's like having to learn all over again, and personally, I'm content not to have to revisit those days.

My theory is that doubles would be a lot more popular if there was an option to enable singles and doubles for 1 credit, and versus for two. But alas that does not exist.

[/genius!]

Well, I guess I know what Konami should do if they decide to make a new DDR version for the arcades...
Or the hackers. Whoever's smarter.

for me its the price
if it was cheaper i'd be all over doubles like white on rice
its so much more fun than singles cause it opens up a whole new world of cross overs and patterns

I agree whole heartedly. I'm still on Light on Doubles Mode, but one of my very first doubles songs I played was AM-3P, and those steps were the funnest since I learned how to Heavy Holic on singles for the first time (like 6 months ago). And yea I think another reason why doubles isnt as popular on top of it being too expensive is 8 panels is harder to hit than 4 panels. More leg movement and the crossovers are harder to perform than on singles.

hmm...here in Nor Cal there isn't really a popularity issue with doubles mode here in the arcades...where I play there's only like 2 other doubles players besides me that play doubles...I guess doubles isn't really popular in Nor Cal...

well for me, it really just depend's. on what you say? idk. i can do a few nine-s and have made it to the last Max 300 hell run(yes the big 6-1/2 measure one). but when i feel embarassed(why should i?) i'll just go and tear it up on singles for a few rounds then return to doubles

I play doubles whenever the price is okay. If it's 1.50 for Five songs, that still sucks, but I'll give it a whirl. 1.00 for three, sure, why not?

you mean double, doubles= tennis.

anyway. we have a card system at my arcade, think dave and busters.
and when you accumulate $500 on the card you upgrade to a "Gold card"
and with this everyday the first game you swipe your card on is free, so we can play double for 1$ dollar if we want.
