I've been thinking about this for some time now. A sport is something competetive(sp) and usually athletic. So is DDR a sport? I think it is because of tournements and so on. Do you guys have any thoughts about this.
Word to Mods: I'm pretty sure a topic like this would have been done before, but the search is acting up so I don't know. |

It has, plenty of times.
It's not a sport unless you live in Norway. _________________

just because theres tournaments for it, doesn't necessarily(sp) mean that its a sport. Example: our local game store has tournaments all the time for halo, madden, and tony hawk games, but that doesn't make them a sport.
But anyways, heres my take on this. DDR is not really a sport, because it is, in reality, just a video game. If it was a sport, it wouldn't take very long for competitions, since the songs are only about 1 1/2 minutes long. _________________

I'm guessing you've never been to a well attended tournament. _________________

To me ddr is more than a sport it becomes part of your life once you start playing you cant get away just like basketball and football those people get paid for what they do. if i got paid to play ddr it wouldnt be for the money it would be because the love of the game just like it is right now. |

First of all, DDR is a sport in Norway, no where else. I think it should be a sport, if poker is a sport, then DDR definatly should be a sport. |

My $.02...
Is DDR a sport? Yes.
Should DDR be an Olympic sport (because that question always comes up somehow)? No.
Is DDR deserving of product-endorsing celebrities, ready to sell out to a fat paycheck? No.
I think DDR is a sport, but not much beyond that. _________________

I'm pretty sure it can't be, either, because it's not supposed to exist in America. The start up screen says "For sale in Japan only," so that kinda makes it illegal, but you see how well that is policed. |

Is DDR a sport to me?
Yes.
If it gets me to sweat all over the place, then yes. It has a goal in mind (get all those damn arrows) and it can be played in teams.

i don't think a video game should be considered a sport. athletic? yes. sport? no. except in norway, but i don't like the norweigens (sp?). think about it: all you do is watch arrows and hit them with your feet as accurately as possible. it's not that complicated. sure, you could compare ddr to other rule-free sports, like skateboarding and snowboarding, but you don't need electricity to skateboard or snowboard. it could help, but it's not really necessary.

not true. try saying that in a couple of years. it tapers off relitavely fast compared to sports. another thing, in the long run, you could make a lot of money playing sports--with ddr, you lose money, unless you enter a tourney, but if you're good enough to win a tourney, chances are you spent more than you won playing ddr. yes, bouncer-person, i read you whole post. money doesn't matter compared to the love of the blah blah blah and so on. that's a sign of addiction. good luck

DDR is a sport.
1. Stepmania gives you a way of playing DDR for free. Konami no longer controls the distribution of the core concept of DDR. Also multiple companies make their own dance pads so Konami doesn't own dance pads either.
2. Even though very few, there are DDR players who have been playing since it's introduction and they still strive to do better. Once you have spent years playing DDR, studying the philosophies behind the drive to win, and observing competitive player archeatypes you will see that DDR has enough depth to meet all the criteria of being a sport.
3. The Japanese have a level of respect for the country's most accomplished players. They take pride in the fact that their country produces the world's most sophisticated video games, and the best players in the world live there. When we English speakers voice our opinions on message boards about wether or not DDR is a sport, we are really just sharing ignorance because Japan has much more serious players. We just don't have the level of experience and character to really answer whether or not DDR is a sport. |

Many play it as a sport, and I think it can be a sport for those people, but you have to be somewhat dedicated to the game to play with that mentality. A regular sport requires competing with someone else in order to play the game. With DDR, that's just an option.
I think that's the major reason why people are skeptical in calling it a sport. |
