Making a theme requires knowledge of what metrics do and editing graphics.

I have been working on a theme for probally 6 hours total now. It's nothing special, I just want to get the feel of editing it.

The only metrics i changed was making the scroll wheel scroll vertically, instead of like a "wheel"

I want to change the "select difficulty" so that they are all flat across, instead of beginner lower, light higher, standard lower, etc

yeah, basically you need 3 programs:

StepMania, Photoshop (or another image editing program), and Notepad (or another text editing program)

You edit the images in Photoshop, change the metrics in Notepad, and view the finished product in SM.

It seems to me what would be appreciated, in lieu of an edit tool to create themes, is documentation about the graphics, and especially documentation about the metrics. I went to the StepMania site to look for this stuff, and found some info in their Readme.
http://www.stepmania.com/stepmania/wiki.php?pagename=Readme#Creating%20a%20Theme
However, in this same Readme, they state...

StepMania Readme wrote:
metrics.ini: A metric is simply values that can alter the appearance of the game. metrics.ini is a large list of values that will allow you to alter things like the position of elements in the menus, and the order of menu screens. There is no documentation or explaination of these values other than the value name.Because the theme "default" implements all possible theme elements and metrics, the metrics file "Themes\default\metrics.ini" contains a complete list of all possible metrics.

Well, that's kind of annoying. Even though the people at StepMania haven't provided any decent documentation, has anyone else perhaps made some documentation for the metrics? One of the major reasons metric names aren't sufficent to document a metric is the valid range of a metric is not given. Perhaps someone could start there?

It's stuff like this that makes the software engineer in me cry. It's also why open source isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I have been learning the metrics with A LOT of trial and error. I'm working on making my own theme, which is coming out pretty sweet for my first time E7.gif

I couldve done better, but I like it. The only part i dont like is the font i used and the Gameplay screen.
