Now, my question is:
Would soldering a wire to the ground wire on the usb cable be enough to stop my controller from frying?
I have an old ps2 mat laying around and I was thinking of getting that plastic sheet that comes in the middle with this grid of metal lines and stick it to the bottom of the plexiglass. Would that prevent it from getting an electrostatic discharge?

yeah you could prob. do that, but it woudnt do anything about the controller frying, and anyways you want to use better materials than what is in a softpad.

so, what causes the controller to fry? is there a way to avoid that?
i wouldn't like to be getting a new controller every week, cuz that would suck.

ebay, sometimes you can get two for under 20 with shipping included. and you could always sell the other pad

The "ground" on the controller has nothing to do with grounding the circuit board against electric shock...the ground is what transmits a signal once a button is pushed. The only way for you to literally "ground" a controller is if you were to add some sort of extension cable and plug it into the third prong on an electrical outlet. Don't ask me how, 'cause I don't know happy.gif;; but I've read of some guy doing it.

what you want to do is to make sure all your corner plates touch (they should, because of the brackets) and then screw or solder a wire into one of them. install a male electrical socket into the side of ur pad, or put a lil grounded extension cord oot the side so that you have access to the male end from the outside.

cut the female end off on the inside, and hook the ground (green) wire up to the wire you connected to the metal plate. **as a safety precaution, put wire nuts on the other two wires, so you dont accidentally put 110 volts through your sweaty, conductive body.**

make sure you plug the extendion cord into a grounded "gfci" outlet so you actually ground the pad and not pretend to ground it. a gfci outlet has those little test/reset buttons on it. get a plug tester to see if the socket is sufficiently grounded, but if you have a newer house, it should be.

this should protect your controller parts from dangerous static electricity buildup caused by moving plexiglass in you pad. thank you for purchasing a CH604 educational film! *cue awesome 50s educational film music* "doot, doodle-oot doot doo..."

P.S. thanks guys! your questions have made me a trick member!

The big black suare in the middle is where the ground an the other smaller black squares are the buttons. (I will post a image later)

Anyway Im almost done with my no bracket pad but i cant put photos cuz I cant find a damn image server that works!!!! All i have to do is put the plexiglass and add 3 more pushbuttons but i can still play on it E1.gif If you have a good image server that works please post it. Thanks

p.s., there is no way to ground your pad from static through the controller, because the playstation isnt grounded!

you should be able to, but im not sure that the usb cable would be able to handle the high mount of static, because of the thim wiring. the ground pin is the one all the way to the right side, looking at the connector from the end with the white plastic piece down.

or, you could ground to the case. wrap a wire around or tape a wire to your usb cable and screw the end into one of the screws on the back of your case. but if thats too troublesome, you can do it internally.

i personally wouldnt want all that extra static running through my computer, though.

Hi, do you think I can use a bow saw (file) to cut the metal sheets? Dont own an electric saw..

And can I use an ordinary wood saw to cut the wood?

bow saw well no, maybe you meant a hack saw??
http://n-abler.org/pictures/Hack%20Saw.jpg

if i were you id just go out and purchase a pair of wiss snips, they work awesome, and if you dont plan on having a wood border around the pad, they are essential, because they dont leave shapr edges.

time for another crude drawing. you basically pick anywhere on the metal part of the pad, and attach a wire to it. it looks nicer if you have a border on your pad, so you can hide it along the edge. then attach that wire to the ground wire of an extention cord (*cap the other two wires*) and plug it into a grounded outlet. ths should keep the static buildup down, and now you also have a power source for lights in the future.

unless you mean about this crude drawing. it shouws you how to attach the contact to your controller circuitry, which is really very simple, but people get confused and scared about how it works so they have to ask lots of questions. basically, there is one ground point that you attact one contact to, then the four d-buttons that you attach the other contacts to.

i hope one of these helps.

has anyone noticed that ive been answering most of the questions, but have not built a pad yet? i swear im going to make more videos.

haha, good job cartoonhero! thanx a lot for your help..
hmm... lights! that sounds like a good thing to do. i don't know if i'd be able to though, since i have very little room under my arrows. maybe a couple of bright led's would do it, but i'm running low on money, so that'd have to wait.
again, thanx a lot for your help.

just a precaution for you installing lights in your pad is pretty hard to do without some pretty deep wells or some extremely thin lights. Also you'll hafta install an alternate power source to power the lights cuz any light brighter than the LED lights in CG and RO pads will take up more power than the PS2 can provide for you. Anyway it would take a little thinking to figure out how to get the lights to turn on and off along with the stepping of the pad arrows. hopefully you'll have better luck than i have as you can probably tell from all these problems i'm showing you. riiight.gif; good luck!

Good evening everybody. I've been reading this thread for awhile now but this is my first post.

I am very interest in making my own pad and acquired a controller from a friend who has no use for it. I really don't know the brand but I have a picture of the inside. If somebody could point out the ground and solder points to me I would be ecstatic.

The picture is located at http://home.comcast.net/~jon237/control.JPG.

Also, for this controller is there an individual ground for each and every button or one ground for the entire controller? Because wiring a seperate ground for each button would be a pain.

Thanks!
