I started on a 1.0 machine, so even vivid wasn't an option at the time. I'm quite used to Flat arrows, and sometimes even normal vivid arrows get distracting. Solo arrows really distract me, and I won't play with someone that's going to use them, since they'll change the color of my arrows, too. Usually, I do better on Flat (at least on songs with lots of different colored arrows, such as So Deep).
EDIT: Oh, but I don't look down on anyone using them when not playing with me. I don't really see it as much bigger of a deal than not using Flat. _________________

Yes. Those who didn't have the option to use solo arrows will look down upon you. And people who had enough patience to avoid using solo arrows will look down upon those who do. It's competition, pure and simple. As long as you know what path you are taking you should most certainly continue on that road. If you use solo arrows (and/or speed mods) you won't learn how to play DDR the way it is meant to be played. You will always have taken a shortcut around what takes real effort to learn how to do. But if DDR is just another hobby and you want to experience challenging songs without putting in seamingly years of practice, go ahead and use solo arrows. However if challenging songs is your thing, I would recommend Pump It Up as it has more of a focus on challenging songs and less on PA. |

Could you please enlighten me (and the rest of us) of how this game was meant to be played? Was there some sort of pamphlet distributed that I didn't receive that explains this to me? If not, I get the impression that you are just some x1, no mods, no bar elitest who probably just needs to shut up. The fact that you suggest that people play a completely different game based solely on what mods they use, show just how invalid your opinion is.
Haha, x5 solo and bar on bag...this guy would probably kill me. Haha _________________

He'd kill me too. 1.5 on everything but Legend. 2 on Cartoon heros, and 5 on Bag. Then when I play doubles, I put EVERYTHING on 2. |

There were no such mods as speed mods and solo arrows in DDR 1st Mix, 2nd Mix, 3rd Mix, 4th Mix, and 5th Mix. That's the closest thing I can find to your "pamphlet". And yes playing DDR with solo arrows and speed mods is an entirely different game. When speed mods and/or solo arrows are used, you are not following the music you are following the arrows that match the music. If you play DDR without the usual modifiers you aren't really going by the arrows, you are listenting to the music and letting the arrows suggest where you move. It's a skill that many DDR players don't learn nowadays, and I don't blame them because it takes a lot of practice. |

But there are such things in the more recent versions. You lose.

The arrows don't always follow the music perfectly. In plenty songs, the arrows are only a close approximation of the rhythm in the song, or in some cases (like Lovin' You heavy), more of a counter rhythm, not present in the song at all.
I play with solo mode and sometimes speed mods, and I follow a combination of the arrows and the music. |

See, but I typically on Extreme, where such options are allowed. Should I not play oni mode (and its x1 holiness) because it wasn't featured in mixes prior to MAX2? What about extra stage? I, along with everybody else, play it on x1.5, reverse. Is this okay or should I just stare at the screen with a terrorized look on my face because Konami is forcing me to play with such blasted mods?
By the way, there were solo arrows in 4th mix solo and 4th mix home version...they were featured in solo mode. Dude, the name...what a coincidence! har har
To also answer the original question, it really shouldn't matter whether or not you use solo. Some players are more visual while others are more audial. This is no right or wrong between the two. There is no way to prove that one way or the other is the way the game was meant to be played. Solo is merely a preference. _________________

I don't use solo because you can't in tournaments. Doesn't bother me when someone else uses it. I'm only against the bar hehe. _________________

Yes, but isn't it interesting how they didn't start making DDR easier until the series was starting to wane in popularity? Funny how mods were about new challenges and then all of the sudden the series became all about ways to have DDR require less practice to tackle harder songs.

Good point, but I also forgot to say that they change color so you won't know exactly when the arrow should land on the stationary point. In solo mode, it's easier because you time yourself as soon as you can see the arrow come up from the bottom of the screen. Without solo arrows you must have full concentration to keep up. It's very difficult, but the rewards for learning how to do it are astonishing.

Should you not play oni mode and extra stage? I don't know, you tell me. What I really care about is how good you are as compared to me. But I do like your comfortable euphemism about how speed mods and solo arrows are about preference. Most people would agree that playing with speed mods and/or solo arrows is easier than without. Sure it's correct to say that it is preference, but it's more of a matter of choosing the easier way or the more challenging way.
And yes, I love DDR Solo. 6 panels is an interesting challenge.

By playing DDR you are automatically a competitor to me. Why would I not care? Many people are motivated to play DDR by it's competition. |

Solo makes the arrows ugly and that alone is my reasoning against it. |

Heh. I*ll put it simple- I play any song I want, any way I want, I payed for it, my money. lol. Actually the only mods I use would be occassionally 1.5 or Dark. I*ve never used solo, but I*ve seen some people use it on certain songs where they said that the arrows blended in with the background therefore making them hard to read. Idk. ::Shruggs:: |

A man once told me that he was looking down upon me because I liked to play in solo mode.
I once told a man to stop getting his panties in such a bunch, that I'm just having to have fun with the game, and I'll fuck up the arrows however I want to.
The lesson I learned was, do whatever you want to the game to have fun with it (within reason) and stop worrying about what other schmucks think. _________________

And what about those oh-so-mythical people who just play for the heck of it? Who just play for *GASP* fun? You know, that word that is strictly forbidden to be used in a DDR-related sentence?
I say let everyone have their own motivations as for the game, their mods, let's all play and be happy... although it sounds too good to ever become true... |
Play for fun all you want. Just recognize what you are doing. Instead of thinking of those who look down upon you as ignorant, just recognize that they took the time to master a harder challenge than you. You don't have to compete with these people, all you gotta do is know that the way you play is easier.
Also I play for fun too. You really feel good when you can conquer the challenges that very few others are willing to take on. |

Daniel: Solo is entirely about preference. You either want to see really bright arrows or you don't. Most people who don't play with solo simply don't like the bright arrows. One can see that playing with vivid arrows is easier for them. OMG, they are making the game easier...that's not fair...go play PIU.
Oh, would you mind posting some of your accomplishments since you're a competitor? That might be the only thing that could possibly justify some of your inane arguments. _________________

The majority - especially on here - wouldn't find me much competition, so if anyone wants to stroke their ego they can always claim they're better than me. Doesn't affect me in the least. If there's any competition for me, it's to set my own goals and try to pass them. I find it amusing at the notion that anyone might find me a worthy competitor; if competition is truly one's thing, find someone who's better at the game as a comparison for something to strive for.
I play for my own benefit, not what's socially accepted on this forum or anywhere else. _________________
