If you mean Orion 78, i've never heard of a tropical mix. The Ameuro mix is really slow, speed it up to at least 2X or 3X, and treat it like a paranoia. The other mix is pretty fast, and you need to realize that the steps are really weird. There are parts where it literally is gallops that look like 8th note runs, just hang with it |

A lot of people generally just skip over standard mode and jump right on heavy!
The songs that shadow listed for heavy are really good for practice!
Try one of em!
if you fail, try again

hehe, that's what i did. i was on standard for about 30 minutes, until i realized that it was way too easy and that i could probably do heavy and decided to never go back to light or standard. _________________

Sure, you all can say that I should just skip standard mode, however I still find 95% of the songs in that mode to be really hard. So, there is no chance I'll skip over it. _________________

Great post. Please post something of relevance.
Tondog--
I found going to heavy mode difficult when I started out. There is a pretty big transition from light to heavy. But, it does really depend on the song. Cutie Chaser -Morning Mix- from light to heavy isn't really noticable, while MaxX from light to heavy would be a HUGE gap. Generally, there are a good few/some that make a nice transition to heavy mode, and are not too difficult.
Oh..I might recommend trying some heavy songs. Maybe just to see how the beats are, how the arrows are placed and such. It might give you some incites on what to work on next.
Well, it's midnight and I'm pretty tired. I can't think of any other advice/things to say. But, I'll post back if anything comes to mind.

Argh.
I'm been dipping my toes into Standard over the past few months, and I can't get very high in it.
Maybe it's because I keep trying to pass So Deep. Silly silly me.
And now I have Extreme. Is it just me, or is the difficulty ramped up all across the board? I totally failed two of the Lights, and I haven't been on Light in ages. More eighth notes than you normally catch in Light.
My problem? CROSSOVERS, and GALLOPS. I just can't do them. And it's difficult to describe what particularly gives me hives - I can read them perfectly well, but I have no idea where to put my feet in order to get them right.
Especially stuff like this:
r-u-r
r-d-r
l-d-l
l-u-l
My feet get completely tangled trying to get in position for the next line....I know it's more of a full 360 turn to do stuff like that, but I'm afraid to turn from the screen.
HELP!
*sacrifices running shoes to the DDR gods*
(And you know, Extreme not having an option to slow the music in training mode is so not helping....!) |

Guh. That's what I'm doing. But I'm just not fast enough.
If someone could give me a good list of songs to practice spins on, too, I'd be much appreciative. |

Wait a second... what's with the "skip"? After the r-d-r, your right foot should be on the , so just keep it there and move your left foot onto the |

The arrow patterns as you show, should be just how it is. Right on right, left on up, right on right. Then right on right, left on down, right on right. Then left on left, right on down, left on left. Then finally, left on left, right on up, and left on left. As for those patterns, there should be enough time to move your feet/slide over and continue with them, as they are not streaming together.
Crossovers should not be expected to be mastered in one day, let alone a few weeks. It takes a lot of practice, or at least from my experience. To get really good at it, it'll just take some time. So don't fret too much. Just keep on trying .
Gallops can be a bit hard, especially when you are on 1x, and don't know which arrow to hit first. I'd recommend 1.5 or 2 (which ever you prefer) to be able to read them. However, if you are trying to stick w/1x for oni or just like reading @ 1x, then go to 1.5, and then go back to 1x when you are comfortable with the gallops. That's the only advice I can give you on that since you said you could read them just fine.
So Deep on Standard isn't that hard...I don't think so. Well, unless you aren't used to reading freeze arrows, and the 1/8 notes. Actuallly, for extreme, I feel it has a nice blend of challenging songs and easy ones which is quit nice . But that's heavy mode I'm speaking of :/. So, I don't know about light mode..
I hope that helps

My response to anyone who says people should skip Standard: if you're skipping Standard, maybe you stayed on Light for too long. If I'd tried to skip standard, I'd have gotten bored and frustrated with DDR, because for many months, the onlysongs that would give me a challenge on Light would be the Trip Machines/Paranoias/Maxes, which I don't like musically enough to want to play much, and I'd be failing every Heavy except for the few 5 foot ones. I'm just moving up to Heavy now.
I do think a lot of people think they have to stay on Light until they're good at most/all of the songs there. That is highly silly. If you're passing 3-foot songs on Light, try the few on Standard. They might be a little trickier in spots (more 1/8ths, more weird jumps). If you're passing 4-foot songs, congratulations, you're moving up to Standard a lot of the time. If you're passing 5s, you should be on Standard basically all of the time, except for songs that have a lot of whatever your weakness is (the groove radar is your friend if you're on a mix that has it).
(Note: I play mostly on softpads at home -- my arcade skills are about a foot behind my home skills, more because I have trouble hitting the recessed arcade arrows properly than because of the perfect window. So I never worry about failing songs and losing money, since I'm playing at home.) |

That's my problem, i've been stuck on light difficulty. I can't hardly do anything on Standard, besides the low BPM songs, and i somehow once triple A'd have you never been mellow MM groovin mix.
But i'm having trouble getting into standard mode, my legs just can't move fast enough. I think for a lot of the stuff i'm using the wrong feet on the wrong steps, how am i supposed to know which feet to use? Plus in Standard mode the arrows don't follow to the beat most of the time so that also makes it hard. Can anyone give me some advice on how to improve? Besides "keep practicing"? =P. Is there guides anywhere that tell you which foot to use to hit which arrows? |

It would probably help to practice with the assist click on if you're having trouble hearing how the steps fit the music.

Unless the song has some difficult footwork (eg Afronova Heavy) I don't think you're going to find any guides like that. Have you tried looking at a stepchart and mapping it out? Generally speaking, you always want to alternate feet. Sometimes that's just not possible, unless you want to end up with your back to the screen. If you're still stuck, post a specific song or run that's giving you trouble. |

First, don't move your feet back to the center. Try to alternate feet. And, if you can, either at an arcade or with a friend who's better than you at home, watch them do a song that you don't "get" the rhythm for. (I'd bet that, at an arcade, if you're there alone, you could probably get a good player to demo a standard song for you, especially if you offered to pay for their game.) That's totally how I figured out all sorts of things, and, IMHO, even better than slowing it down or putting on the claps in Training mode.
Also: pick some songs with steps that are hard for you that you really like, musically, and that you can get a lot of perfects on in Light, so that you know you've got the basic beat down. If you're having trouble both reading and stepping, maybe playing with the controller would help, so that you can concentrate on one or the other. |

Thanks, i'll try those. Is there any assist click feature in Stepmania? What exactly do you mean when you say alternate feet?
Any specific songs that are good for training in Standard mode? |
