I downloaded the Mac OSX version of Stepmania. I installed it. Everything seemed to be in order. But when I try to open the program, it says it is not compatible. What is wrong? |

What version of OSX are you using? Because I think it's only compatible with Jaguar and Panther. |

Maybe it's because you're trying to play video games on a Mac. _________________

F*ck you, my good sir. Do not diss macs. Or else I will get my special band of midgits to beat you with baseball bats. Windows is as buggy as hell and freezes way too much. Half of my friends who use windows have many viruses on their computer. What does that tell you about your precious operating system now?
Anyway. I do have Jaguar. I see no reason why it should not work. This damn laptop always gives me troubles. I need to upgrade my main computer. |

I've had Windows for years and I've never had it freeze and I take precautions to not get viruses. |

The idea that Macs run smoother than Windows is a myth. If your friends have viruses then they're too dumb to be using a computer in the first place. _________________

If you're running MacOSX 10.2, make sure you're at the most current version (10.2.8, if memory serves), Just run Software Update from the System Preferences panel (make sure your user account has administrator rights).
As far as I know, SM does not work under 10.0 or 10.1. If you're using either of those system revisions, you have my condolances. Upgrade at least to 10.2.8 - you'll see your Mac in a whole new light.
Also, the latest releases of StepMania for OSX have been a bit (understatement) buggy, so if you're having problems, try using 3.9 Alpha 14... that version I know is playable.
I've got it running on a Powerbook G3 (Bronze KB) 400Mhz with 192 MB RAM. I think a large bit of the problems I have are due to the slower hard drive speed, but I haven't tested it with a comparable desktop system. Regardless, mobile DDR is a blast.
If you run into more problems once you get Stepmania, be sure to post a bug report. I know they have about 2 or 3 OSX specific bugs on their SourceForge tracker thus far. Maybe if the devs see that people are actually using the OSX version and are submitting bugs, the later versions will be a bit more solid.
Cheers!

Options for Mac based *nix outside of OSX
* YellowDog Linux (Not bad, but install tends to be a bit weird in my experience)
* LinuxPPC (What kernel are they using now? Granted, you can recompile...)
* SuSE (See above)
* Open/Free BSD (Why not just use OSX at this point?)
Since OSX is built off of BSD, this is probably the reason Mac is getting a port at all. Just my $0.02 there. I'm also probably missing a few distros that are available for PPC processors, but you get my drift. Really though, if you want to have a Linux box, go nab or build a cheap PC... less expensive and there's a number of distros available for Intel/AMD processors compared to PPC based ones.
But look at me fanning the soon to be flame war...

I heard Linux is harder to use than Windows. This is by the author of Applegeeks.
Quote: | Okay, where to begin...
Let me start off by saying, Issue 126 was not meant to bash the general PC user community. I mention this before, but I'll mention it again...I don't have anything against PC computers. Hell, I have one in my room right now, and I use it to play games from time to time because I acknowledge that the PC has more games. However, I do have something against PC users with a peanut-sized brain. I like to call these individuals mindless pc wankers. I'm pretty sure these so-called pc wankers will send me hate mail right about now...
Couple issues back, Tim and I did a crossover comic. It was a friendly joke between us, it was nothing serious. We were just having some fun. You know, since we're both doing comics. Funny comics. Comics with the main purpose of making people laugh and giggle. But somewhere along the line, a huge (age- old) debate started across many forums, Mac vs PC. The same debate occurred in the #applegeeks channel as well.
Following the debate, the same stupid arguments kept on appearing....
1. Mac sucks because they don't have games
Bullshit. What do you call Unreal Tournament 2004, WarCraft, etc? This is what really bothers me. The main reason pc wankers cite as to why the whole Mac machine sucks is that there are such a low number of games. If you're a gamer, fine, use a PC and play games. But don't go around bashing other people because they're not a gamer and prefer using Macs. The problem as I see it is that these pc wankers dont acknowledge the fact that computers can be used for things other than gaming. Besides, Ananth tells me he watched Ian play the World of Warcraft Beta on Matts Mac laptop. Mac hardware is getting better, so I have no doubt we'll be seeing a lot more games for the Mac.
2. You can't upgrade Macs
Bullshit. I upgraded my G4s hard drive. I upgraded my memory to 1 gig of ram. I threw in two ATI video cards so I could have dual monitors. My next upgrade will be putting in a dual G4 1.3MHz processor. Before I even had a G4, I was using a Powermac 7500/100, which I upgraded to a G3. Those are all pretty standard upgrades, so its silly to claim that its any different on a PC than it is on a Mac.
3. Mac sucks because they use a one-button mouse
I'm use a 5-button optical USB mouse by Microsoft. Apple isnt forcing you to use a one-button mouse. If they were, then this 5-button mouse wouldnt be compatible with my OS, would it?
4. Mac crashes
What machine doesn't crash. Nobody said Macs were perfect. Comparing the new Macs, using OS X, to older Macs running OS 9, Macs with OS X are VERY stable!
A lot of people claim that Macs are for people who dont know anything about computers, but think that they look pretty. So pretty=bad? If thats the case, why do Mac themes for Windows exist? Why are people developing OS X themes for Windows XP? Why are people developing Windows applications that mimic OS X applications?
Like I said before, I have nothing against PC machines I /use/ PC machines. I just get irritated when I see some PC wanker talking trash without any real knowledge of the situation.
Why do I use a Mac? I see myself as a graphic artist. Yes, I know you can do the same graphics on a PC, but I feel more comfortable using applications on the Mac. It's a preference shared by many graphic designers I and many of my co- workers use Macs. Many of them also use PCs. More importantly, though, its a personal preference, which brings me to my next point: people want there to be an end-all judgement on which (PCs or Macs) is better. The truth of the matter is that its impossible to make that judgement. Theres pros and cons to each, and each person ought to individually weigh them and get the machine that they think will suit them best. |
He put it better than I ever could. So you f*cking windows fanboys should just shut the hell up already. ktnxbai :>
Thank you for everyone who actually HELPED. |

heh...I actually did hardware upgrades on my G4 CUBE, one of the least-upgradable machines they've built. I added RAM to get myself up to 896MB, and I upgraded the hard drive to a Maxtor 80GB to replace my failed IBM Deaths--er, Deskstar 30GB.
The only time I've ever had to re-OS a Mac from scratch was when the aforementioned IBM hard drive failed. By then the system was already 3 years old, and that type of drive had been known to fail after a while anyway. My XP-running best friend, on the other hand, is constantly Re-OS'ing her system, and yes she takes care to keep her system virus-free and spyware-free (she was a hardware/software tech before her job got outsourced). _________________

My dad upgraded my Powermac G4 many times. He put in an extra internal HD and more ram. If you cannot upgrade them, then why do they make extra add ons for them. Ignoring PC wankers. |

Mac sucks because of its counter-intuitive GUI and the over-emphasis of GUI, hell you can't even acess a terminal without going deep into the system storage directories =/, and THEN privileges is still limited
which is also part of window's problem
which furthers makes this post a shameless promotion for *nix |

PMed Phi. this has gone wildly off-topic. the thread isn't about how well Macs work, but about an SM error. go to random chat if you're going to have a rant about macs vs. pc. or better yet, just keep it to yourself. it's a damn machine. |
