Alright, go to www.buynshop.com for your usb adapter.
get the arrows made at staples or kinkos and get them 10 1/2 x 10 1/2 ( you want to do this be cause the arrows will be around 10 3/4ths wide because of the brackets, and that way you dont have to cut them)
Now with the rails, i didnt use the rails myself, but they give the wires in the pad more room to use http://www.angelfire.com/games5/shsbrando/ (i just put a piece of plywood under it and cut little slits for the wires to run to the pad)
As for the control box go to http://www.rufus3.com/ddr/pad/box/
this is a nice way to keep all the buttons and everything organized (plus its just like the arcade) not very hard to do, takes maybe like 3-4 hours |

That control box is a little pricey for something that is just an alternative to a controller...
So how much will this cost me then (the DDR Home pad)?
http://www.buynshop.com/productinfo/45/VG-PS-PS2PC4/
Is this too good to be true?
Edit: One of my more important questions, , with a controller plugged into the PC, can you still use the keyboard?
And finally, anything else I can use from my Soft Pad? |

Is there any cheaper ones?
Like Have the arrows work really good but the rest of the pad crappy? |

I plan to use riptides design, but make it how Bluebeefman's (?) is, and use the flat corner braces instead, but I'm pretty stupid when it comes to wiring and things, so would I still put the wire wrapped around and soldered on every other screw? And then how would the wheather-stripping and the metal on the bottom of the plexiglass be? Thanks. |

That can acctually serve as more than just a replacent. It can acctually make your pad easier for transportation as it has a disconnection point. That way you don't wind up dragging your controller around when moving the pad. Also if you decided to build a new pad all you have to do is buy a new connection piece and you can use the same controller.

These pads are realtively inexpensive compared to what you would pay for a real metal pad. If yo ureally wanted to, cut your corners where ever you feel that you can. i.e. use cheaper or leftover wood, old wiring, currently owned screws...
These are also alot easier to maintain as I'm sure that many people on here can tell you. If you built it, its easier to know how to fix it.

My guess is yes, you would still follow the same wiring procedure as in that design. The flat panel braces are cosmetic on the top. _________________

OK i wanna make a pad but without the 5 non arrow squares, and without brackets. Also i want the arrows to be very sensitive.
Basically cut out all the non needed things to make an extremely good but ugly and cheap pad. I want it to be $100 CDN (about $75 USD) MAX.
Is this even possible? And also what design should i base my pad on, I was thinking riptides cause hes got videos and im a big n00b with making things. However i dont like riptides contact system, it seems too dificult to get it wired and working, are there any other ways to do it?
Also why are the arrows lucite? Lust for looks? would i be able to use wood instead? I just wanna make a cheap pad the preforms well instead of having to get a soft pad, i dont care how crappy. it looks, I can always change it latter |

Well, all that seems like your asking for a new design. There are some people who have made pads out of wood only. Try doing a search and see what you can come up with. n00b or not, I'm sure that you can get it done if you follow the instructions. _________________

Hey all. Just read through this entire thread (took forever!), and it looks great!
Ran the idea by my friend and we're interested in building some pads together. We each want a high quality doubles set and have some ideas for a detachable weighted trick bar but those are sitll in the planning stages Actually just thought of why they probably won't work ...
However, we want to start simple and work our way up, so we're starting with a solo pad. If I make another pad that I want to connect to that for doubles, would i just build another pad and somehow stick em together? Or would the process be different?
Of the three major sites listed in the FAQ, only Riptides and DDRHomePad's are up. Patster's is nowhere to be found - I was wondering if anyone had it mirrored anywhere.
Also, I found some other sites while browsing this thread about people's modifications to the designs or their own designs. Was wondering if anyone had these links, as I stupidly forgot to bookmark them
We'd like a true arcade feel for our pad, with lights if possible. Just wondering which design out there is best for these needs.
Thanks so much |

I'm making a pad without brackets that is very sensitive but it will not be ugly. go to didjivibes website and click on DPv2 _________________

mgcloud: good luck with the doubles pads... if i had more time this summer, i would have em right now (only made one of two) ... I didn't bother with anything for attaching them together because I got some steel for the corner squares from my boss, and well, each square is about 10 lbs, so the pad, with everything is around 60lbs... hasnt moved on me yet.
if you are gonna be looking for something to connect em with, look into those clips that close things like lunchboxes (same design, just look for something bigger)... i did some testing with those, and one at the top, one at the bottom would make it work pretty good, though i havent tested with people jumping around on em ) _________________

1) I made a Cbox because it looks alot better then a controller comming out and its easier to transport being two peices so when I put my 35lb pad in my truck there isnt a cord dangling to get cought. Its a convience not a must. Another reason I made a cbox is because I play on xbox live and if you use a regular ps2->xbox adapter on my cobalt flux cbox it shows up as a controller not a pad.
2)ddr homepad cost me about $130USD WITHOUT my cbox, I have some left over materials also, It would probably cost me about $80USD to build a second one.
3)the adapter looks legit to me, not sure though never bought one i use xbox interface.
4)yes you can still use the keyboard
5)As far as i know the only thing usefull from a soft pad is the controll board if you wanna make a cbox, and you can cut the arrows out and and use the pictures if you dont want to spend the money to have them printed. |

Can I solder to a xbox controller and if so, can someone post a guide or something to help me out. If you can't solder to the xbox controller, then can someone post a link to a PS2 to Xbox adapter. I haven't been able to find one.
I am so close to being done. I just have to cut the acrylic and solder. Does anyone have any advice on what to use to cut the acrylic. I am thinking maybe a boxcutter, and if that doesn't work then I have a circular saw. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Of course you can solder to an Xbox controller. Use the same principal that you would for a PS controller. When you open the control board just map out which buttons go where, figure out which buttons do what and use those to do your wiring.
As for cutting your acrylic, you can buy a fairly inexpensive tool that creates a good clean cut. Its a plastic cutting knife and can be found in and around the same area you would find acrylic in Home Depot or Lowes. A circular saw is going to leave you with jagged edges. If you wanna use a dremel tool with a circular edged cutter that would work better. |
actually a circular saw is the best tool to use if you use the right blade. I payed $8 for the plastic/laminant cutting blade for my circular saw. I too was worried about chipping and cracking the lucite when I was cutting it. With the right blade it cut like a hot knife through butter I couldnt have been happier. For the hell of I it wanted to see what my wood blade would do to a peice of scrap lucit I had left over and needless to say Im very lucky I was wearing saftey glasses. So yeah get the RIGHT blade. |

I still need a guide because I opened it up and it had a lot of soldering points. So if anyone could supply a guide, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks |

Thanks! I guess I hadn't considered the huge weight of these pads
One other thing I'm worried about though are the dimensions of the pads. The gap between the right arrow on Pad 1 and the left arrow on Pad 2 should be arcade-accurate - do you know if ddrhomepad/riptide's designs allow for just a simple build of two pads being setup right next to each other matching these dimensions?
Also, links to other designs would be appreciated ^^ Any particular design recommended for sensitivity and durability with lights?
Thanks again |

Well, provide a picture of the board and I'll try to give you one. Try to make it a good one too, so if I blow it up I won't lose too much resolution. _________________
