Free versus regulation makes a HUGE difference in the calorie count. In free, it'll count every step you take as burning cals, in regulation it only counts it as burning calories if you were supposed to take that step. You wouldn't THINK it would make a huge difference, but between weight-shifting registering as steps, ghost steps, and sensors being slightly offcenter and so triggering more easily, there's potential for variation.
Also, it lets you program your weight in-- if you weigh 40 kg you're gonna burn a lot less than in you weigh 70kg...
(then there's the whole issue as to whether that's the calories you're burning including your basal metabolism during that time period, or on top of that. but i'm not real sure which the DDR counter is claiming to be counting.)
if i remember right, on the ddrmax2 workout mode, each step is approximately 1/30 calorie, with jumps being more, and other details to it. of course your mileage may vary-- depending on the weight it's set to (i think i left mine at default). i remember thinking that the number i got from max2 seemed BIZARRELY high compared to the ones i used to get from konamix back in the day...
i'm stunned you can get 100 calories on any song... i used to play workout mode in konamix, and era would always give me around 20 cals... granted era is 8 feet and drop out is 9 with lotsa jumps, but still... _________________

A pound of body fat does = 3500 cals. A person with a normal amount of activity (40 minutes of excercise a week) will burn the average number of calories for his weight. For 200lbs at 6ft, its about 3000 per 24 hours for just eating, sleeping, and sitting. Add to it normal daily activities such as walking, working, talking, standing, etc. the calorie burn increases, usually to about 3500-3700.
Now this is where cardio (DDR) comes into play. DDR on heavy is about the same as 12" step aerobics. This excercise burns an average of 800 cals per hour for a 200lb person. A side effect of playing more than 2 solid hours of it per week is increased metabolism (assuming you were of the normal metabolism before you started).
I've been losing weight since January of this year. I started at about 254lbs and am now 188lbs. I'm 6ft tall, so these totals are very familiar to me since I've used them for calorie burn calculations. To lose weight, I simply reduced the amount of food I ate. I still eat the same bad stuff (burgers, pizza, sweets, etc.). But I simply ensure that I have one serving of it per meal, or however much I can have in a meal, while staying under 2400 cals per day. But on days when I go out with friends for parties and such, I'll go all out and eat whatever. So averaging it all out, I consume about 2800 cals per day.
Now for the fun part. Weight loss is extremely simple and easy to understand. Here is the equation:
Calories consumed - Calories burned = Calorie balance
If the balance is positive, you gain weight, if its negative, you lose weight. Its that simple. It's not physically possible to gain weight if you have a negative balance, except for water weight, and that doesn't count.
Now to go back to my experience: I burned an average of about 3800 cals a day, and consumed an average of 2800. That is a 1000 negative balance, so:
1000 * 7 days a week = 7000 lost which is 2lbs a week
The beginning of May, I weighed 210 lbs. Lets see how this works.
4.5 weeks in a month * 2lbs per week * 5 months = 45lbs
I started at 254lbs - 45 = 209lbs
Pretty close eh? Now, here is where the DDR comes into the picture. I started playing DDR May 10th. I knew about it for a long time, but didnt play because I thought it was silly. Well I got over it, tried it and loved it . So starting from then, it took me until June 15th or so before I could start playing heavy. So then my weight loss becomes:
20lbs I've lost since June 15th / (4.5 * 2 months) = 2.2lbs per week.
That might not seem like much extra, but keep in mind, that 2lbs of fat is the maximum amount your body will burn without having negative effects (energy loss, muscle loss, organ damage, etc.). A side note about that is that during this time I took about a 2 week vacation where I may have gained a couple pounds, because of all the great food haha.
Here is a good site to calculate what you burn in a day:
http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.html
Weight loss is pretty easy, the only thing that you have to remember is that no one trick will solve your problem, and that it takes time. DDR is good, but simply put, you can still play DDR and gain weight by eating 3 Big Macs a meal. The biggest part of weight loss has to do with the amount of calories you take in.
