We are DDRFreaks. How might we(DDRFreak members) assist in anyway to get sponsors to host your videos and all similar things?

I don't understand the question. Can you describe what you want to do in more detail?

I believe bacon told me that when he hosted some of the videos for a short time, he ended up with around 1 terabyte of transfer in one week.

...that's 1,000 gigs of files going through one website.

Basically, it requires about $400/mo for the type of hosting, or 10 mbps unmetered bandwidth. Once we have that, we get the videos back online.

Keep in mind that I didn't even advertise those videos. I just changed the links and BOOM it happened.

I really do think that BitTorrent is going to be our solution... only problem is, we're going to have the added crap of people complaining about a lack of seeding.

I know I'm not in a position anymore to be expending huge amounts of bandwidth from my computer, I could seed a set or two maybe, but that's it.

Do any of you members out there have any ideas?

The only thing resting in my mind is:
Someone I know has a BitTorrent server, he hosts all the torrents, and then he seeds them all too if there's not enough peers.

It's something like... if there's not enough seeds, then the server acts as a seeder with a capped upload rate.

JDogg, do you have any headroom for something similar?

I'll admit that 1TB of transfer a week is a lot. There are ways though.

VxJasonxV had a decent idea to use Bit Torrent to host the videos. Thing is, even though there is a large number of users who would get the videos, how many would help to seed? Not many. Plus, there is the issue with the people who don't know how to open the ports which Bit Torrent needs to run at a faster rate.

I was going to use Bit Torrent for something, but decided to forget that idea. A large number of people have not had good experiences with Bit Torrent.

The best way to go is to have a dedicated server for the videos. It may be costly, but it will work.

Like I said, $400/mo.

Anyway, I don't want to use BT because most people don't know how to use it, and I would have to put entire tournaments in a torrent in order to make it worth it, and it prevents people from downloading individual videos.

J Dogg, I'm assuming that most of the users have broadband internet. You have a total of 242 videos under your videos section. You once told me that each video was between 5-10MB. I'll just assume that the total size of all of the videos is about 1.8GB.

You can split total number of videos in half and zip them into packages, so there would be two packages each with 121 videos. Each package will be around 900MB in size. People with broadband internet can tolerate the time it takes to download a file that large. They might not want all of the videos, but they will get all of the ones they want.

I have a way of hosting the videos. I can make the two packages and put each package on 10 to 15 mirrors. That's a total of 20 to 30 mirrors for 1.8GB of video. The reason for so many mirrors is due to the fact that the servers will become very busy due to the high amount of traffic going through them. If you want this to be successful the high number of mirrors is necessary.

This type of hosting is only able to occur for a period of about six days though. So if this interests you, you would need to announce this a week or two before the hosting would go up. This will allow a greater number of people to become aware of what is happening.

Even though the hosting is only for a very brief period of time, it would allow most people who have been wanting the videos to go back online to download them.

You interested in this?

What happens after 6 days? Game over? Doesn't sound like a permanent solution to me.

Heh... Yea. It's not permanent. I don't see any solution which would be permanent except Bit Torrent and traditional P2P networks. You could give Bit Torrent a shot. Bacon, the guy who used to host your videos, has a Bit Torrent tracker which is actually very fast. He told me he was going to talk to you about hosting all of the videos with Bit Torrent, but I don't think he's done that yet.

Best bet is to build another server just for the media and drop it off at a datacenter. The price doesn't have to be $400 a month. I know there are cheaper solutions out there. A long time ago you had the idea to charge a small amount for access to the videos. You could make a poll on the main page asking if people would pay for access to the videos. It might work.

Trust me, $400 is a great deal for 10 mbps unmetered bandwidth at a colo facility. I can ask about charging for videos in the polls.

Is that all? Have you considered a donation link on the front page? I'm pretty sure you'd make it, and if you didn't, custom titles for contributors of over $10 would be good fundraising.
