to be honest, i didnt read all 34 pages. i read the first couple and let me say this:

miss toy, excellent job on summarization.

however, i see people saying things like "watch other dancers, use their moves" etc.

how can you be ORIGINAL if you use other peoples moves? on the pad or off? how is taking a broken leg shootdown from wiggles and putting on a ddr pad any different from taking a move or routine you saw a ddr player do and imitating it in the next tournament?

im a dancer, i do mostly funk styles and liquid, and let me tell everyone right now that taking a "move" from a dancer and putting it into ddr ISNT DANCING, its biting. and its disrespectful to say the least.

and about miss toy's comment about "how many times do you see someone do a handslap or knee plant on a dancefloor" (or something along those lines), i see it quite often--its called LOCKING, and its one of the most respected dance styles world wide. everyone thats seen lots of the vids of west coast ddr freestylers have probably seen a lot of locking moves incorporated. i know for a fact that Lil B incorporates locking, whether he knows it or not.

as far as my tips go for freestyling, i try to do things ON THE PAD that normally people in the audience wouldnt be able to do OFF THE PAD. when you watch someone do a bar hop you're probably thinking "...whats so special about that? even i could do that" (or insert any ordinary freestyle "move" to replace "bar hop", you get the point). when you see someone do a backflip you think "wow, (s)he just did that ON DDR, i cant even do that on a trampoline for X's sake!" or something to that effect.

im not saying go try extraordinary moves like backflips on ddr, but do things that mean something and that are special to you. things that you know other people cant do. i met a guy once on the dance floor that could dislocate his shoulders and elbows and make boxes and do liquid very well behind his back. i was IMPRESSED. i know for a fact that i cant do what he can because i cant dislocate my elbows and when i DO dislocate my shoulders i dont have enough control to really do anything with it. but after talking to him about it he said he had never realised that anyone would be so impressed with it, he thought it didnt look good at all, but i definately think otherwise.

I am too lazy to pick out specific quotes. But first, you have to realize most ddr players are not exactly proficient dancers. And besides, biting is a hard thing to define. Whole sets? That's biting. Single moves? Well...that gets complicated.

And when Miss Toy said that about handslaps and kneeplants...it was quite clear to me what she was talking about. The handslaps she's talking about are no different than me striking keys on this keyboard right now. And those kneedrops...ditto. Those kneedrops look as though they're kneeling when they hit the ground. And I've never seen a locker slap the ground like Donkey Kong.

As I've said many times before in this thread, that a flashy move is a good thing, but it shouldn't be everything. The most important thing about freestyle is - STYLE. You need to make it look like actual dancing like it's cool. One of the best ways to do this is to get a style going, I have kind of a skip style where I do a lot slides and skips while dancing, almost like a crazier version of the c-walk but I hate when people c-walk on the pad it's so over done. But back to the point- get a good dancing style that's comfortable to you. Try even looking at yourself in the mirror while pretending to dance on a ddr pad and ask yourself, "Could I do this in a club and not look/feel like a total a**?" If you can you have your style. The next thing to do is add some moves, a hand plant is cool if done at the right time like for instance a good base beat in a song where it stops for a second and you can pause or if you mix it in with some kicks like I do with a 6-beat downrock move I brought from breaking. And the thing that really needs to be cleared up is that freestyle is NOT A ROUTINE! That's why it's called freestyle, it's freeform and not locked in position everytime. Being able to freestyle is being able to do it in any song on just about any difficulty. I can freestyle on Max300 Heavy and still pass with a C. And it's not like I memorized the songs, I do have my songs that I like to pull specific moves like my D-Break or a Matrix Walk, but I always do a good mix of songs and have fun with them.

freestyle isnt always about "style and dancing"

Ive done routines where i dont even dance. it's all about creativeness.

Anyone can dance but not anyone can be creative.

For some reason, I want to learn the harmonica and then jam it out on Jet World.

In theory, it sounds cool.

Will I look whiter by doing it than I already am?

Yes

i love that idea purly for the fact that i was considering making a freestyle w/ a harmonica interlude like that to cowgirl.

...then again, i also thought it might be cool if i had my 2 friends (one on the banjo, one blowing on a jug) come and play next to the machine while i rode a hobby horse... disturb.gif

obviously, i am truely a superb FS'er riiight.gif

I am teaching myself Freestyle right now, I'm trying to keep lowering my body to a minimum, A.K.A. having real dance-like moves my stylish feet moevements and upperbody movements at the same time.

What is the bystanders reaction to hitting

up
up
up
up

while spinning, and alternating feet?

or hitting one arrow with two feet?
I have no idea how to impress a crowd, c'mon help me out here will ya?

She's harsh, isn't she? If you try the thing with the horse, I'll play the jug! laugh.gif

But seriously, does anyone have any ideas for interesting moves for Drop Out Heavy during that one stream of regular notes when you just sort of weave back and forth (right before the end runs)? That song is just not meant to be straight PA'd all the way through it.

Depends on how fast it is... normal 1/8 th notes or normal beats with a second to spare between them or what?

I assume they are normal notes that you have enough time to switch feet with so what I would do is just experiment and try something new.

Maybe use both feet on the arrow and switch feet as your hitting it like your jogging on one arrow. You could also try a combination of spinning and switching feet. Also... just because some arrows arnt on the screen doenst mean you cant use them. I see freestyle routines all the time done on light mode and even when there are no arrows on the screen people will still hit the arrows to stay in beat or do something as part of their routine.

Try using a combo of your heel and toe as well. Maybe hit the first two up arrows with your heel facing towards the screen and then the last two up arrows facing away from the screen with your toes.

Also... there is nothing wrong with spinning ON the arrow. Some people will use a 4 arrow combo to spin but just yesterday as a matter of fact I saw a freestyle routine where the guy would put his foot on the arrow and keep it there and spin his foot on the arrow.

Also... going off the topic of your 4 up arrows... in general speak most people will do routines on either light or standard. Well I saw a freestyle thing where these 2 kids were playing Drop the Bomb on light mode and at the very beginning there are some arrows you hit then there is a 5 second pause and these kids actually got off the pad and ran around the machine and thus switched pads with each other and continued the song.

I didn't read through all 35 pages, but does anyone know of a few good songs to freestyle to from DDRMax?

My friend and I (she's a good dancer but has never played DDR) want to freestyle so preferably something that isn't too hard.

Please don't suggest Kind Lady because that's freestyled a lot and we'd just rather do something different.

Thanks!

<--------------------has freestyled to Spin the Disc mad style E15.gif

I just thought I'd mention, there have been plenty of storytelling freestyles. Or at least we've had a few here. Another kind is parodies, which is basically people making an buttocks out of themselves to make people laugh.

Such a good mix, that...here're the easier ones:

5.1.1.
AM-3P
Baby Baby Gimme Your Love
celebrate
Cutie Chaser
Do It Right (2 step)
Electro Tuned
Get Me In Your Sight
I Was the One
Let the Beat Hit Em (both)
Let's Talk it Over
My Summer Love
Never Let You Down
Ordinary World
Overblast!!
Peace Out
Sana Morette Ne Ente
Secret Rendezvous
Share My Love
So in Love
Spin the Disc
Take it to the Morning Light (!!!)
true...~trance mix~

Once you get good enough, you'll realize that while some are a little harder than others to groove to, you can choose anything and make it look good. Trust me, people at tourneys enjoy seeing something new. Sounds like you're just trying for something at home, though, so have fun with those. =)
