Personally, I'm starting to wish they had a separate forum specifically for soft pads, given the fact that there are 70 frickin' pages worth of posts. Anywho, here's my dilemma.

I've decided to take the plunge and get an Xbox and DDR Ultramix (while PS2 has more game support, it is more likely to be outmoded by a next generation system than XBox), but that leaves me with a significant puzzle as to what to do with dance pads.

Living in Vancouver, BC, Canada, most of my shopping will have to either go to Richmond (although I would guess most of the accessories would be for PS2) or on-line.

I've heard really good things about the BNS pads and the RedOctane products, although I'm a little weary of blowing lots of money on a product that is just going to fail within a few months anyway. At the same time, RedOctane manufacturers pads specifically for XBox, while BNS pads need to be adapted to fit, plus there may be an introduction of response delay into the mix, which could be bad.

So, what is the best option for me?

-Take the plunge and just buy a RedOctane pad.
-Save money, take a risk on the BNS pad.
-Find an official Konami pad and modify it with a Ignition foam insert.
-Just buy a cheaper pad (ie: MadCatz) and modify it with duct tape and a piece of plywood.

I just got my Vortz pads today, only played one round so far, but they feel good. They are a little bigger than my old pads so that will take a little while to get used to, and also the raised arrows are really nice. I'll update in a while to let u know how they are holding up. E1.gif

Ok, i've had my Vortz 3.0 pads for about 2 1/2 weeks. They are still holding up really well. Once in a while i will get a good or below on a step, but i think its just that my food didnt hit the button at the right time...happy.gif Anywho, they are still very sensitive, and the hard foam is so comfortable to dance on. The pad doesnt move that much, the most its moved for me is about an inch or two, but i'm not up to the 8-10 footers on heavy yet. (i can do some 8 footers but not many). I mostly play on standard, but i am capable of playing heavy. I will play heavy if i want a good challenge.
The raised arrows have been worn in and they are like little bowls (not quite as deep as a bowl, but the general shape of one), but they still are sensitive. None of the raised arrows have moved, as i have heard some people say that theirs have shifted around inside the pad.
When you are dancing there isnt much noise, there is some, but not much... I've noticed that you get more noise if you play barefooted than with socks, but with socks its a little more slippery..(i've almost twisted my ankle a couple times cause i slipped... so be careful!!) Even though i've slipped a couple times, I personally like socks better cause your feet dont stick to the pad.
I havnt checked the inside of my pad to see if its ripping yet, but i doubt that it is... Even if it was, i would just get out the good ol' duct tape, fixer of all!
So...Overall, they are still like brand new, except for the bowl-like arrows, and that doesnt affect play at all. E1.gif
Hope this was helpful to those of you out there looking at these on Ebay. (from what i've seen ebay is all out of these right now, but the guy is getting more soon)

This newbie needs a little help figuring out the choices for DDR pads E1.gif

Right now I am playing on a vortz pad with the 1" foam, but this one isn't mine and I have to buy two of my own now. I would like to find something that would be almost as good but at a lower price.

Is there one that I could find that is made of the nylon material (not the plastic) that is a lower cost than the one I have now? The more affordable the better. Also is it possible to get one of the cheaper one and mount it to more padding, say a workout mat, to give it a softer feel?

I have seen on here something about a chairmat mod...could somebody tell me exaclty what that consists of?

Ok last thing, sorry for the long post. I am going to be using this on a windows/linux pc with the free stepmania software. Will it matter if I choose a playstation pad or xbox pad? Or is the only compatible usb adapter for playstation? Thanks in advnace for the help! Carla E1.gif

PS any links to a place to buy any suggested pad would help too E13.gif E13.gif

The best deal for a very good pair of ignition pads w/ "hard" foam (even after BNS,levelsix, cyphergames, ddrgame, whatever other ddr selling websites):

The surface of vortzpads is almost like nylon type unlike BNS with the sticky plastic feeling, if thats what your meaning. When I played on a nylon type, it seemed not as durable as the plastic looking surface, but I have yet to hear anyone have top surface of their pad tear/break.

Softer feel, are you sure you want it to be softer? Does the vortz pad have the 1in foam that kinda soft and squishy and not hard/dense? I find the "soft" type not as responsive as compared to "hard" type when playing. Usually if you are going to mount a pad, it is usually to give it more weight so it doesn't move as much as seen here.

If you get vortzpad 3.0 or ignition pad with hard foam, then the chairmat is unnecessary. The mod was for older ignition pads that had thinner foam and a chairmat was placed inside to fill in the gap. People usually don't mod their ignition pad. If the pad moves too much for you, then mounting it to plywood would be done.

There are alot of ps2 to pc adapters and vendors as opposed to xbox to pc, and more ps2 pad vendors, so stay with ps2. If you have an xbox, get a ps2 to xbox convertor. Stepmania has an adapter page for compatible devices. vortzgame ebay retailer sells a superdual box usb 2player adapter that works with stepmania as a quick suggestion. I'm not sure of an xbox to pc convertor though...

well my plywood mod has started to flatten back down a little bit, not much.
But the plywood on the rug moves just about as much as the pad did on the rug lol I think its mostly because the plywood did warp, and when it bounces it moves around... I'd try to get more creative here but I dont know whats under the rug ~ probably cement, but if I'm luckily there is wood - like cheap floodboard/plywood, and I could nail it in leaving it in a semi permanent position. Hrm

How thick is your plywood? When I modded my EBay Soft Pad on plywood, I made sure I bought a 1/2 Inch thick of plywood [with 33in and 36in size]. With that size, you should be able to move around - even on rug. Maybe you bought the wrong wood or have smaller thickness.

I would go for Save Money and take a risk on the BNS Pad. It should last about 6 months for an average Heavy player. But if the pad last less than 2 months, than I suggest buy the soft pad [ie: MadCatz], and buy plywood + duct tape + DDR Cover [needed to have the "full potential" of a modded pad].

If you go for BNS Pad [and dies within 2 months], you could use the Inserts as replacement of plywood. Though it won't be strong as plywood [such as it moves around too much], you do not have to play with your shoes.

I learned the hard way - I bought a Mad Catz pad and it was the worse purchase EVER! You couldn't have your feet and arrows at the same time, it wouldn't register correctly! I was DISSAPOINTED! I learned that the pad wasn't working correctly when I went through the Lessons on DDRMax2 (yeah, I'm new at this) - when I got to Part Two, lesson 2, my pad just s*cked! Anyway, I need some Recommendations! THANKS!!!! Carole E4.gif

It is the 1inch with hardinsert
If you read the pages before 2.0 is 0.5 inch soft insert and 2.5 is 1inch soft insert

Flat rate shipping is the only type for most if not all DDR pad sellers. Despite that, its still cheaper than 2 BNS or 1 RO pad.

Its a great deal if you ask me. Yea, shipping its pretty high, but like vsamaco said, its cheaper than 2 bns or 1 ro, and they are all pretty much the same quality. E1.gif i have the vortz pads, and i love 'em.

Thanks for all the help. I think I will buy one of the cheaper ones since it may only last a few months anyway E1.gif

I have been looking on ebay and they have the one with the green trim, but it never says who the company is that makes it. With the el'chepo models does it matter which company?

Also should I buy these off ebay or is there a better place online to buy them? Thanks so much! Carla E1.gif

You might as well buy a cheap soft pad off of ebay. When you do get one and begin playing harder songs or before you play, I'd advise you to mount the pad to plywood to weight it down. Note, these types of pads will die out very quickly if their aren't modded from the beginning. Links to soft pad modding on the first page of this topic.

If you like ddr and comfortable with ebay, you should check out vortzgame v3.0 ignition pad. You can play those pads out of the box and have little difficulty doing harder songs later and no modding is necessary. I couldn't do half the songs I do on my ignition pad on a cheap soft pad.

Those pads looks like another madcatz disaster, in others words "not good". Above comment can also apply to you. Skip the crap pads and go straight to ignition pads, they are a god send. Vortzgame dealer also has xbox pads but with the game... Maybe they'll have ones w/o game next week. Or you can get a ps2 pad and use the gemini ps2 to xbox adapter. It'll work perfectly, although if you play ultramix online, people will think your cheating cause the pads are detected as something different, but are still playable.

Earlier today:

I have a RedOctane dance pad (the one with the foam insert, it's also the multi-console one)... I got it a few days ago for my birthday, started playing Friday when I picked up DDRMAX2 for PS2. My old dance pads (the really cheap, soft kinds) had broken with DDRMAX and I couldn't find it anymore, so I just bought MAX2.

It was working fine until today. I was playing, and occasionally, when the song started, it would immediately display "FAILED" like I had stepped on Start/Select or something. I usually start with my feet on the side arrows, so I took them off, and it worked.

Then, my brother ran into the same problem later today. He's frustrated like hell because it ALWAYS happens to him, even when he stands 5 feet away from the pad. What's wrong? How can I fix it? Has this happened to anyone else before?

As it turned out, later today:

well, actually, I wasn't doing anything, when it started to wig out, alternating between song view options ridiculously fast. So I've come to the conclusion that the START button must be stuck. I don't know how the hell it got stuck, or how you unstick it, but I need help.

Please, help me... I don't want to have gotten a $100 birthday present for nothing.

Only suggestion I cna give you without having to cut the whole thing open is to unzip it and look at the start pad, maybe the problem can be fixed by lifting it up off the foam. I doubt it'll work, but it's worth a shot.
