Most of the spectators, or people who know little about ddr assume that asians are the best at the game, and white people suck at it. When in actuallity, there are only a few asians better then me here. _________________

Well, it does look like a person is spazzing out when he/she is playing a hard song or just playing. I remember watching a friend and his fingers always get all straight. |

Oh and a kids game. Kids are annoying. My friend has a 10 year old brother who plays. He's not heavy enough for freeze steps, he sucks, and hes tha spawn of satan.( sorry that's not part of the stereotype thing but it's true)
Okay well there are my stereotype peeves. |
Well, what do I hate? You mean besides you?
That's what pisses me off. I'm 11 and I hate the stereotype that anyone under 12 will play the following: WWRY. Crash. Witch doctor. Hell, I'm 11 and I usually Play Sakura (heavy) So deep (heavy) any paranoia, maybe a trip machine and sometimes MaxX Unlimited (Heavy).

I turn freeze arrows off, I weigh 78 pounds.

The "girls suck at DDR" thing pisses me off, too. Just because I'm still on Standard doesn't mean I suck because I'm female. It just means other people have a head start on me.
I also hate the assumption that I've been playing a long time. For some reason, that just bothers me. No, I've been playing like...a month and a half. That's not a long time, folks.
Also, just because I have periwinkle hair and play "Dynamite Rave" frequently does NOT make me a raver kthx.
Lastly, I also don't like the assumption that just because I honestly *like* playing Afronova, that I kill it and/or am a n00b. _________________

Hm? Seems like the area around here isn't as bad with sterotypes.
For one thing, DDR does attract a lot of the lame people who have no life and are fanboys of (insert anime here). But me being a girl, I'm not normally assumed as such. So I guess I wouldn't know what it's like.
On that note, I've never heard problems with girls playing DDR around here. Just that you get weird stares and then get jaws dropping when you do well on a heavy song. Which is fine with me, gets me a little attention.
As with kids, I've nearly hit a couple in the face from getting too close to me playing on the machine but other than that............... |

- The stereotype that if you insult a DDR player, that'll make them go online and complain to people about it. Oh wait.
In all truthfulness though:
- The stereotype that just because someone plays on Light/Beginner that they are noobs and can be made fun of.
* The "noobs" are your competition and the DDR community's future. They WILL eventually get to be as good (if not better) than you. And if you treat them like crap, they may either quit (because they think all 'good' DDR players are assholes.) or eventually pwn your face off in a tournament.
- The stereotype that just because you use the bar to pass (whatever) that you can't really play DDR. And that you're dumb for bar raping.
* Using the bar is every player's choice. If they want to do it, let them. Because agian, making fun of them may cause them to break out PSMO on your arse and kick you in the face with it.
- The stereotype that Speed Modding songs is evil.
* Yes, speed mods make songs easier. But they were put on DDR for a reason. To learn steps you couldn't read. I'm not endorsing the fact that if you play using Speed Mods all the time that'll make you a good player. But it can help you.
- The stereotype that all onlookers are there to see is how silly the game is and to make fun of you.
* Some onlookers are geniunely interested in the game. Usually...if someone watches you play a full set, they might actually think the game is fun. A lot of parents usually ask me how the game is played, etc. (Yes...they may seem like dumbs questions because to us it's obvious how the game is played. But you have to remember...most of those people don't play video games.)
- That if you play a BEMANI game, you suddenly are better than the others in the arcade/wherever.
* Wake up call: It's just a video game.
(for the sake of being totally cheesy with this):
Anymore, I find that people don't seem to realize that's all this is. A game. Everyone gets so offended when someone says something to them at the arcade about being "gay" or whatever. Why do you care what they think? They're no better than you. Heck, you can personally consider them lower than you because of the fact that they have to hurl insults at people to make themselves feel cool. We're a community here. We have a great thing going. But it still only is a video game that we're playing. I've seen people get so pissed off that they failed a song that they freaking start screaming at the machine. Or they stomp on the pads, slam against the monitor, etc. That's silly. Or people who freak out because they missed an AAA. Sure, it's frustrating to Black Flag something like stoic or Cartoon Heroes. I've seen DDR egos and rival "DDR gangs" that threaten each other. People that won't attend tournaments unless money is involved or at the very least, a good prize. Since when did the focus of DDR shift from having fun to competing to see who is the better player? It's fun to challenge each other. It's fun to have tournaments. But when your whole life as a DDR player is to see which tournament you can win next or what DDR "champion" you can beat, then you've lost sight of the true aspect of why we started playing. (now I can't vouch for everyone..but I'm sure 99% of you would agree with me):
We started playing because we saw a game that was different. A game that made us interact in a way we hadn't done with another game. Something that got us off our asses and made us (pardon the pun) Get Up N' Move. The game had an enticing premise and great music. Plus, the payouts were good. Some of us lost weight, others became really well known and respected and formed communities (DDRFreak, DDRSTL, BEMANIStyle, etc.), we even got Konami so interested in our ideas that they'd visit the forums to listen to what WE wanted them to do with future releases. Others of us made lasting friendships through playing DDR. We've gotten news coverage, had articles written about us (some not so good), been interviewed, made fun of and experienced a lot. But when it all comes down to it, we started because we saw something new and fun. Not because we aspired to be Legends. We continue to play now...but why? Sure...deep down all of us still see the fun aspect of DDR as we did back when we first picked up a copy of the game, or saw it at an arcade. But on the surface...there's so much turmoil with different people in the communities that sometimes I wonder "Why do I bother to play this game anymore...? All it does is cause drama." But I still go back to the arcade and play. I still come to the forums and post and chat it up with fellow players. Maybe it's because I realize that the DDR craze won't last forever and I want to get every last drop out of fun out of it as I can. Who knows...maybe Konami will find a way to revolutionize DDR again. Reinvent the whole aspect of it and start another craze. And maybe the won't. Maybe KOJ is just tired of the whole DDR scenario. Either way, we should enjoy what we have while it lasts, shouldn't we?

Well I have two sterotypes.
1. If you play DDR then you are dancing. Urgggg!!! I'm so sick of people saying that we dance on while playing DDR. I'm sorry but that's a very stupid statement.
2. If you play DDR then you are playing to get in shape. I get so tired of people saying that I'm working out or exersizing. I'm a long distance runner. Why the hell do I need DDR to get in shape. If I want to really get a work out I'll cycle, run, and do other training exersizes for that.

Very well said, and I agree.
Sadly, the more mainstream DDR starts getting (because, while it's dying in Japan, it's picking up a *lot* of speed in America), the more watered down our community is going to get. The more players there are, the more competition there will be.
Friendly competition, and even friendly heckling of your friends, is absolutely fine...but when a stranger comes into your arcade and you start frowning at them because they might be better than you...that's when you lose the point of the game.
It's still just a game. It's for fun, maybe for some exercise, and it's something fun to waste...I mean, spend ( ) your money on. That's it. _________________

Hey well the 10 yr old may not be heavy enough for freeze arrows but guess what im turning 16 in august and im not heavy enough for the freeze arrows, well unless that arcade pad was broke with freeze arrows causde there was some heavy people idk w/e. |
I *am* sixteen (and well into the year, too), and I can't keep freezes for very long. It's not even me shifting my weight, so I don't know why I can't keep freezes more than two beats or so. Maybe I'm too light. _________________
