I want to try to get into IIDX but there's no way in hell I'll drop a few hundred for a controller for a game I might not even like. I'm way more interested in building my own than buying one anyways, It'll give me something to do while waiting for shipping if I decide to order a game.

The difficult part is finding the correct type of buttons. Happ and many places do not sell the correct type of pushbuttons that you need (and it's not that they're just a little off, they're WAAAAAAY off).

IMHO, unless you have lots of time on your hands, and you're good with carpentry, don't bother; it may be a lot more trouble than it's worth, especially if it turns out that you don't like IIDX.

Stick with a an official IIDX home controller, especially if you're just starting, or dipping your toes into the water.

Besides the buttons the turntable is going to be nearly impossible to make without ordering a controller and using the parts from that.

Yeah, just stick with an official controller to start. The thing to remember about IIDX (and Bemani in general) is that the supply/demand is fairly static, and the majority of controller/game purchases occur on eBay and/or between fellow players. In other words, if you pay $100 for a controller only to find that you don't like it, chances are good that you'll be able to put it right back up on eBay and get close to the same amount for it.
