Jack was playing Abyss on Basic mode, thus it's before 5th mix.

I saw that episode, too. I even posted about it in my Livejournal. Gay guys doesn't mean they're better, they probably just don't give a poopy what str8 guys think because they get hassled enough as is for sexuality.

I've played for a while so far without much incident. One kid was frick around with the back arrow when I was playing and I made sure to "accidently" hit him in the face while dancing seeing he was like 6 inches behind me. As for the whole being called gay thing, I say frick it. On top of DDR I take dance class and am going into modeling school...now thats pretty gay if you ask me. laugh.gif

It was a 5th Mix machine. It showed NAOKI dancing and the layout was from 5th Mix.

But anyways...ignore them is my advice. They'll eventually get sick of it and quit. Or, if you really want vengence or whatever...either:

A - flirt with them (in order to embarrass them). But I don't recommend this one unless you're familiar with the arcade and stuff. In order to keep yourself from getting hurt.

B - offer them a "Free Game". As in, tell them that if they can do better than you at DDR then the game is on you. (As in, they pay their money to play and if they do better than you, you pay them back the equal amount.) 99.9% of the time, they suck and lose money.

C - If they get on the machine and hassle you and try to mess you up, first tell them to get off the machine. If they don't, warn them after your song is up. If they persist - WALLOP THE LIVING SNOT OUT OF THE LITTLE PISSANT. But only do it "accidentally". Like, flail one of your arms during a song and 'accidentally' hit them. riiight.gif

But...the best advice is to ignore them. If they persist and you don't feel like confronting them, call the management. Normally, they'll remove any hecklers. If they don't care and don't anything (don't confuse this with them actually not being ABLE to help.)...I'd suggest not playing at that arcade. Not worth your time or your money.

Sexual orientation has no impact on ability to dance or ability to play DDR.

Personal interest in either, however, does.

Having never played in the arcades, I don't have any experiences to share regarding the questioning of my sexuality. Well, none that are DDR related (when I was RuPaul's webmaster, a lot of people questioned it, including my mother).

But the fact of the matter is that there is a line, drawn boldly in the firmament. It looks something like this:

macho football-lovin' emotionally distant manly man
------------------------------------------------------------
pansy dancing techno/trance/pop loving girly man

See that line there? Once the manly man crosses any portion of it, or, in the wild, sees that some other man has crossed any portion of it, out comes the use of "gay". "Gay" is anything that doesn't fit on the macho side.

Even if you're the biggest bad@ss in the tri-state area, once you cross that line, you can expect to hear somebody call you "gay".

Heh, if only it were so simple. The use of "gay" these days is mostly a statement of disapproval. However, one cannot expect the arcade denizens to stop, watch for a bit, and say, "This game has little value to me and I do not respect those that play it." Nope, sorry, it's easier to just say, "That's gay". This use of the word comes from the lack of respect and acceptance that gay men and women have experienced over the years. Since it was, at one point, universally accepted that nothing "gay" was acceptable, the word itself now means "unacceptable", but carries with it a particularly stinging bite, especially when experienced by people who aren't homosexual and feel some animosity around the implication that their activities (DDR) call into question their heterosexuality.

So the problem is two-fold: 1) People using "gay" mainly to state displeasure; 2) People on the receiving end unable to deal with the implication of the word.

The solution, as many others have noted, is to ignore it. Don't let it bother you.

Even if everybody stopped using the word "gay", they'd move to some new word that would incense others just as much. So it's better to simply stop placing importance in the words of those who are irrelevant.

I never knew a machine could be gay. Or turn people gay. Alas.

Ah well! *hugs* You should play too! :-)

I've never had such a situation happen in real life, but I am well prepared with the comeback.

Note: Given the response to this, (especially considering the subject would be a bit more sensitive to the GLBT community), I'm really not seeing a strong correlation between the sex stereotype and reality. Someone should do a poll or something, that'd be interesting information...

Actually, in my location... An unusually large number of homosexual guys are into DDR. I don't care either way, but I did find it odd.

I think when they say gay its meant as an insult. The ideas of bright flashing lights and odd japanese music with young girl singers kind of go to the stereotypical idea of a homosexual, but thats all it is a stereotype. Those people are simple minded, ignorant, biggots. When someone calls me a bundle of sticks I just wink at em E13.gif

It's happened to me before, but I said to the loser "You wanna come and try it?" he just laughed and walked away. Don't worry about it, they just wish they were man enough to play

um... Oolong... do you ever go out sometime? I mean you not knowing that gay is now a term for uncool might mean either you dont know what people your age say, or youre too young to comprehend it. That, and are you sure youre not homophobic?

T_T
i know that it means that. i just think it's really stupid that people say that. because what they're saying is 'gay people are uncool'.
you can call me a homophobe if you want, whatever

I dont really have this problem at all, when I play DDR at the arcade or any where else for that matter my girlfriend comes with me %99 of the time so people could never make that reference to me... I could never be thought of as gay or any thing else so obviously if people have even an IQ just over a monkey they can still make the connection that I have a g/f and wouldnt even bother to tease me calling me a cigarette or such

First off - as a reply to an earlier topic who declared that guys were better than girls. That is NOT true. I may not be the best dancer in the nation but I can sure give my male friends a run for their money (if I wanted to) - and they can DDR well. To conclude - guys may get MORE attention than girls (even if they both play good) but it certainly does NOT mean that they play Better.

Anyway - back on topic riiight.gif - like many replies here - the people around my place actually think DDR's cool. They gather around and stare in awe. I haven't been insulted ever on DDR. Nor have any of my friends.
Gay is a terrible word - whether it is used in a harmful/unharmful way - I personally think homosexual people are very strong because they can withstand the constant stares and remarks they get from people. Thumbs up to them E1.gif

Also - I dont see a problem with people who are totally in love with anime. It just shows that they are very dedicated to something that they like very very much. I'm sure everyone has a way of showing that they love something - whether it be holding their partner's hand, saying that they love them or giving them a sneaky peck. These people wear anime shirts...so what? It's THEIR way of showing it...

*breaths heavily* and thats all I have to say riiight.gif I'm sorry, Im not trying to make a speech, I'm just trying to put my point across and I am not expecting a comeback or anything - if I wanted to debate about something I'd join my school's Senior Debating Society E1.gif Thanks for reading E4.gif
