There is neither arcade around me at all, and I've played IIDX on an ASC and have a coupla sims for it, and am now thinking of which to import. DDR is not as fun as it used to be, and I need a new Bemani, one of the two. Which one would you say it more fun to you, and challenging? Please no flamebit, and if this thread is against the FAQ, lock. |

They are both challenging in tehre own ways. In some ways, i see IIDX as a harder game, and in some ways i find Pop'n as a harder game. Both have there strong points. I prefer Pop'n to (5 key) beatmania, havnt played IIDX (nor pop'n, but i love the music and playing step'n music). _________________

I've always enjoyed IIDX more. If I were you, I'd import that. (and get 7th Style) |

Pop'n with an ASC = TONS more fun than IIDX and a variety of music
IIDX = better music in my opinion but its all mostly the same genre
Popn is a lot more challenging than IIDX singles overall, but IIDX is a lot harder to pick up. _________________

i love both games w/ their variety of music, and their styles of play.
but IMO i love IIDX way more than Pop'n, i play both, but i passed up to 34s in pop'n w/ only 2 weeks of playing, while i still struggle in certain Flashing 7s in IIDX and i've been playing for over 7 months, i know i suck in IIDX, but i'm still doing everything possible to get better. But i do enjoy IIDX more than pop'n |

First of all, if you get Pop'n, you need an ASC. The tiny controller doesn't even come close to showing you the true awesomeness of Pop'n Music. And when you're in the market for a PNM arcade style controller, nothing beats a Ransai.
As for which is superior, it's really hard to say. With Pop'n, you get a much gentler learning curve that leads up to insanely difficult songs. You also get a much wider variety of music by far, running the gamut from opera to punk to R&B to special cooking (what? It is too a genre). Game + controller = about $350 with shipping.
With IIDX you get a lot of techno, trance and other variations on that theme. The plus side is that 95% of it is really good variations on that theme. Despite its relative lack of variety compared to Pop'n, the last thing you'll ever hear me complain about in IIDX is the music. Compared to Pop'n, IIDX's learning curve is ridiculous. Plan to spend a few hours in Beginner mode before you even venture into Light 7 and from there it's going to be even longer before you're good enough to take on 7 Key and Another. But on the plus side, this difficulty means that the game really never gets old...even when you get to be awesome, you can always improve. Unlike Pop'n Music, the IIDX arcade style controller is really a luxury and the standard official Konami controller will serve your needs just fine. Game + controller = about $220 with shipping.
If you asked me to pick just one, I'd have a hard time. Personally I'm more of a IIDX player, but that's mostly due to budget limitations...hell, just pick one at random. They're both awesome games and incredibly fun...plus the skills you learn in either will make the transition to the other much smoother. _________________

I just recently imported both pop'n and IIDX... I figured that their resale value is high enough that I might as well buy them both, figure out which one I like more, and sell the other one.
It turns out (for me anyway) that I enjoy pop'n a lot more than IIDX. Even with the small pop'n controller (but don't worry, I'll have an ASC soon enough.) I've played a lot of IIDX on beginner mode, and I just get frustrated at the timing. Getting "just greats" are critical to getting a good grade on a song in IIDX, but the timing window seems so stingy that just greats are practically awarded at random. I can usually FC a bunch of songs on beginner now, but I never get higher than an A, and most of the time I have more greats than just greats. I can't even manage to get all "just greats" on the first level of drill mode which is only 8 notes, and I've tried over and over and over.
By contrast, the timing on pop'n music is pretty relaxed. After playing for a couple of weeks, I can almost 100k (perfect score) a couple of the easier songs. I still get my buttocks handed to me on anything over 24 in difficulty (roughly equivalent to a 6-footer in DDR.)
There are other things that make pop'n better to me, like the fun atmosphere vs. the serious nature of IIDX, and the vast genre spread vs. the techno / house of IIDX. I'll probably keep trying IIDX for a couple more weeks to see if I can learn to like it, but I already know I'll be keeping the pop'n music. _________________

I'm a huge fan of the genres IIDX puts out so it fairs better than PopN' music style but not by a landslide as there are still tons of PopN' songs I like.
IIDX has a steep learning curve but that never bothered me.
Here is the HUGE seperator for me ATM:
Quality ASC for PopN': $280 w/ shipping
Quality ASC for IIDX: $450 w/ shipping
Can you say **** IIDX until a better priced one comes out (RanSai has mentioned summer release of a IIDX ASC)? I'm not blowing almost $200 more on a game that at some times I like more than Pop N'.
If you want to start now, I suggest Pop N'. Your hands (and elbows/arms) will be all over the place on harder songs and Pop N' 8/9 have like over 100+ songs. _________________

well as an owner of the regular IIDX controller and having my good friend who owns an ASC, i must say that IIDX is MUCH MUCH better than anything now that i actually played on the ASC, i think the gameplay is a lot more fun w/ the clicking buttons, i own a Ransai Pop'n controller, and i do admit it is a lot of fun, but the IIDX ASC is a huge treat to have, especially if u want the closest experience to the arcade if u have no IIDX machines nearby. |

I honestly have more fun playing IIDX than I do playing Pop'n.
I enjoy IIDX's music more. No, it's not as varied as Pop'n's, but I'm a big fan of trance/house/eurobeat/etc, so that's fine with me. I love 99% of IIDX's music. I love Pop'n's music, too, but a lot of it simply isn't the kind of music I normally enjoy.
I enjoy IIDX's scoring more than Pop'n's. I've never been very good at Perfecting things. It just frustrates me. Repeatedly getting 1 Good on a song gets old fast. As a matter of fact, that's one of the reasons I don't play DDR much anymore- I could AA almost anything, but AAA almost nothing. I'm just not a perfectionist. In IIDX, you could screw up and get 10 Poors, but still get an awesome score. It's easier on me to know that a mistake isn't the end of the world.
Maybe if/when Remy's Pop'n ranking site opens, I'll start working harder at improving my Pop'n scoring. Until then, I don't see the point in playing for score if it only frustrates me. I know VJ Army helped me enjoy IIDX more, maybe his new site will do the same for Pop'n. |

Eric Tiko - I can't decide for you. It depends on what you like.
There's a defnite stylistic difference between the two. PM is "lighter" and more "cartoony"; IIDX is "harder" (for the most part). That's reasonable, since PM is aimed toward a broad market, whereas IIDX is dance music and its derivatives.
Both games have a tremendous variety of songs. I find it silly to see these mega-hardcore IIDX players never play R&B songs, never play dance pop, never play happy hardcore or instrumental or latin or hip-hop, never play anything downtempo ("This song is toooo SLOW!!!!!")...and then complain about how "all IIDX songs sound the same". If your tastes are extremely limited, you're going to hate IIDX, period. If they're not, there's plenty in it for you. And there's plenty that's not cartoony or childish in PM, although of course Konami would've been foolish to ignore that demographic.
PM by far has a much gentler learning curve, and you won't get 50 impossible songs thrown in your face at 9-key. To be perfectly honest, though, IIDX isn't all that bad in this department, either. It's on the hard side, no question, but if you start at the very bottom and work your way up one song at a time (stop me if you've heard this before! ), you'll have a ton of fun and steadily improve. The only really bad one is 6th Style 7 Key, which is a much better track record than some series I could name.
If you can't get a controller at a reasonable price (and I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, it's going to be very difficult no matter what), consider using an ordinary joystick. Not a DualShock (unless you have the adaptive ability of computer gamer), an actual stick with buttons. You'd be surprised at how easy it is to get used to. In fact, I've played PM with a stick for so long, I actually once had a little trouble adjusting to the arcade machine.
Whatever you choose, though, start at the earliest game you can find...and prepared to shell out a lot more after you get completely hooked.
Good luck! |

Well...I have both PNM and IIDX for home. But I perfer IIDX because of the my ASC. I would probably like PNM more if I hade a ASC. It kinda sucks using the small controller...I don't play it enough to make myself buy a ASC... _________________

i highly envy anyone who owns the IIDX ASC, but i can honestly say i play great on both the small and ASC in IIDX, but certain songs i can score better on the ASC, maybe standing up does help me a lot. |
