Research paper on DDR

Alex Chan, a student at Stanford University, has written a paper about the DDR community called CPR for the Arcade Culture: A Case History on the Development of the Dance Dance Revolution Community. It is an interesting read about the development of the unique way the DDR comunity formed and thrived. Check it out!

After finally reading this report, I thought everything he explained was well thought out. Did he get a A on that report cause if I was his teacher (not being a DDR player that is) and I read something like this I'd definately give him an A on it

I have read the report and feel that it was very well informed and well thought out. He captured the appeal and differences between Bemani games and other Community games. If feel very proud to be addicted to the subject matter of such a very well written article.

I honestly think that this was a well thought out paper. I think that he should join the ddr community as a "hardcore" player. He seems pretty cool. There were some weird points but honestly I could not do any better so thank you for that great essay I honestly think it was worth the 5 mins it took me to read it.

Again, great essay, though I would deduct some points for his repitition to reinstate the difference between DDR and online MMORPGs and FPSs (some professors do count off for reusing words or sentences like that). Still, it's great for those to understand the phenomenon who are not part of the DDR/Bemani "in-crowd".

The essay made a reference to another paper, "A Case History of the success of Dance Dance Revolution in the United States", written by David Liu. It was written in March, 2002 and discussed why DDR was so successful in the US in terms of Konami's efforts (at the time, really), and the influence of gaming communities around DDR.

He also quoted from Jacob Smith PhD paper, of Indiana University Department of Communication and Culture, in the paper "I Can See Tomorrow in Your Dance: A Study of Dance Dance Revolution and Music Video Game Fan Cultures". THe paper discusses the nature of DDR fan culture.

Just to get one thing clear. Southern Hills Golfland was where the very first U.S. DDR tournament was held. 3/4/2000, not the Santa Monica Pier. That's where Jenith won with his infamous Paranoia 180 (Maniac) Routine. Good Article tho.

Very informative paper. The only gripe I have about it is that I think he should've compared the DDR community to a similar community. The fighting game community has undoubtedly been around longer than the DDR community has, and no doubt has a much bigger fanbase than that of the DDR community. Subtitling his paper, "CPR for the Arcade Culture," doesn't do the fighting game community any justice, nor does it even get an honorable mention.
