curious as to why mods lock threads and say
"maybe you should check (insert proper thread name) here." or "this really belongs in (proper name) thread", and they don't allow the original thread creator the power to actually move their own created thread. i know it sounds a little too crazy since one could move their thread from chit-chat to i.e. 'latin america' or 'rest of the world'. but the crazyness of that can be controlled enough so that threads can be moved to only specific places by their creators. this way, it can be limited so it doesn't get out of hand like on April 1st. i just wanted to voice a small opinion and i didn't want to start this thread saying
"Does anyone agree with me that..."

Uh...no.

That would get too out of hand. If we only let them move it to ONE place, it would still get crazy. It really isn't that hard for them to just repost the thread in the correct place.

As for why we don't move it ourselves: we used to, but people stopped caring about putting it in the right place and would simply expect us to do it. So we lock the threads now so that they're forced to follow that rule.

1. Shadow topics become a pain in the ass.
2. If no shadow topic is left behind, people will make a new one thinking it was deleted because they didn't take the time to look in the right forum where it was probobly moved to.

When you move a thread, the default option is set to leave a shadow copy. I think you can change that though (the default)

And we have changed it. You'll notice there's no shadow topics anywhere on the forum. Then again, we hardly move threads.

You're not a retard, you just probably haven't seen one.

Sometimes when a moderator moves a topic, they have the option of making a "shadow" of the topic. Where the topic is moved to another forum, and link to that topic stays in the forum it was originally in. The link, is the shadow.

Oh yeah, now I remember moving threads on april 1st and the default was to not leave a shadow!

Leaving shadows makes the forum look really sloppy, the admins over at another forum require us (the mods) to leave redirects when moving threads (redirects are VB's term for shadows)

That is good discipline that you bring to the users. It makes them use common sense in this forum. And it does not make them depend on mods/admins to move threads to proper boards. Thanks for clairifying this. biggrin.gif
