Help - configuring controller options

I am completely new to this whole console thing - never have played PS or Xbox, rarely have played games at an arcade, but I just purchased DDR PC and a BNS Ultra NX dance pad with a parallel port adapter.

I downloaded NTPAD XP V2.0 (running Windows XP Home edition). In the driver config, I can see the pad and each button registers on the button mapping.

But when I start DDR and get to the menu screen, the menu select bar just looks like I'm holding down an arrow key on the keyboard. If I step on the mat, I can sometimes get into the OPTIONS menu and it does see the pad, but I don't know which to pick - DDR pad, General PC, etc. Do I need to remap buttons or select different options in the driver? Never having used any controller, I'm not even familiar with the terminology.
