Yeah.. just so everyone knows I am not really ever planning on owning two IIDX controllers just because I can't really play anything above 3 star songs on beginner in IIDX on 7 keys....yes..I am horrible...thats why I am unsure how and where to progress to. If this topic keeps going the way it is I will probably have enough money to buy everything (for both games) once I make up my mind. See, I do enjoy building things so I figure I can build the Pop'n controller but this may take me a few weeks plus shipping for some of the parts so that could be over a month. I think now that my best option is to build the pop'n controller, and purchase Pop'n 9 while I practice my IIDX skillz at the arcade, simply because the Pop'n machine is a drive and a half away. All in favor of this decision say Aye...Those opposed, umm....give me a reason to change my mind (once again) Thanks

I'd recommend Pop'n over IIDX, especially if you can play IIDX in the arcade. However, I wouldn't recommend building your own controller unless you use the real arcade buttons. From what I've heard, the homemade controllers that use the flat buttons make some songs impossible, with all the multiple key presses and such. I'd certainly hate to put the effort and money into building a controller that will limit my ability.

(because I am not dropping $450 on a pop'n ASC) aren't the buttons on the konami pop'n controller (the 70 dollar one) flat? I don't see them being rounded and the problem is that if you buy the arcade style buttons it'll end up being over $100 just for the buttons....but no one said this stuff was cheap...

The entire controller is also as big as 3 buttons on the official controller....
If you dont wanna drop 450 try 250 for a Ransai or Desktoparcade, but you really really should try the game out in some form before dropping that much on the controller. The small controller is prolly a good idea for now and if you like it you can easily sell the small controller and get the ransai

If you do pick up the Ransai you will be more then happy...actually ecstatic. It made the whole PNM series a blast to play and has now removed IIDX from my top list. Those other controllers will play tricks on you so you think you're good. E1.gif

okay so i think I have decided on II DX simply because getting it is cheaper and less messy to get. Thanks for everyones opinions but I have one more question...

Is the "flashing great/great" window in the II DX home version different than the arcade? this is a big deal for DDR because it is easier to get perfects at home but is II DX the same way? thanks....

To tell you the truth, I've actually had a tougher time hitting flashing greats (or for some reason, they're called Just Greats, even though that sounds more like normal greats) at home than in the arcade. Probably because the clunkyness of the home controller sucks compared to the clickiness of the arcade.

But technically, yes, they are the same.

The only reason why DDR home version had a wider perfect window was because some dance mats suck, and have a slight delay in sending the data. So the perfect window had to be increased to allow for the delay.

No other Bemani has this problem, so every other home version is exact to the arcade, including IIDX.

Drummania 1st Mix requires you to hit a bit early in the PS2 version, but I don't think this will be an issue here. ;-)

PNM 6 seemed like it had a much looser Cool timing window in the arcade version, though. And god knows what the original 5 key BM games are like in comparison, because they have such fucked up timing anyway.

enjoy your purchase, toejamm.

IIDX will undoubtedly display a steeper learning curve of the two games. What most people fail to realize is the irony of the game's difficulty - it's called a steep curve for a reason; you play blindly for weeks/months/what have you, and then suddenly, it all clicks.

with pop'n music, you're going to start off with ridiculously easy (and boring) note charts, no matter which version of PnM you get.

if you haven't bought anything yet, I'd highly recommend getting either 4th style IIDX or 6th style.

4th style: hard, good music. if you can deal with a month of frustration when you fail every song, you will eventually hop over the newbie hump and learn VERY fast.

6th style: beginner mode, easier songs, also good music. also has A and V, which are two BASTARDS on [A]. 4th also feels mildly dated compared to 6th.

i'd recommend pop'n music as an alternative to IIDX. if you get IIDX and truly decide that you don't like it, then try pop'n.

With 4th styles large song list, ease of use, and insanely cheap price, its great for newbies.

okay, I was actually planning on buying 5th style but is this not a good move? I know I am going to like the game but I don't feel like shelling out $100+ dollars for 4th style. Should I buy 6th style instead of 5th? Oh, and I was also planning on buying from toysnjoys simply because they had cheap shipping and low prices, I also e-mail them asking if they had the products in stock because people have told me horror stories and as of now I am waiting for a reply.

Thanks for walking me through this process, I bad at making descisions like this people... biggrin.gif

I agree, but just so you know, A is not in 6th.

I was being sarcastic in my last post to the guy for giving such a horrible recommendation. 5th style is the best way to go.

Here toejamm, figure it out yourself. ;-)

Song lists:
3rd Style - Lots of stuff that was in DDR
4th Style - Some REALLY hard stuff
5th Style - Nice eclectic song list
6th Style - The Eurobeat and Trance collection

Thanks davidbrit, I was just about to go searching the net for the songlists since gamefaqs doesn't have any adequate(I don't think I spelled that right) ones. I am pretty sure that I will buy 5th but I will check out the song lists just to make up my mind fully.

Edit: 5th style it is. 3rd just had way too much ddr stuff and as much as I like it I want to branch away from it and see the other kinds of music in the game. And although 5th style has some ddr songs (V, Spin the disc, radical faith) They debuted in II DX so thats fine. But its not like this is the only one I will get, I'll probably learn on this game and then hopefully by may I'll get the hang of it and buy 7th style or preorder it before then.

No, you're not understanding. When people compare difficulty, they usually just compare single player/controller difficulty because most people only have one controller. It's not really fair to compare double-controller IIDX to single-controller Pop'n because Pop'n doesn't have a doubles mode. So comparing single-controller to single-controller is only logical. Doubles in Pop'n would just be insane. Although not impossible since it would be similar to Keyboardmania, only with your arms.

So it's not fair to compare 14 keys to 9, yet it's fair to compare 7 to 9? IIDX doubles is closer to Pop'n than anything.

14 - 9 < 9 - 7? That's news to me...

And don't forget the turntables.

jesus, a what's-harder war? c'mon.

Every game gets insanely difficult. Keyboardmania doubles on Tight judgment is by far the most difficult, you can rank from there. I'm never going to be able to pass Presto or what have you on that, and from there I don't care about what game gets harder faster. (better stronger. sorry, couldn't resist ~_^)

If you have an open mind and a decent learning curve, you'll love any Bemani you set your sights on. Nuff said.

Just a warning: you probably won't be ecstatic about it at first. I mean, sure, when my controller came in, I played for 6 hours the first day. But it almost seemed like more of an obligation than anything else. However, when I finished building my Pop'n controller, and I popped in 6, I was blown away. Pop'n is just generally a lot more fun to play than IIDX.

Don't let me discourage you though. If you've never played Pop'n, you won't know what you're missing. I happily played IIDX almost every day for a couple of months until I played Pop'n for the first time. It's a fun game, and like people have said, it's very challenging and will keep you busy for a long time.
