Or is it like DDR Extreme, where it is easy to play without reading Japanese? |

It has a little bit Japanese text then your basic DDR game. Doesn't really take much time to learn the game modes and such. Some things are a bit confusing at first but the over all game is pretty straightforward. |

The only thing that will give you any problems is Osume mode. You don't have to even touch this mode tho, so don't worry about it.
Osume mode is a mode in Pop'n 9 where the game asks you a series of questions, and gives you certain songs based on your answers.
But you can just play normal mode and not even touch this mode. _________________

Sounds like my next "vid" purchase! If the Pop n' songs in DDR Extreme are anything like the rest of the songs in Pop n' then I will be quite happy. |

Anything? No, most songs in Pop N' are much better than those you've heard.
In my opinion, the Pop N' Music songs that they chose for DDR Extreme were not the best songs to pick, except for Daikenkai, which is an okay song for ddr. Theres a bunch of Pop N' Music songs I've heard that would have been perfect for ddr. Like 777 (Twee Pop). I think that would have been a great ddr song. _________________

*ahem* MAHOU NO TOBIRA
The only song I think didn't fit in DDREX from Pop'n was Eurobeat (aka Love Love Sugar). The rest were fine to dance to. In its place I would have liked to see Special Cooking or something that had a better beat to make steps to ^__^ _________________

It's entirely possible to play the game without knowing any Japanese, but it makes things a *little* easier if you know some. For instance, the Sugoroku de 8 wheel-o-challenges was pretty much all in Japanese except for the scattered English phrases like "Random", "Beat-Pop", or "Hi-Speed". I haven't played PnM 9, but I'd assume the songlist interface is basically the same, where you have all of the genre names in katakana, with the banners that pop up if selected. If that's the case, then being able to spot the song you're looking for by its katakana is a time-saver _________________

Pffft. Eurobeat was fine for DDR. It was almost at least kinda fun.
Daikenkai on the other hand is so overplayed for no reason, and the steps look like something I could have pulled out of my arse. _________________
