Well, I am a DDR player mainly and has finally made the move to another Bemani. I purchased the controller and the 4 games for Dreamcast and started. What is really good with DDR is the music. Really great songs. And I was really surprised when the songs on pop'n REALLY sucked! I haven't tried everyone but is every song on any Pop'n Japanese (don't take it personally Japanese friends) crap songs? I was going to buy the arcade controller but since this was so utterly crappy I don't what to think. I guess I must give it more time. As gaming way speaking, it was great.
Please convince me and tell me why I'm wrong about this. Maybe the great songs come from Pop'n 5 and above? I have heard so many speak about the great songs but.....hmm, nope.

OH GOD. No. Seriously, get a PSone and a PS2 now and get yourself Pop'n 5, Pop'n 6, and Pop'n 8. The songlists on all of those fzcking rule; most diversity evar. And I contend that Pop'n 8 is among the greatest video games ever created.
I'm a little biased though. ; _________________

Thanks, I'd guess that it was something like that.
Ok, since I paid "nothing" for my games and controller and will get "alot" if I sell them on ebay I will go for the arcade controller + the PS versions.

Crap songs? No. Or maybe theres something out there that I haven't heard yet. In my opinion, Pop N' Music has the best music I've heard in any music game. Theres barely anything I heard in this game thats sounds average. Almost everything is catchy in it's own way it seems. I mean every now and then, one of the songs get stuck in my head while I am doing something. And the variety is much greater than DDR or even IIDX. Yes, even I was impressed with ddr's songs at first. Then beatmania's music impressed me more. And then when I played Pop N', the music vareity impressed me even more than IIDX. Much more infact.
How is your taste in music, fisringen? Do you like every style of music or just certain ones? What makes the songs on Pop N' crappy to you?
You have to keep in mind that before playing Pop N' Music, that nearly every song uses Japanese lyrics, if you're into that. And some songs you might not like at first when you hear them the first time or couple of times, but eventually you might grow to like them. Like I did. For instance, I didn't care much for the song Shock Of Love. It didn't seem to stand out at first, but now it's one of my favorites.
And If I am not mistaken, most fans feel that the songs in the latest versions are much better than the older ones. And the newer ones have better features.
So I think you should stay with the game a little longer. The newer games have better features too. _________________

It all really depends on what music you like. If you love DDR's music and only that type of music, you'll probably be pretty disappointed in Pop'n Music. There aren't many songs like that in Pop'n Music aside from J-Pop. As the title states, it has a lot of pop-ish songs, and is very kiddy. However, if you have an open mind towards different kinds of music, you'll learn to love Pop'n Music. Also, as said before, try the newer Pop'n Musics. |

I have played a little more and I must say it gets better and better. :-)Maybe it was just the Japanese singing or that I was to DDR addictive, I don't know. I am only listening to Speed and Death Metal privately but when I'm talking dancing/rhythm music I really like Boom Boom Dollar, Butterfly, Baby Balloon, Dub i Dub and alikes. Does the later versions contain any of those?
I can however say that this seems to be a game for me and I appreciate your answers. I guess I will go for the later versions anyway.
Oh, my Arcade controller is "only" 2 months away....I still don't have a Japanese PS2...arghhh.

ASC stands for Arcade Style Controller. Konami sells a controller with small buttons, a non-ASC, and a expensive, semi-rare one that is the same size and style as the arcade machine - the ASC.
A Ransai is a homemade alternative to the ASC that's cheaper. I'm sure someone from the company will post some pictures here shortly |

I didnt like the Popn music much at first. But when you realize Popn is not DDR and has very few songs from it, and actually start to listen to the music you realize how addictive the music is. It might take a lil while to get used to, but YOU DO get hooked. Same thing happened to me when I went from DDR to IIDX, I hated a lot of the music. But when I got over the lack of DDR songs, I realized how good the music. _________________

The games before PNM 6 just don't do the series justice. It also doesn't help that they pretty much mock English speakers with that interface.

Heh. I'm just referring to the fact that you don't get titles on the selection screen - just the genre. And even that is written in Katakana.

DDR's Music is Silly. The Dancemania Line REALLY needs to die. Pop'n has Quirky cool stuff, so I Vote Pop'n for better music. _________________

Yeah, a good portion of DDR's song selection is either formulaic Naoki techno or Dancemania Eurobeat, with a touch of crappy trance sprinkled here and there. Thank god Extreme had Bemani transplants.

*rolls eyes* I think you're missing the point of DDR music, then...it's for dancing. Beatmania and Pop'n are for creating music, which, ya know, has a LOT more potential for variety. _________________

Well obviously. DDR is playable because of its music types, but it sure as hell isn't the sort of stuff I'd sit and listen to.
