I had an interesting idea on how Oni mode could be dumbed-down without thoroughly offending all the diehards (myself included). It probably won't be making it into any version anytime soon, especially if no VIPs read this, but picture a new mode alongside Nonstop and Challenge. It could be called "Nonistop" or something. Basically, it's a combination of the two modes.

You pick a course that consists of 5-8 songs. Difficulty and mods are locked and unselectable, just like Oni. You get the Oni-style battery life bar and the standard four lives. While playing, the game will keep track of your Dance Meter and score as if you were playing Nonstop mode (but not display them).
If you fail the course before passing the fourth stage, the battery will be replaced with the normal Dance Meter, the elapsed time would become your score, and you would continue playing in Nonstop mode. This transition would be seamless and take place in an instant. Nonstop would continue until the end of the 4th stage, and then the course would end. After finishing, or failing Nonstop (game over), you would see the Oni result screen first (showing your progress up to the point where you lost your lives) and then the Nonstop result screen (showing your total step breakdown, score and grade across all four stages).
If you pass the fourth stage, you're playing pure Oni. This is the only way to play the entire 5-8 songs in the course. Lose all your lives and the game is over. Results displayed as usual.
If there are two players, rules are the same. Both players' games are independant of each other, like Oni mode. If one player "fails down" to Nonstop, their game will end after the 4th stage.

This would allow for a few things:
- in arcades, you could try Oni mode without fear of a 10-second game
- you can play Oni with a partner without fear that THEY'll have a 10-second game
- if a course is too hard, you could at least practice the first four stages to your heart's content
- crazy people could try to get both a high Nonstop and Oni score on one course

But at the same time:
- Oni is no easier than before, so it's not really "dumbed down"
- If you don't feel like continuing after moving down to Nonstop, you can always fail on purpose, and it won't affect your Oni result screen
- It's still possible to fail Nonstop, so it's not a golden ticket to a four-song game

Of course this mode would NOT replace Nonstop or Oni mode. There would still be courses you would HAVE to play pure Oni mode to try, and there would still be exclusive Nonstop courses.

So, what do you think?

When I saw "nonistop" I was thinking, how about Endless Oni? It's like Endless mode, but with a battery instead of a life bar. It would actually make it fun, because Endless is pretty easy for veterans like myself.

thats sweet. I wish they had that at my arcade. I don't play Oni much because of fear that I will slip, or just fail the first song. That would be cool. It is a little less die hard though, some people may not like it. It's the risk you take when you play Oni of just losing your money that is many people's incentive. I don't know. I like it though.

The thing is, they make oni with the possibility of failing in the first 10 seconds so the game will still make about the same amount of money if people keep picking onis. If people are almost guaranteed four stages each time they play oni, the game wouldn't be getting as many people playing each time, and thus, it would make less money.

If they put it in a home version, it would be fine, though.

Yea, I agree.

What also confuses me is why you'd be upset over getting 4 songs right up front. I'd think you'd make more money...

After doing some thinking, I see where Knight of Nee was coming from. Basically, any n00b who is good enough to play nonstop can just try out oni for free, and once they fail, oh well, they get 4 songs, where otherwise they would have to pay for an extra game to try oni, even thought they knew they would fail. I still think nonistop would rock.
