We all know there are a gazillion programs out there that can aid in the creation of a DWI file. Seeing that I'm not the only pair of eyes around, I'm trying to find all the tools such as BPM checkers, DWI checkers, step creation programs, whatever...

Xstep & Xstep converter http://www.thomasscott.net/xstep/ E19.gif
Everybody knows it and everybody has mixed feelings about it. I like it because I'm lazy, but I don't like it because you can only do so much on it. Good for beginners, but don't get too atatched to it because the better step programers know what they mean when they don't use it.
Stepmania www.stepmania.com E1.gif
The infamous SM... It's the closest you're gonna' get to the up-close-and-personal step creation process. While it is user friendly in a sense, it is infamous for the PHANTOM FREEZE, which is a huge no-no in ANY stepfile. Some people gripe about the format SM puts the code in (the 8 down.gif method), but I personally don't give a hoot, just as long as the stepfile is good on the outside. I prefer to use it to determine BPM changes, because I have a hard time registering where exactly to speed or not to speed, but I rarely attempt to create steps with it. Of course, I'm different, so use it if you want to.
KraMixer http://www.sofotex.com/KraMixer-DJ-Software-download_L7317.html E1.gif
This program does a great job of tracking BPMs. However, for maxes, it finds them as 150s because it registers the beats at 1/16ths instead of the 1/8th that they usually are, but an overall killer package... It usually hits it on about +/- 2 BPM, but gives a good idea where it runs around. Also, for DDR 2song crossmixers, this is a nice program, which mimics plenty of the cool effects such as wind down, squelch, etc...
ACID MUSIC to PRO www.acidplanet.com $ shocked.gif $
One of the better automatic BPM finders are ACID Pro and ACID Music's beatmapper tool. However, these cost some hefty credits and are a waste to get just for the beatmapper. (If you aspire to mix and make music, get one of them, they're worth it.)
WINBPM http://www.greg311.com/dj-rodent/bpm.htm couple.gif
You've probably seen it mentioned other places, but WINBPM is probably one of the more accurate manual BPM counters out there. It tracks BPM, yes, but also shows your delay from your last hit, giving you a bit of insight to your tapping.
DANCING MONKEYS http://www.monket.net/wiki/dancing-monkeys nerd.gif
Dancing Monkeys is a player created program that automatically tracks BPM, finds gap, and throws steps in there for you. Sound too good to be true? Slightly. It runs on DOS and requires some tweakage to get it working. It is slow, but in comparison to how long it really takes to make a stepfile, it's relatively short. DM has a hard time working on 1/16th steps and sometimes makes mistakes. It also cuts songs to 1:45 if they're too long, so no long versions for you! If you're expecting a fancy stepfile, you have to remember that your brain is a superior computer. However, I concede that DM is one of the best gap finders on the planet, so I use it specifically for that.
ATOMIXMP3 Winamp BPM pluggin love.gif http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=47128
Automatic BPM finder smack dab in your winamp player. Neato! I have to admit, this one is pretty accurate of what I've seen. It even got Savior right! (ACID, DM and even my DJ program missed it.) I really recomend this one. All you have to do is install, load winamp, CTRL+K, go to dsp and double click it, then restart winamp. WHAM! The only flaw is the program's instability. However, it usually works on a normal basis, just don't have your computer do too much when running it, lest you want it to CRASH! (Don't make me sing it.)

Kamek did write the DWI tester, but he no longer hosts it, so I need to find it so I can review it again, and possibly use it. (I'll ask if I can host it later.) Happy stepfile making!

I use XStep for all my Simfile needs and it works fine as long as you have WinAmp and songs that no one has made good steps for E4.gif

Okay, huge update. I've been searching around for the tools and sadly a lot of the websites that I used to rely on either have hotlink issues or just quit period. So the DWI tester programs are very rare as of now, I'll search through my old cds to see if I have them...

This is just an offset of the DWI creation help thread I have up there already. As for the DWI tester, I have it, I just have to get to it later.

Check the thread in this forum about Dancing Monkeys. It's actually a really good program, automatically finds the gap and bpm for any given mp3 (there are a few exceptions), and even generates a dwi file for the song.

Also, I believe Kamek wrote a frontend program for DWI's test mode. I'm sure it's still lying around somewhere, but if you can't find it, I still have it.
