I couldn't have said it better onetwolittleb!!!!!!! I have all the same responsibilities as you do and DDR is just one more thing that I as an adult can CHOOSE to do because I've earned that right!!!!!!

My 19-year-old stepson and his friend were here today and wanted to see me do DDR. I have only tried one song so far a few times and I told them if they laughed THEY were the next ones on the mat! Needless to say they didn't laugh and were quite impressed at this "old" lady! They said I did much better than they ever had when they had tried it! They even encouraged me to try a harder song while they were here and were very impressed since I had never done it before! I think they were glad they DIDN'T laugh and have to try it!

I am going to have fun losing weight this way and I will probably stick with this better than any diet or exercising I have ever tried before!

I suppose some "kids" think it's crazy that my 44-yr-old husband plays Halo, too. But after working 12 hours a day, it is his right to CHOOSE to do whatever the heck he pleases and that is what he chooses!

I think that is perfectly fine. And to me there is no limit to age at all. You're never too old to play DDR, or whatever you choose to play. My dad is 50, and he is the one who introduced me to Unreal Tounament. He still plays it almost everyday. I think that's fine. It is completely his choice, and he most definately deserves it, considering how much he works.

For the record, I believe all but one of the DDR Freak staff members are over 18, with the majority being over 21. I would venture to say that we have at least a good 7 or 8 that are over 25.

I turn 27 in less than a month. My boyfriend, Islander (who is also on staff), turns 29 in March. We take extreme pride in our large collection of game systems, both new and old, and swear that we're going to be the type of parents who play video games with our kids someday. E1.gif

When I was young, my mother used to play Nintendo with my sister and I. I never found it odd that my mom was playing Paperboy with my sister and I on any random Saturday, though I did tease her because of how she played. She always had a tendency to move her arms like she was trying to avoid things on the screen. *giggle*

I kind of agree with your statement, but, have the old people who play DDR ask themselves, am I too old for this? or, have I had enough? I mean, don't adults have better things to do then play an arcade game? I'm not bashing on "old" people for people for playing DDR, but, I just wondering if they truly like playing DDR.

Yeah, okay, don't kids have better things to do than play an arcade game? Like read, or learn a language, or dissect frogs or something? As a kid, I played video games. As a teenager, I played video games. As an adult, I play video games. This is a form of entertainment I have enjoyed for a long time, so I think it appropriate that I continue to do so.

Now, as to whether or not I truly like playing DDR, the answer is yes. In fact, I wish I had more time for it. Right now, I'm getting in only a half hour a day, and I have to do that at 7AM before I go to work for the day.

Have I ever DDR'd at an arcade on the real deal? No, the closest machine to me is two hours away. But that doesn't mean I don't truly like the game. I've been trying as many different mixes as I can get my hands on, I actually laughed while doing Supercalifrgalistic in Dancing Stage Disney Rave for the first time just because I loved the tempo ramp-up, and I'm trying to figure out a way I can DDR at work while I'm running my servers (hoping to build a mini-foot pad that I can slide under the desk and hook up via USB, then just run StepMania in windowed mode).

So yeah, I truly like DDR. I'm coming to the game a little late, but I'm coming to it with a lot of enthusiasm and a pre-existing love of rhythm games. It also helps that I've been into electronic and dance music since the late 80's, and DDR tickles that interest quite nicely.

If we didn't truly like playing DDR, why would we do it?

I'm 25 and never realized I was in an older demographic for DDR players until I came online... most everyone I've met locally that plays the game is 21+ . Not that it's a good or bad thing either way it's just... an observation E10.gif I've made a lot of really good friends both of my own age and other ages playing bemani.

You're not alone, dude! I'm 30 years old. I say "old" because sometimes I need those breaks between songs just to catch my breath! If that's not enough, I'll go to options mode just for another 30 seconds. Heh. I can pass most 9-footers (on Max2, my local machine) on singles and doubles, even a few with A's. I have yet to pass a 10-footer. My first probably will be good ol' Max 300... I'm going to try for it next year.

I love you cause you're older than me (one of teh small number of ppl that are)

That is true.

I believe you are NEVER too old to play games, especially, this game. It's actually better for older people to play this because they don't get much exercise compared to youngsters. I just turned 25 and I'm starting to play the 10 footers now. I can do majority of the 9 footers. I'm not all that great but I never feel too old to play.

Another idea to think about:

I'm one of those (most Asians have this trait) that look 8 years younger than I really am. I get carded for everything. I know I know, it sucks, but it's cool at the same time. I bet there is a lot of you that know what I'm talking about.

Purchased pads and convertor for Christmas - total songs now sits at 505 and will stay there for awhile laugh.gif ............anyways............

Myself 36
My Wife 40
My Daughter 14
My Son 12

We have played every day since we first hooked it up. On Christmas day we had 15 people (old and young) all in one room, with two on the pads and several people standing behind them acting out the steps. We have actually gotten grandmom (63) on the pads several times.

Your as young as you feel and after a couple of four footers my age should be 90 laugh.gif

no offense, but it does sometimes seem strange watching older people play DDR. but i guess i'll be one of the few granparents that can play Maniac songs by the time i'm 60... i started a few months ago (during summer), just turned 15 and i guess you can say i'm a n00b but i'm doing pretty good. i can do 7 and 8 footers... barely passing 8 footers though.

i guess theres no age that u should stop playing... games are for everyone after all (except epileptics and people with terrible backs) so that's alright with me, to see a dad playin DDR. i wish my family played ddr, but instead my parents dont really care if i do and my bro makes fun of me. disgust.gif but i just tell him to do Luv to Me AMD standard - or better yet, AM 3P maniac.

kudos to you elder ddr players!

Heh, actually... I'm epileptic and until recently had a bad (though not terrible) back. Extremely photosensitive epileptics might be affected by games, but it's not as widespread as those warnings in the inserts would have you believe. And my back has gotten significantly better since playing DDR. A combination of the impact stress and my daily stretching for DDR workouts have really improved what used to be an easily tweaked lower back.

I don't often post, but "are you too old?" is too weird a question. I am 32, and I have not been playing very long. I can only do about 5-foot songs. But that has more to do with my gross motor processing time then my age. I can play for hours, as long as I don't get dehydrated. Do not confuse the effects of a sedentary lifestyle with the effects of age.

When osteoporosis and life insurance become issues and you find yourself tapping your walker to LoM, that's when I believe you're finally too old.

Then you promptly go home and play it on a controller.

Great thread!

I've been playing for a year and a half and turn 27 tomorrow.

Like many of you I have always enjoyed playing video games, have always been an athlete (I teach Phys Ed for a living), and four and a half years ago I got into swing dancing. DDR was the perfect marriage for me of several things I LOVE doing. Do my students know I play DDR? No, they don't need to and I have a right to a private life.

You are never too old to do anything you want. I find it funny that many of the younger people on this board find people in their mid-twenties "old". Well see how old you think it is when YOU are in your mid-twenties;). The truth is that I am not in good shape for my age...I am in good shape because I make a concious choice to take care of myself...and DDR helps me do that. I am actually faster now then I was in high school (I can run the 40 in 4.7 seconds:)

And conurepete...well said about sedentary lifestyle vs age. It's a choice.

Use it or lose it.

A small thought on this.

I am not bothered by the younger players looking at the more chronologically-gifted as elder players. I only despise the attitude that some of them think that the "elder" players are incapable of any real sort of accomplishments on the game. There is still the occasional Junior High kid that stops by muthos that has his "posse" with him cheering him on because he can pass some random standard song, and then get watch his world get turned upside down because someone in his late 30s that plays after him gets AAAs on 8 and 9 foot songs (I would be referring to Akudaikan in this case). Some of them seem rather angry at this...for reasons I do not know.

Anyways, this was just a thought on the topic.

*raises hand*

I'm 16, but I've seen people who around 25 play. It never really struck me as odd, since I've always looked at DDR as a game almost anyone can try and enjoy.

Even chronologically-gifted people. E15.gif
