Alright, my college (UMBC) has finally passed for the DDR Club. Now, since we're a new club, they only gave us a thousand bucks. Now, what would you gus recommend doing with it? We had an idea of constructing our own arcade machine, just use the metal pad threads to get instructions, build a cabinet, and then put a computer into it with TV out that runs Stepmania. But, that might not work out too well. What do you people recommend?

wow a thousand? very nice.

My suggestion is, yes, build your own metal pads. Since you have 1000 to burn, I suggest gathering some construction savvy people and building the best possible and the highest quality using the best materials. Get a decent TV not too big but not too small. The TV size doesn't matter as long as you can read the arrows... what matters is... SOUND SYSTEM! Big speakers, big bass! put these next to the TV on top of a cabinet. Have the computer and wires go inside the cabinet to make it look clean. Have some hi powered fans pointed towards the players, and maybe a fridge with gatorades and waters. Then you'd be set!

Boy, I sure wish I had $1k to spend!

I suggest you set up a DDR tournament. Or make a fund-raiser to make more money enough for you guys to go to Japan and see the birth place of DDR (Komani, if people don't know E15.gif ).

But think outside the box E1.gif . Just buying DDR merchandise won't allow the club to flourish. It'll just bring more DDR freeloaders devil.gif .

Fundraise like your life depended on it.

Get a machine, and get permission to put it in a room somewhere. (Preferrably, the arcade.)

Make membership cards, and have a set of keys for the game room attendant, and the president.

Make it so anyone not a member plays 50 cents for three songs, any unpaying members play for 25 cents a song, and paying members play for free...

Wait, this is getting too complicated... nvm, go with everyone else's ideas. Too much of a chance that people could steal money from the machine, and you couldn't exactly do much about a mix of non-members and paying members playing at the same time.

Wait, another idea. See if you can petition for your arcade to bring in an extreme machine. That normally works (Worked for VT, and I didn't even have to petition, I just asked for one to go in there, and poof.) (I'm not at VT, by the way.). See if you can work out a deal with the arcade, where every other Tuesday night, only members can play on the machine, and it's set to Free Play or something.

I dunno, I haven't started my club yet, and they wouldn't even give us money if they did. (At least not the first year.) Do whatever the majority says. riiight.gif

Forget Stepmania.

You have a thousand dollars. That is enough to easily get a JPS2, MAX, MAX2, Extreme and Party Collection, and still have enough money left over for a Cobalt Flux pad. Fundraise a bit and you have money for the doubles kit. Now THAT is a setup any DDR club would want.

We would love to have an actual game machine in the club, and we can actually just ask for more money (another five hundred bucks) and then there are enough people that LOVE DDR up here that we could get a fundraiser going and that would bring in a ton of cash.
We're trying to get an actual game machine so that way we could use the money the machines make and put it to the club, then we could go to Japan and see the birth place of DDR. Maybe even special shoes. Cause hey, everyone likes shoes. Cheese too.

Instead of an expensive-or-tiny TV, get a new projector. It'll be easier to move the whole thing (you know you'll have to), and it can be scaled to an easily readable size.
Other than that, I really don't have much of an opinion here, just that the very idea of a DDR club (other than this board) puts a special feeling in the cochles of our hearts.

projector, at least a stereo sound system, jps2, max2 or extreme, and a pair of fluxes or 4 ignition 2.0's with the cover, so more than 2 ppl can play i guess.

the projector is gonna cost over $1000, btw, unless it's really cheap.

I agree with your idea, dont go wasting money for a home made system when you can save up to buy a real machine, that will eventually make its money back... It may take a bit longer, but its better than home made and it will get you your money back as well.

heres the cheapest way to start one:
1. Get 2 fluxes
2. Get a coupla ps2 to USB controller converters
3. Hook em up & play stepmania E1.gif
also charge 50 cents for 3 songs, or you can do a "Phone Card" idea (ex. get 20 songs for 5-10 bux, or whatever you want), or you can do both

Good... that's like taking my post and sorting out all the stupid crap... good job.

I agree with everything... especially the game machine... but not the cheese... I had a friend eat half a can of easy-squeeze, then try to play some songs... we couldn't go near the pad without lysol after that.
