I just got done modding my Official Konami Pad that comes with the Ultramix Bundle. Here is what I did:
1. Went to Menards, got some wood- doesn't matter what kind as long as it is sturdy.
2. Got some packaging tape.
3. Went to Lowes and found this stuff in the flooring section called Carpet Guard (my solution to the mysterious hardwood floor covering product). It comes in a roll, it's fairly large, clear, and is around $12. It's pretty much just a roll of sticky film used for painting and keeping your carpet clean, etc. Anyway- the stuff is awesome.
4. Cut your board so it is 39x34.5 in.(this leaves an inch of space from all sides of the pad. Measure your pad out and add an inch just to be sure.)
5. Put your pad on so that there is an inch of space from all sides of the pad. Using the packaging tape, tape the top of the pad down. Then cut 4 12.5x9.5 (again, measure the dimensions of your arrows just to be sure.) Tape them down one at a time. Just try to guestimate where you should put them. Put it down first, then put the pad over it and try to center it with the arrow. Then tape it down.
6. When that's done, tape down the other sides of your pad- make sure it is flat and that there is no bunching when you tape it down. Also it helps to double layer the tape, just to make sure you keep it down.
7. Take your Carpet Guard and lay it over one part of the pad. You will have to overlap 2 pieces, so just put the edge of one piece along the bottom, and one across the top. IMPORTANT- Make sure you get all of the bubbles out. Trust me- it's really fukking(yes i know i spelled it wrong) annoying when you step on the pad and you hear popping noises. It took me a good 5-10 minutes to pop them all. The bubbles should only appear where you overlapped- unless you are really good at laying stuff out.
8. After you smooth out your Carpet Guard- YOU'RE DONE! It doesn't matter if it's perfect, just try and get most of the bubbles out. Now that your pad is protected, you can play in shoes so you won't notice, at least I don't.
So now your pad can be played on with shoes, and you won't loose yourself(hey- that's an Eminem song) on the pad because your arrows are raised up and the feel a lot softer with the cardboard under them. I think this mod is awesome, I took pitterpandas idea and altered it a little and now I'm happy. It's really soft if you play in your socks. Sorry, I don't have a digital camera so I can't show you any pics. If you encounter any problems, I will be happy to help. And oh yeah- I'm not responsible if you screw up your pad. Have fun! _________________

I can't take any pics, I don't have a digital camera. Basically all you need to do is have a board to put your pad on, some cardboard to put under your arrows, and some packaging tape to tape it all down with- that's if you want to play in your socks. If you want to play in shoes, get the Carpet Guard and lay it over the pad- it sticks to the pad. I put my pad on my board so that if you measured from the edge of the pad to the edge of the board there is a 1 inch space between them. Look at PitterPandas guide and that should probably help you to understand my directions, or just clear up anything you are confused about. This is a rough perception of how you layer it:
Layer 4
()\_\_________ <-- Carpet Guard- it rolls out and sticks to your pad- because it comes in a roll.
Layer 3
______________ <-- Your Pad
Layer 2
___ ___ ___ ___ <-- 4 pieces of cardboard to go under your arrows(but in the arrow formation)
Layer 1
--------------------
-------------------- <-- wooden board
Like I said, very rough perception. But if you know how to use your brain, I think you'll be able to figure it out. By the way- this a sideview. _________________

hi all. newbie here needing some help. read through pages and pages and pages.
i've come to making 1 of 2 decisions.
1) buy a BuyNShop Ultra DX-Xtreme pad
http://www.buynshop.com/productinfophp3/VG-DDR-ULTDX
2) buy el cheapo pads at fry's or off ebay. then do chubby pad mod.
http://ucsub.colorado.edu/~geddes/chubbypad/index.html
which do you think is better choice?
i'm leaning towards choice 2.
also with BNS pad, when they eventually break down, do you have to buy new ones, or are parts of old one somehow salvagable and can be combined with a cheap soft pad.
and does BNS require any modding to play on hardwood floor? (not require, but would modding help? if so, what kind of mod?) |

i used the basic design for option #2, and highly reccomend it, but with the addition of carpet padding. i put carpet padding between plywood and the ddr pad and it is soft as a dream, so if youre wanting to play barefoot that is a great option. _________________

Hi everyone I recently find a much better soft pad in this sit www.ddrgame.com. It's the PS/PS2 Super High Density Foam Pad W/ Carring Bag. It's just look like any other foam pad, but the density of the foam much better than any other foam pad I owned. It also comes with a carrying case, so sometime I will bring the pad to my friends house. It is the best foam pad I have every owned. |

Here's a pic of my soft pad. I built a wooden platform out of shelving and duct-taped the pad down, and sandwiched the arrows between cardboard slats. Super-responsive, more so than the metal pad I own even.

I think it's an ok pad, i've had mine since max2 usa came out
and still no problems, what i did to mod mine, was ducktaped
it to a board, then ducktaped a clear shower curtian liner over
the whole thing, has been great so far |
